Hi Kerry,
Can you check out the name Toler. My GGGG Grandfather Richard Kemp stole a sheep in 1802 in Kent with a Samuel Toler his brother-in-law. Richard was transported to Tasmania for life for the crime. Just want to see if anymore Tolers got into trouble with the law. Samuel only got six months jail and a fine for this crime.

Hi johngirl
Sorry no Tolers. Must have started to behave themselves. ::)
Kerry
-
Thankyou Kerry.
My GGGG Grandfather also learnt behave himself. He was one of the first people to arrive in the Colony of Van Diemans Land in 1804.

Any Winchesters? Or Duly's? Or Tutt's? Or Robins'?
(But especially Winchesters. I have a feeling about that line!!) ;D ;D
Glen
-
Well you were right Glen ;D ;D
Nothing for all surnames except Winchester ::)
Michael Winchester, Sussex
1813, April session
Larceny, sentence - No Bill??
PRO ref HO27/9
Kerry
-
Hmm, well I don't have any Michael's in my tree yet, but he might pop up somewhere!
Did you find your highwayman you were looking for in 1806?
Glen
-
Well I found Richard Message twice, once in 1806 for felony and then once in 1807 for Larceny and transported. So the rumour about him being a highwayman was obviously slightly an exageration. ::) ::)
All the records I am now collecting for Richard Message just need to be sorted and linked together and that is proving to be the frustrating bit.
Michael Winchester! I think he might be in my Winchesters :o

is there somewhere esle near here
was there a
Lewes Correctional Facility or something like that ?
-
Do you know I hadn't even given it a thought! ::)
Would there have been local prisons before that period? I know Horsham had a prison at some time which is certainly not there now.
Kerry
-
This is very kind of you, Kerry.
Any Edmonds or Edmunds?
(I know one of my Edmonds's sadly commited suicide in Lewes Prison at a later date, awaiting trial for larceny, but I dont know about if any of them further back had issues with the law)
-
Hi Liz
Just making sure I get lots of use out of it. Not sure I should be spending too much money on family history at the moment so justification in order! ::)
Just two in Kent
Mary Edmonds
1816 July session
Larceny, sentence - 3 months
HO27/12
William Edmunds
1816 April session
Larceny, sentence - No Bill
HO27/12

Petmas
Was there a jail at Horsham because I have noticed somewhere assizes held at Horsham for West Sussex?
Kerry
-
Yes http://www.hiddenhorsham.co.uk/54/horshamgaols.htm , it was the last place in England to carry out execution by press where the victim was crushed by putting a board on them and piling with rocks. Good wholesome family entertainment
-
:( Sounds like it!!!
