My husbands great grandfather was a John Starkey, a shoe maker, born in Germany c. 1855. He came to England as a child (London we think), he then settled in Worcester and married Sohpia Brown in 1877. On his marriage certificate his father was entered as John Starkey a shoe maker.
On the 1891 census it states that John (c. 1855) was born Hannover, Germany (British subject).
Is there anybody that could look this up for me please.
Thanks, epc

Hello Kevin
Your Violetta was the sister of my husbands grandfather, Frederick Starkey. Their father was John Starkey who was born in Germany about 1854. John married Sophia Brown 1.4.1877at Worcester and they had 5 sons and 3 daughters.
Do you know any more about John Starkey?

Hello Kevin,
My grandfather was William Starkey, bro to Violetta, Frederick etc. I think we are all stuck with John. I went to Kew Archives and asked for help but they said that we may never get any further without going to Hanover. I did look at the 1911 Cencus which was the first one to be completed by the head of household themselves. John had signed the form and he had put his nationality down as German.
They said at Kew that it was very rare for other nationals to actually become British.
Have you any idea when John came to UK. I cannot find him on any cencus before 1881

I don't suppose it'll help, but my g-g-grandmother was born about 1857 in Hannover - a British Subject according to the censuses. There must be some records, probably in Germany. Maybe the only solution is to go there. I'll keep watching this thread - JIC!

:)
Pauley, you are probably right. Someone needs to go to Germany.
Your g-g-g-grandmother may have been a british subject but I think that John Starkey never became a british citizen.
The researcher at Kew Archives said that people could put what they wanted on a cencus because no-one would ever check and that it was very rare for anyone to actually change their nationality.
Sadly I fee that there are some members of our family who could tell us about
John but they will take the secret to the grave, I feel.

Hi Kevin. Hope you are well. We have health problems at the moment so are not doing a lot.
My nephew has done some searching and has come up with information which he believes is the real thing BUT I am waiting to hear from him as to whether or not he has any documentation to prove what he has. I am not very hopeful! No one in the family has managed to get any further and I think it's getting a bit late for some of us. It's hopefully something that you younger members will solve.

My Dad and I Went to a astwood cemetery, last February. My Dad's Cousin Brian Poole, past away in a nursing home in Worcester. And a elderly stranger came up to me . And he said do you know your family . The "STARKEY" Were German !!. I said No. And he told me the Starkey name was spell Star"kie . I did asked him ,Where he lived. So that I could ask me question . But I forgot his Name. He lives some where in Comer road Worcester .and I think his surname begin with M, in his eighty I am still looking!! ..I let you know when I find him !!
I would be grateful for you and your nephew's answer.

Kevin I would be very interested to know who this guy is.
I don't think there is any doubt that we are German. My nephew has come up with a German name and has followed it back but unless he can prove that this man came here and we can positively identify him, then I am not adding him to my tree.
Remind me of your email address and I will try and send you the info from my nephew.

I don't know if your John Starkey had a middle name Jacob. If so this entry from familysearch may be worth further investigation
Johann Jacob Sterken
Germany Births and Baptisms, 1558-1898
birth: 11 October 1854 BEDBURDYCK, RHEINLAND, PRUSSIA
father: Anton Victor Sterken
mother: Anna Maria Coenen
Although it says birth was in BEDBURDYCK, RHEINLAND, PRUSSIA it should not immediately be discounted as the Kingdom of Hannover and certainly covered large parts of the Rhineland before it was taken over by Prussia in 1866

A lot of the German records on Familysearch are unindexed, so you could trawl though some of the Saxony records (although I think you need Lower Saxony, so I don't know whethere there are (m)any of those:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/location/1927074?region=Germany
This lists a lot of information on Lower Saxony records:

Hi Kevin. John Starkey was my Gt G'father. He was born in Prussia as said, you have the right German family. On the history side of things, Willy Yarnold who married one of the Starkey girls (can't remember which one) did an in-depth search into the Sterken family and I was told that he went to Germany and visited the family years ago.
