Title: Dymocks buildings and the Beehive Brae
Post by: mcghee67 on Friday 14 November 08 07:31 GMT (UK)
Hi anybody got any stories/pictures of the Beehive Brae and Dymocks buildings,
I am doing my family history and as most of my family came over from Donegal and stayed there and also their offspring I would like to add some imformation about it.  My dad said it was like the United Nations Irish, German Polish etc, Amongst my family names that stayed there are Molloys, Monaghans, Andersons, Hunter.  So I would like to hear from anyone that remembers

Thanks Jane

Don't know about dymock buildings but the beehive brae is on the main route from motherwell upto craigneuk.   Cowie square was on one side of the brae.  This was miners row again made up of various nationalities but from what I can gather lots of polish people.

Hi Mags,

Hope you are well today anyway I am sure that Dymocks building was in Craigneuk St and it was at least a 2 storey building as my dad says his gran Biddy Molloy used to stay down the stairs from her daughter across the road next to the new entrance for the ravenscraig land he had an allotment where he used to grow veg during the war.  He also used to keep greyhounds and one of his dogs was called Dasher Bob that held the race track record at Carfin here is a picture of my grandfather and friends at racecourse day out I am sure there will be some Craigneuk men in it....... See if anybody can recognise anyone.

Hi Jane ,
i am Robert Sloan i was born in motherwell maternity hospital in 1952. we lived in the beehive brae
untill 1962 at the very top landing of the brae on the left hand side heading towards Wishaw.
ok what do i remember? The outside toilet with no light in the middle of freezing winters, the two
wash-houses for the women and the four rows of coalhouses. Most of all, although we were
poor they were the happiest most carefree days of my life.
The only two people i remember on the brae were two wee lassies one was called Janice Murry
and she lived halfway down the brae on the same side as me  the other one was a girl called
Ann McGuik  i have probably spelt her surname wrong. she lived on the top flat above me
i attach a photo of my mother Martha Sloan who sadly passed away in 1956. The reason i
am sending  this is because i think that it may be close to the two bridges at the bottom of
the beehive brae.

Bob, what a very good-looking girl your mum was (perhaps still is!)

I recognise the background, it's "the big wall" at the Caly yard in Brandon Street Motherwell, there was always a street photographer outside Brandon parish church, next to Mills' music shop.
You can just make out the wall on the left of this 1903 postcard - the steeple of the now demolished Brandon church on the right.

Hi , haven't checked out this iste for a while, but I had forgotten about the ~Buzzuki picture house.  My mum's family lived in cowie square from about 1914 to about 1930 (i think) their name ws Preston.  Old Joe was the head of the family and my Grans' family were called Cunningham.  There used to be a pub near the picture house too I think.  My mum's family worked in the nearby pit but don't know which one.

Hello Lud,
Yes I did have a brother in fact I recall we were called the terrible twins.
I apologise if my memories of the beehive brae are a little hazy but you
Have to appreciate I was only ten when I left.
OK on the other side of the brae was a shop that used to sell sweeties, if my daddy had a few pennies to spare me and my brother would get as much as we could get.
On the same side of the brae, if I remember, was an old slagheap that we often went sliding down on corrugated iron sheets.
My daddy ought to have been the original snake oil doctor because his cure all for every single illness known to man was the dreaded cod liver oil.
He used to chase me and my brother round the room and eventually catch us but if I can quote a lovely old American blues singer called Ruth Brown who said "We's old but we ain't cold", so maybe that cod liver oil didn't do us too bad in the end.
Anyway getting back to the beehive area, my brother and I went to the primary catholic school, roughly halfway between Graigneuk and Wishaw right next to the Catholic Church in the late 50's.
Speaking about Motherwell, my father used to take us down to the Motherwell swimming pool but not for a swim, for a bath because we didn't have a bath in the beehive brae.
The photograph in the middle of me and my twin brother is taken in the Glasgow road in Burbank in 1952, outside my aunt Jeanie's house. The other 2 photos of my father which I'm not too sure when they were taken but I think they where towards then end of the war. My father died in 8th May 1963, and is buried along with his wife in the large cemetery behind traction house.
My twin brother and I moved to the north of England in 1963, where my brother still resides.
I moved to Reading, a town 40 miles west of London, in 1985. I will retire in 2017 and I intend to return to the north of England. It's not because I don't love my country. It's just that all ties have now been severed but I will never forget Scotland and I will never forget the beehive brae.

Hi Bob

The cemetery is called Airbles and there has been a lot of redevelopment at the traction house with most of it demolished. Even Motherwell baths didn't escape the bulldozer and there is a Heritage Centre now built on the site

Hello All, no I can't recall Patrick McLaughlan , but my pal at that time was John McLaughlan, his brothers were Danny, and Hugh , one of the wee shops across the road from Dymocks Building was run by Mr and Mrs Clow , just up the road ,on the brae was the Beehive Bar.

I was pleased to read the messages regarding the beehive Brae, I was brought up in the building opposite and many of the names are familiar to me. Yes, the picture house was the Buzzuki, the pub the Beehive, the shop was Matt and Jean Clow and I remember buying penny sweets on my way to the public school opposite.
Our name was Nicholson and we lived directly above the sweet shop, we all had gardens at the rear of our building and our house and the one next door were the only ones on our side of the street with a bathroom.
My wife and I returned to live further up in Myrtle Drive a couple of years ago and it was hard to see all the changes that had been made.
We went along to Bellhaven Church on Craigneuk Street and meet up with my friends from childhood on the Beehive Brae and for us to recognise each other.
I will contact my sister Eileen and see if she has any pictures of those early days.

This is for McGee67. My Uncle has just turned 80. He grew up in Craigneuk, Wingate St was his last place of residence. He was a McLaughlan, which is on my Mothers side. He reminises the Bazooke cinema (The Rio). I was wondering if there was any possibility of getting a clearer copy of the photo you posted. I cant quite make out what the sign says on the building to the left, which I think the the Bazookie. By the way, he tells me that there were a lot of Lithuanians settling in the area, working in the pits. They were regarded as from Russia and hence the name Bazookie. Like the russian musical intrument. Only a story, no hard facts. Richard.

Any idea what church that is in the background, just so I can get a bearing? Tks in advance.
PS, attached is a photo of the Rio Picture House (The Bazookie) from another site. Cinema at left hand side. Anyone know the building on the Right Hand Side? This is Craigneuk St, I believe looking towards Motherwell. Any info would be helpful.

An Aerial photo of Craigneuk St, (Wishaw out of picture on the left). In the distance, at the bend, there is the Zookie (Bazookie) (Rio) Cinema. You have to zoom in to see it properly.
Road going across screen at very bottom possibly Flaxmill Avenue. Road on right hand side Meadowhead road. Picture taken circa 1945. Note prefabs on Meadowhead road. Road in centre of picture Charles Street??? Enjoy.
Could that be St Patricks Church in Shieldmuir rd about centre left?

You can see a tower in the picture, which is from Craigneuk Public School, which is still there to this day. (You can walk it at street level on Google maps).

This is an excellent picture Dick, the big works with the 2 long chimneys is the Etna, St Patrick's parochial hall is at the side of Overjohnstone Drive and the church itself is across the main street (Shieldmuir St) with John St on the left.
You're right about flaxmill Ave and that must be Glencleland road above it.
At the very top of the picture is the woods of Dalzell Estate and in front of them are the old houses at Burngrange - glassford St, Burnside St, Shields Road (the Wishaw Back Road as it was known) and Range Rd, Reid St & Stirling St.

Many thanks for posting this, wish I could get a copy, I meet with some "old" Craigneuk cronies on a Wednesday morning, they would love it as the came from Charles St and the United Buildings.

Didn’t know there was a beehive pub. I see in was mentioned in an earlier post, I Will need to ask an old pal. He got into the Bazookie with a jam jar and also got and wait for it “a slice of turnip” lol  if there was a pub I suspect it must have been up beside the picture house possibly across the road. If I find out I will post it.

It was on the right-hand side going up the brae, before Dymocks, opposite Craigneuk Public School. It was owned by the Givens family, Trixie Givens the lawyer was the daughter (she's about 86 now) they opened the Bullfrog on Shields Rd after the Beehive was demolished.

Not seen a photo of the Beehive Bar but from feedback it was the other side of the road from the public school. Run be Jane Givens and her daughter Trixie. Trixie was a lawyer and by all accounts a nippy sweety, right bundle of laughs. Didn’t suffer fools gladly. I would like to see a photo of that pub. If I come across one I will post it on here.

Hi my grandparents lived in the block opposite the school, and as a pupil there is the 1950's I woiuld stand at the gate and wave to them at playtime.  I remember the sweet shop down the brae, we used to buy penny caramels, or a poke of sherbert with a stick of liquorice!  As the jars of sherbert were used, Mrs Clow would mix them together, and sell it as rainbow sherbert.  I lived on Craigneuk Street above the Co-op shop, and my best friend was Helen Ewing who lived on Beehive Brae.  Remember using the Shields Road café as our place to meet up with friends, and also walk to Fir Park on a Saturday to watch Motherwell play.  We weren't allowed to go the picture house as it didn't have a good reputation, not sure why.  I attended Belhaven Church until I moved away in 1967.  Many hapoy memories of childhood good to see all the old photographs.

My father Duncan McArthur was born in Craigneuk in 1939 and stayed in Meadowhead Road, he recently asked me to find some auld photos of the area and these pictures on this forum are great!
He talks about picking his dad's wages up at the Etna Steel works when he was about 7!
