Hi all,
I'm looking for any information on a James Peggie, born c1821 in Fife. He had a daughter named Mary born c1839 in wemyss. Any info will be greatly appreciated. also if anyone knows the origin and meaning of the surname or the variants of it. Thanks all.

Hi stetj, :)

Mary was born 2nd Oct 1839 in Wemyss, daughter of James Peggie and Jean Russel. Other children to the couple were Margaret 1841, Jane 1844, Thomas 1850, Alexander 1846 and another Alexander 1852.

James and Jean married 26th July 1839 also in Wemyss.

This looks like them in 1841:

Address: High Street, Wemyss, Fife
James Peggie, m, 20, engineman, b. Fife
Jean Russel, f, 20, -, b. Fife
Mary Peggie, f, 1, -, b. Fife

Have you tried searching for James and Jean's death certificates? They may be able to give you their parents' names.

A quick check of SP shows Jean to have died 1857 in Wemyss, aged 38. The index gives her mother's name as Henderson.

Can't see anything easily for James, b. 1820 -/+ 5 years. He may have died before 1855.

How do i search for scottish deaths before 1855? Can it be done on scotlandspeople? I apologise if this sounds like a dumb question but i am new to genealogy. Thanks

Pre-1855 death (or really, burial) records are not yet available on SP but have been said to be added either by the end of 2008 or early 2009. Probably the latter at this stage. ;) Your best bet would be to try seeking Wemyss' MI (monumental inscriptions or gravestone) records and see if your Peggie family is listed on them.

Have you seen this thread: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html It's very useful for listing what is available with Scottish research and, unfortunately, what is not.
