Title: William Rees Evans/ Hannah Jones
Post by: HH on Thursday 03 February 05 20:32 GMT (UK)
My g.grandfather, William Rees Evans b. abt.1840, lived in a house called Tynewydd at Llandilo, where he had land. His wife was Hannah, b. abt.1839, and they had a connection with the Tabernacle Independent Chapel, where they and several of their children are buried. Do you know when he was married or baptised, who his parents were, or Hannah's maiden name ? She died 29.10.1937, he on 3.3.1919.
It is probable that Hannah's maiden name was Jones and I probably have the marriage in 1864, a year from which not so many records have been recorded. HH

Hi HH,

you will be able to find out the names of his parents from his birth certificate, also from the later (definitely 51, maybe 61) census.

As you know that their children are buried in Llandilo, have you checked the dated of their births? By ordering one of their birth certificates, you may be lucky and find Hannahs maiden name included. That is the case on one of my BCs from Aberystwyth in 1848.

You don't say where you have already looked, but I would suggest trying the FreeBMD site for his birth and marriage certs. Once you have these, you can check the parish registers.

Good luck,

D

D -
Thank you for your advice. I've done a lot of digging around, but having such a, dare I say it?, common Welsh name, it has been very difficult to pin MY William Rees Evans down. I have some names and dates (of children) from a great- cousin, still living in the area, at Ammanford, but some of them don't seem to tie up with dates discovered from e.g. Ancestry.com.
Two William Rees Evans were married at Llandilofawr in the Apr-Jun 1864...
Anyway, I'll keep at it - half the fun is in the chase, isn't it?

I now have my grandmother's birth certificate, showing her mother's maiden name as Hannah Jones, but with names like that (William Rees Evans and Hannah Jones), how am I going to find the right birth certificates? Any advice gratefully received!!

An up-date:
The marriage certificate shows that William Rees Evans of Tynewydd, Llandilofawr, age 24 married Hannah Jones of Abernant, Llandilofawr, age 21 on 7.6.1864 at the Register Office, Llandilo. William, his father, Evan(deceased) and Hannah's father, William were all carpenters. The witnesses were David Jones and Edwin Griffiths.

OK, so now it shouldn't be too difficult to get hold of William Rees' and Hannah's birth certs, as they were both born after 1837.

You have his fathers name and his address, and have her fathers name and occupation and her home parish.

I would write to the superintendant registrar with this information (or phone them first). They should be able to find the correct certificates. If there is any doubt, they will contact you before issuing the certificate.

I always order through the local registrars, as they have more local knowledge, and in general, are extremely helpful.

Thank you for the advice. I will get on to it soon and post what I find, as it could help someone else. No-one has come forward with shared ancestry yet despite there being large families involved.
Could I request translations of some of the Welsh place/house names anywhere specific on the site?

There is the Welsh section, but that is just for postings in Welsh.

Just post your query, and we'll do what we can.

It turns out that "Hannah" was Anna and William Rees Evans was just plain William Evans but somewhere along the way he decided to add in his mother's maiden name- perhaps when she died?
I have both their birth certificates and you were right, D ap D, the Superintendent Registrar at Carmarthen was incredibly helpful! Thanks for the advice.

Glad to hear that you have made progress. Thanks for the feedback.

You should now be able to find them on the earlier census', hence their parents and siblings.

How are you getting on with the translations?

Not much progress with these two. They haven't come to light in the 1871, by which time they were married with several children. I only have them from 1881-1901.
I have Hannah only in 1851 before this- no sign of William. I'll try a census look-up request; someone may strike lucky.
Thanks for your interest.

Hi there

I am trying to help my mother-in-law find her gg and grand parents.

I have William Evans who was a smallholder in the Llandeilo area (GG parent) and his son as Ebenezer Evans born 1876, who married Mary Anne Hughes.  I have the address as Ally-y-grug Road in Ystalyfera.

I looked at the census and this is what I found so far:

Hello Cee,
The bad news is these aren't the same family! It's so difficult to trace people with these typical Welsh names, isn't it? My "lot" were farmers in the Llandilofawr area and many are buried at the chapel there. One of these days, I'll get there to see the monuments for myself.
Good luck with your research,
HH
