Help!!
Withdrawal symptoms are setting in! (Symptoms being excessive use of exclamation marks, etc!!!)
Ancestry has just bitten the big one. I can't access it on the .co.uk, .com, or even .com.au versions of the site. Even Library Edition (I'm not saying how I know!) doesn't work! I've tried on Firefox and IE, in Windows XP and Windows ME. I'm all out of ideas.
Oh no. My fingers are itching to type, but nothings there.
Anyone else having trouble accessing it?
Glen
-
They are offering some free access for November and have probably become overloaded.
-
It's been having problems all week specially with the BMD Index and it has been very slow.
mab
-
Yep, I've got problems too tonight, although it was fine this afternoon. Really annoying!
-
I'm in, but it was really slow - just like on here when there are thousands of us using the site at one time.
-
Ancestry has been a creaking gate for some time now. Can't get in at all at the moment
-
It's not letting me into the censuses but is fine on BMDs.
How odd. ???
-
What's happening for me is that after a long time the census page loaded, I can click through to the transcription page, but when I click on the 'view original image' icon I get an error message saying 'error processing request'. Very annoying indeed.

I have had problems with the BMD's and I sent an email to Ancestry......their reply
We are aware of this problem and are working to correct it. The problem with the search happens intermittently so if you continue to click on the 'Search' button, you may get a list of results. I apologise for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
It did work for me kinda.

I have the same prob !!! tryed all night
Mrs Griff
-
Me, too :(
-
Is it just me ??? Is RC slow as well ???
This is painful :P
mab
-
No, it isn't just you - I was thinking that, too, as I was posting my last message.
Paulene :)
-
it aint working :(
-
Guess I'll go make supper and come back later :-\
mab
-
Rootschat has been slow for weeks now - there was another topic about the problems a week or two back.
That's why there are so many duplicated replies - it's taking sooooooo long from when you press the post button for RC to actually accept and display it
-
Hi mab,
Rootschat has speeded up a bit now.
Paulene :)
-
Hi all,
I've noticed my virus-checker database updating several times today which usually indicates something nasty lurking on the web.
Could be either the nasty itself or all the updates slowing down the net generally rather than just the genealogy sites.
I've noticed it slow today going in and out of email as well.
Good time to say goodnight, I think.
;) [just noticed --- why don't we have a yawn smiley?]
-
i cant even access ancestry, im just getting the check back soon message, well annoyed, need access to my tree on there for a family member.
means i will have to have an early night damn.... ::)

Ancestry has this free 14 day offer at the moment - bad timing with the glut of TV programmes for the 90th anniversary of the Armistice.
Possibly their servers have collapsed under the weight of people looking for ancestors who fought/died in the First World War.
-
Waldojeffers?
You wouldn't happen to be a Velvet Underground fan by any chance?
-
Ancestry's census department is working normally for me but it's not letting me access my tree - tells me to come back later. No chance - I'm off to bed :(
Maggie
-
It is working for me OK now with getting census information ;D
ambers
-
Thanks for letting us know, Ambers :)

-
I thought it was just me! I couldn't get any BMD's earlier in the week and the whole site was a complete pain. I needed a thermos and a cut lunch just to get through a couple of census entries.
-
It seems a bit faster now.... :D I can actually get to the part where you can view an image ;D
mab
-
There is no way to access Ancetry.co.uk or Ancestry. com this morning..they say they will be back soon but that was yestrday evening and it is still the same
-
No problem here ..... 8)
-
Its all working fine for me as well ;D ;D
Sue

Me to. Normal speed as well.
Jen
-
Most of it seems okay, but BMD search keeps coming up as "Your search for Person returned no matches" whatever name I use!
It did that yesterday, and was a complete pain
Ho-hum
Glen
-
It happened to me yesterday but if I tried "browsing" rather than "searching", it was fine. Very odd. ???
-
Can get in and access to census but it wont let me into My Ancestry or add to the shoebox

I have been having exactly the same problem.....been driving me potty! Also having problems loading up images - census fine, but some of their other images - that has been going on for weeks. Reported the images as missing, but no response (or images!)
Noticed that the WDYTYA family tree software comes with either a free 1 or 3 month trial (depending on which version you buy), so no doubt there will be many more users just after Christmas! :P

Am also having trouble getting onto Ancestry UK, get the little boy picture and come back soon message. However, have no problem getting in through FTM 2006??!!!!
-
Good for you, Modem. I still cannot get access at all. WE will have to ask for a refund...some hope ???
-
I am getting all the mentioned symptoms,it's getting a pain in the you know what,Trouble is my renewel comes up on Dec 2, and after this week and in view of them giving away free bee's,i am seriously thinking of cancelling,

-
I wonder why it doesnt impact everybody ? Theres loads of Lookups being posted .....
-
I can only get into the Christenings 1530-1906 and marriages 1538-1940 which I have saved as direct links
When I try to access Ancestry itself, I get

I wonder are they being found via FindMyPast

possibly - but I'm happily searching Ancestry census as we speak - and earlier BMDs - even looked at that one in the New Forest :P
-
Most of it is working for me, but BMDs are odd - sometimes it works and sometimes I get 'no matches for this person', despite me knowing they are normally there ???

Does anybody have the 0800 number for Ancestry? I think I will give them a call

Hi Christine
Thank you anyway. I'm still having problems but have found a VERY circuitous route into the censuses.
I have just tried to find a 1926 marriage for SMITH on the full GRO index and been told there are no entries - yeah!!
-
Yes I'm having the same problem with Jones :(
mab
-
I have the same problem with the BMD full indexes but can get into it by first selecting a year then the qtr, then the first letter of surname.
It's a bit time consuming as you have to guess approx which page no the name will be on.
I've just received a reply from the technical support exactly the same as the one mentioned earlier.

THis is the fourth day I have not been able to access Ancestry.co.uk or Ancestry.com. Are any of you experiencing this for so long a period. Whatever is wrong must be serious if they cannot get back to normal
-
Hi
I can get in - but not by my usual method (ie) www.ancestry.co.uk. I rang them today and according to a very charming American gentleman - he thought everything was back to normal!!
When I told him that the full GRO index was returning Nil results on BMD's for Smith and Jones - he checked and was astounded as it did the same on him!!
Heres how I get in - hope it works. It's a nuisance though
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/locality/dbpage.aspx?tp=3257&p=3251
Under - England Historical Records click on "view all 11 England Census & Voter Lists" to get the 1841 census up
Under - England Birth, Marriage & Deaths - click on "view all 68 England Birth, Marriage & Deaths" to access the full GRO index
-
Bingo, Carole. I was wanting to add to my Family Tree and was able to get onto it using the site you gave. That is a relief . A big thank you and I hope that Ancestry gets itself sorted out
Best regards
Norah
-
It's doing strange things :P I wanted to attach a census record to my tree and pressed back to record at the top of the page to do so and the record there was completely different and for another family than the census I was looking at. So I went back did the steps again from scratch found the family looked at the census backed out and it did it again ??? :o :o :o
mab
-
It makes one wonder if Ancestry know what is happening at all
-
Well if the guy on the help desk wasn't aware of the BMD problem but the person who sent me the email was that tells you that they have communication/training issues in their call centres.
I used to work in a call centre. When Carole called the rep should have checked first to see if there were any other tickets regarding the same issue. I'm sure there must be ::)
mab
-
The most serious thing is that neither of the Ancestry web site are able to be accessed. They put the notice on the internet so why have they not with withdrawn it if they think the sites are available again. It seems a long time for them to be out of action
-
Interesting the BMD's are working for me now....do you think it could be the volume of traffic ???
mab
-
It is difficult to say when the whole site seems to be topsy turvy :o
-
Try now...I can get in.
mab
-
If I try www.ancestry.co.uk - I get the "Check Back Soon" message so I can still only access via the route above
When I rang Ancestry - I was told that they were constantly adding new servers and that last month - they celebrated their 1 millionth subscriber
-
I have had no problems getting on to the site on www.ancestry.co.uk on my favourites but using the BMD's has been another matter.
Just tried it a couple of seconds ago and all seems to be working and it is fast.
Fingers crossed
When did you last try, Carole?
Tricia
-
Hi Tricia
All morning and just before typing this reply. After their problems on Wednesday - I have been unable to access the home page via www.ancestry.co.uk.
Working on my "fix" if I click "Home" I get the same message

It doesn't make sense.
I have just linked on the Ancestry link on your reply above and it went straight to my personal page without any problem. It is working ok on both the browsers I use
Tricia ???
-
Hi all,
I e-mailed them on Wednesday complaining about the problems and the "free trials" clogging the system up.
I suggested that we subscribers should have some "freebies" too.
They replied quickly saying that they would pass on my suggestions to their
"site developers and marketing team"
We shall see .......

Hi Tricia
It doesn't seem to matter what I try - I just cannot access the home page from the website address
I've tried logging out and then back in again but still get exactly the same problem. However - this is something new:
Logout from my "temporary" access method
I then get the "Check Back Soon" page so close it down
Try www.ancestry.co.uk which again produces the "Check Back Soon" page
So - Access via my temporary method and get the login screen but I then click on the yellow "login" button instead of signing straight in
That gets another login screen with a choice of switching to standard login which I select and login
What do I get - the little boy and the Check Back Soon message!!
BUT - I can still access via my other method and it shows me as logged in
If I use my temp access and log straight in, I'm back to square one
-
Ancestry has added some pilot sites, one of which is a toolbar. It is a disaster, once you download it your computer goes crazy. keeps shutting down . I think it has affected all of ancestry. Lots of complaints on line.
-
I have tried the "fix" they recommend in their FAQ but it doesn't work so I have just sent them an email
As I have accessed via the website for the past 4 years, and have only had this problem since Wednesday when Ancestry went down - it must be Ancestry
I have not downloaded their new toolbar
-
I am still not able to acces Ancestry in the UK or.com and this must be the fourth day..just the little boy and check back soon . I am using Carole's info to access
There is no point Ancestry celebrating when their customers cannot use the correct websites. I wonder if it is happenign to certain parts of the UK. It is very strange that some can get into the site properly
-
Not wishing to rub salt in anybody's wounds but I have just accessed Ancestry using Carole's link in her post and it took me straight to my home page. I can access my tree, the census and BMD records. The only thing I would comment upon is that the page loading was sluggish.
Maggie
-
Maybe it has something to do with which internet provider you use.
I know quite a few months ago there were difficulties with some servers not working correctly with Ancestry and not others.
Still ok for me on AOL and Firefox browser
Tricia ???
-
Hi Tricia
I am also with AOL but use Internet Explorer
I have only had this problem since Ancestry went down on Wednesday so feel it's an Ancestry issue rather than an ISP one.
-
I am on AOL and Iitmust be an Ancestry issue. I sent an E mail to complain but had it returned . Have any of you the one I should have used because I think the more complaints they get there is JUST a chance they may make an effort to return the service to normal
-
I just logged in Ok?
If they were having problems, either they have them sorted now or it is/was only affecting 'some' Users (maybe ISP related)?
-
I have been using Ancestry solidly for days now and no problems at all,in fact i have only just finished for the night.
Recently I have had to wait longer on here for pages to come up ,than for Ancestry.
Spring
-
I still cannot access Ancestry so maybe it is ISP related ..will need to ask AOL BUT why is the little boy still on the site. Should it have been removed if there is no problem now
-
Just thought that my last wasn't very constructive, so perhaps it my "housekeeping" routine might help.
Each week I use "CCleaner" which clears out all the registry rubbish. At the same time it means that you have to log in again to all of your Bookmarked/Aol "Favourite" sites.
I was a bit dubious about trying CCleaner ,but took advice from a chap who came to do some computer work for OH.
He downloaded it and showed me how simple it is to use .
That said it might be worth just logging out and then going to Ancestry via the URL rather than your Bookmark/ Fav
Just a thought !!
Spring
-
I do use the Ancestry URL but it still is not working so I have to go to that which is book marked.
THink I had better go to bed before it drives me round the bend
-
I don't have Ancestry bookmarked as I have had problems with that before in the past ...I google...Ancestry.uk...and today I have had no problems at all using the BMD index except it was painfully slow :-X
mab
-
Ancestry have been having problems, not the least with accessing BMD records. I've emailed their support team twice and each time got the standard reply - we know there are problems and we're doing all we can to sort them out.
I don't have problems this morning accessing the site either from Favourites or typing in the URL, but I would suggest that everyone clears their temporary internet file cache, including any cookies, stored logons and browsing history. Also, if your PC has been running for a long time without a re-boot, clear the DNS cache too, so if they've changed their server adresses these get refreshed.
David
-
I've just been using Ancestry with no problems at all, except I do not like the new version at all. If it aint broke don't fix it.
-
I don't like the new search version either and don't use it.
I have told them what I think of it ;D
Much good that will do.
Tricia
-
I followed the advice given by Mezentia and it has half worked.
I no longer get the "Check Back Soon" page when I use www.ancestry.co.uk
However - only half the home page loads. It gets as far as
"Go directly to UK Birth, Marriage and Death records" and that's it
No census options displayed below but everything else is there.
-
YIPPEE
I did another clearance and then re-booted and everything is now back to normal.
Tricia - I agree with you. The new search facility is cumbersome
-
It seems like things are getting back to normal, I had no problems at all last night running separate simultaneous explorer sessions on births, marriages deaths and census. Let's hope that normal service has been resumed.
I too shun the new search facilities, and have told Ancestry what I think of them ;D However, I wonder if they will get the message :(
I also tried Google's Chrome. Whilst It's very quick, I could only get one browser window to run at any one time. Trying to get a second browser window running evoked a reply from Ancestry that I was logged on in too many times. Bye Bye Chrome.
David
-
I still cannot get anything except the little boy no matter what I try to get the normal service. I have to use the method Carole suggested initially.
-
On ancestry.ca you have the option of using the "new" search or clicking a box to go back to the "old" search style. Is that not available on .co.uk?
Karen
-
I am mystified. What new Ancestry?
Mine looks exactly as it always has done and apart from a glitch or two last week, it is behaving as normal. I have only the UK version but have been searching censuses today and have also checked that BMD searches are working. No problem at the moment.
-
Yes, Karen, ancestry.co.uk does have that option! Personally I dislike the new search facility - it's pants ::) !!! So I always select return to the old display.
For some reason, apart from about 30 minutes two days ago, I've had absolutely no problems with Ancestry; it's been painful reading this thread and other similar ones, I feel so sorry for those who have struggled.
Hope everyone's up and running now. Happy hunting :)
Kind regards
Gaie
-
I am happy to report that after 6 days I am now able to connect to Ancestry in the normal way
I do not like to new method they introduced, either
-
I hope everyone is up and running now ;D I am finally able to do research and to have multiple windows open without it saying that someone else was using my account etc. Will I get my week back ??? Not >:(
Ancestry has a huge hold on the market and I still need to have a world membership because my folks roamed a bit. However my customer satisfaction level is nil to none at the moment. I will have to really reconsider my renewal next year. And, I totally hate the new method of research they seem to want us to use...if it ain't broke don't fix it :-\
mab...a very disgruntled customer.
-
Hi Mab
You don't have to use their new search facility - I also find it unhelpful
There is a bit on the screen that says something like - "return to previous seach facility" or "use old search method" I can't remember the exact wording
-
Yes I know Carole...I always revert back to the old method.
mab ;D
-
It always goes straight to the old search for me and offers me the new one in a tiny link in the top left hand corner.
