Title: Ancestry has bitten the dust!!!
Post by: kizmiaz on Wednesday 12 November 08 22:44 GMT (UK)
Help!!

Withdrawal symptoms are setting in! (Symptoms being excessive use of exclamation marks, etc!!!)

Ancestry has just bitten the big one. I can't access it on the .co.uk, .com, or even .com.au versions of the site. Even Library Edition (I'm not saying how I know!) doesn't work! I've tried on Firefox and IE, in Windows XP and Windows ME. I'm all out of ideas.

Oh no. My fingers are itching to type, but nothings there.

Anyone else having trouble accessing it?

Glen

They are offering some free access for November and have probably become overloaded.

It's not letting me into the censuses but is fine on BMDs.
How odd. ???

What's happening for me is that after a long time the census page loaded, I can click through to the transcription page, but when I click on the 'view original image' icon I get an error message saying 'error processing request'. Very annoying indeed.

Jen

I have had problems with the BMD's and I sent an email to Ancestry......their reply

We are aware of this problem and are working to correct it. The problem with the search happens intermittently so if you continue to click on the 'Search' button, you may get a list of results. I apologise for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

It did work for me kinda.

Hi all,

I've noticed my virus-checker database updating several times today which usually indicates something nasty lurking on the web.

Could be either the nasty itself or all the updates slowing down the net generally rather than just the genealogy sites.

I've noticed it slow today going in and out of email as well.

Good time to say goodnight, I think.

Ancestry has this free 14 day offer at the moment - bad timing with the glut of TV programmes for the 90th anniversary of the Armistice.

Possibly their servers have collapsed under the weight of people looking for ancestors who fought/died in the First World War.

I have been having exactly the same problem.....been driving me potty! Also having problems loading up images - census fine, but some of their other images - that has been going on for weeks. Reported the images as missing, but no response (or images!)

Noticed that the WDYTYA family tree software comes with either a free 1 or 3 month trial (depending on which version you buy), so no doubt there will be many more users just after Christmas!  :P

I have the same problem with the BMD full indexes but can get into it by first selecting a year then the qtr, then the first letter of surname.

It's a bit time consuming as you have to guess approx which page no the name will be on.

I've just received a reply from the technical support exactly the same as the one mentioned earlier.

Hi

I can get in - but not by my usual method (ie) www.ancestry.co.uk.  I rang them today and according to a very charming American gentleman - he thought everything was back to normal!!

When I told him that the full GRO index was returning Nil results on BMD's for Smith and Jones - he checked and was astounded as it did the same on him!!

Heres how I get in - hope it works.  It's a nuisance though

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/locality/dbpage.aspx?tp=3257&p=3251

Under - England Historical Records click on "view all 11 England Census & Voter Lists" to get the 1841 census up

Under - England Birth, Marriage & Deaths - click on "view all 68 England Birth, Marriage & Deaths" to access the full GRO index

Well if the guy on the help desk wasn't aware of the BMD problem but the person who sent me the email was that tells you that they have communication/training issues in their call centres.

I used to work in a call centre. When Carole called the rep should have checked first to see if there were any other tickets regarding the same issue. I'm sure there must be  ::)

Hi Tricia

It doesn't seem to matter what I try - I just cannot access the home page from the website address

I've tried logging out and then back in again but still get exactly the same problem.  However - this is something new:

Logout from my "temporary" access method

I then get the "Check Back Soon" page so close it down

Try www.ancestry.co.uk which again produces the "Check Back Soon" page

So - Access via my temporary method and get the login screen but I then click on the yellow "login" button instead of signing straight in

That gets another login screen with a choice of switching to standard login which I select and login

What do I get - the little boy and the Check Back Soon message!!

BUT - I can still access via my other method and it shows me as logged in

If I use my temp access and log straight in, I'm back to square one

Ancestry has added some pilot sites, one of which is a toolbar.  It is a disaster, once you download it your computer goes crazy.  keeps shutting down .  I think it has affected all of ancestry. Lots of complaints on line.

I have tried the "fix" they recommend in their FAQ but it doesn't work so I have just sent them an email

As I have accessed via the website for the past 4 years, and have only had this problem since Wednesday when Ancestry went down - it must be Ancestry

I have not downloaded their new toolbar

There is no point Ancestry celebrating when their customers cannot use the correct websites.  I wonder if it is happenign to certain parts of the UK.  It is very strange that some can get into the site properly

Not wishing to rub salt in anybody's wounds but I have just accessed Ancestry using Carole's link in her post and it took me straight to my home page.  I can access my tree, the census and BMD records.  The only thing I would comment upon is that the page loading was sluggish.

Maybe it has something to do with which internet provider you use.

I know quite a few months ago there were difficulties with some servers not working correctly with Ancestry and not others.

Still ok for me on AOL and Firefox browser

Hi Tricia

I am also with AOL but use Internet Explorer

I have only had this problem since Ancestry went down on Wednesday so feel it's an Ancestry issue rather than an ISP one.

If they were having problems, either they have them sorted now or it is/was only affecting 'some' Users (maybe ISP related)?

Just thought that my last wasn't very constructive, so  perhaps it my "housekeeping" routine might help.

Each week I use "CCleaner" which clears out all the registry rubbish. At the same time it means that you have to log in again to all of your Bookmarked/Aol "Favourite" sites.

I was a bit dubious about trying CCleaner ,but took advice from a  chap who came to do some computer work for OH.

He downloaded it and showed me how simple it is to use .

That said it might be worth just logging out and then going to Ancestry via the URL rather than your Bookmark/ Fav

Just a thought !!

Ancestry have been having problems, not the least with accessing BMD records. I've emailed their support team twice and each time got the standard reply - we know there are problems and we're doing all we can to sort them out.

I don't have problems this morning accessing the site either from Favourites or typing in the URL, but I would suggest that everyone clears their temporary internet file cache, including any cookies, stored logons and browsing history. Also, if your PC has been running for a long time without a re-boot, clear the DNS cache too, so if they've changed their server adresses these get refreshed.

I followed the advice given by Mezentia and it has half worked.

I no longer get the "Check Back Soon" page when I use www.ancestry.co.uk

However - only half the home page loads.  It gets as far as
"Go directly to UK Birth, Marriage and Death records" and that's it

No census options displayed below but everything else is there.

YIPPEE

I did another clearance and then re-booted and everything is now back to normal.

Tricia - I agree with you.  The new search facility is cumbersome
Title: Re: Ancestry has bitten the dust!!!
Post by: mezentia on Tuesday 18 November 08 07:05 GMT (UK)
It seems like things are getting back to normal, I had no problems at all last night running separate simultaneous explorer sessions on births, marriages deaths and census. Let's hope that normal service has been resumed.

I too shun the new search facilities, and have told Ancestry what I think of them ;D However, I wonder if they will get the message  :(

I also tried Google's Chrome. Whilst It's very quick, I could only get one browser window to run at any one time. Trying to get a second browser window running evoked a reply from Ancestry that I was logged on in too many times.  Bye Bye Chrome.

I still cannot get anything except the little boy no matter what I try to get the normal service.  I have to use the method Carole suggested initially.

On ancestry.ca you have the option of using the "new" search or clicking a box to go back to the "old" search style.  Is that not available on .co.uk?

I am mystified. What new Ancestry?

Mine looks exactly as it always has done and apart from a glitch or two last week, it is behaving as normal. I have only the UK version but have been searching censuses today and have also checked that BMD searches are working. No problem at the moment.

Yes, Karen, ancestry.co.uk does have that option!  Personally I dislike the new search facility - it's pants  ::) !!!  So I always select return to the old display.

For some reason, apart from about 30 minutes two days ago, I've had absolutely no problems with Ancestry; it's been painful reading this thread and other similar ones, I feel so sorry for those who have struggled.

Hope everyone's up and running now. Happy hunting  :)

Kind regards
Gaie

I am happy to report that after 6 days I am now able to connect to Ancestry in the normal way

I do not like to new method they introduced, either

I hope everyone is up and running now ;D I am finally able to do research and to have multiple windows open without it saying that someone else was using my account etc. Will I get my week back ??? Not  >:(

Ancestry has a huge hold on the market and I still need to have a world membership because my folks roamed a bit. However my customer satisfaction level is nil to none at the moment. I will have to really reconsider my renewal next year.  And, I totally hate the new method of research they seem to want us to use...if it ain't broke don't fix it  :-\

mab...a very disgruntled customer.

Hi Mab

You don't have to use their new search facility - I also find it unhelpful

There is a bit on the screen that says something like - "return to previous seach facility" or "use old search method"  I can't remember the exact wording

It always goes straight to the old search for me and offers me the new one in a tiny link in the top left hand corner.
