Title: Unable to find service records
Post by: VAD54 on Wednesday 12 November 08 16:12 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find out anything about my husband's Grandfather, Gilbert Rolfe Dawes who was born in Shouldham, Norfolk in 1883.  I have the attached photo; he is in the middle of the front row.

He was living in Hampshire for 1901 census, but returned to Norfolk in 1916 when he married Margaret Holdgate.  He survived the war and died in Kent in 1926.

Any help in tracing him and his war record would be appreciated.

Thanks

V

was he a commisioned officer?

"About British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920
This database contains the surviving service records of non-commissioned officers and other ranks who served in WWI and did not re-enlist in the Army prior to World War II. With the latest release, this database now contains records for surnames beginning A-N. The type of information contained in these records includes: name of solider, age, birthplace, occupation, marital status, and regiment number."

The chap seated middle front row is an Officer, doubtless someone will be able to ID his regiment from the badges etc - Maybe you should submit a blown up image of his cap badge  ?)

I would say they are Royal Artillery - photo is late or post war.
