Hi Binkie

It's very small - do you have a larger version?

The best I can make of it is Duglastoun  :-\

I agree Gadget but also looks like "Bridge" comes after that.

Hi Dave

It's written twice - once describing the residence of the parents, where it is not further described and then after the first witness which had Bridge end after it (end on next line).

Much clearer now.  Yes, see it now Gadget.  I'd go with Juglestown after comparing the "J" in the other names.

Never heard of it though and I can find nothing on Google.

Methinks a bit more local knowledge required.

The problem is that some of these old 'ferm touns' have disppeared totally - often in what is sometimes referred to as the Lowland Clearances :(   I only found where my ancestors lived by going to one of the very early maps on : http://www.nls.uk/maps/index.html

Even then it took me ages to locate  :-\

Thanks Gadget & daval57.

My cousin Isles aka Bervonian has phoned me to suggest it might be Inglestoun which seems more likely but the proof of the pudding would be if anything could be found on an old map so I'll have to keep searching!!!

I've just looked at two of the early maps on the site link that I gave - 1741 Williaqm Edgar and the 1775 Mostyn Armstrong and I can';t find anything that fits  :(

Thanks once again, Gadget.
As you said in a previous posting, it's quite likely that the place might not even be on an old map but your continued efforts are much appreciated

I'd say Inglestoun. I live in the Parish of Newlands and have never heard of it.
I do have The History of Peeblesshire Vols 1,11,111 which I'll check out

Thanks Mrs A

I'm ashamed to admit it but I made a mistake when I said Newlands. On looking through my records Jean Murray was born in Dolphinton, Lanarkshire while the rest of her brothers & sisters were born in West Linton, Peebles.

I've had a look at various old maps but haven't been able to see an Inglestoun although Bridge End is clear as part of Dolphinton.

Any help would be much appreciated!

What about present day Ingliston

Isn't that part of Edinburgh & not at Bridge End in Dolphinton?

Could it possibly now be known as Inglestone?  Seems it's somewhere in the Borders area?  I googed Inglestoun and that was what came up asking if I meant that.

I've tried googling Inglestoun & Inglestone but can't find anything in the area of Bridge End in Dolphinton.  I've also tried to find any info on Wm Telfair (John Murray's employer) at Inglestoun but without success.  It may be that there isn't any entry on a map for this place.

Thanks - Binkie

i wonder if INGRASTON could be the place your looking for.  it is a farm situated between west linton and dolphington.

Thanks Margaret.  I noticed Ingraston & wondered if that was the place & maybe a corruption of the original name.

Hi Binkie
I think Margaret may be correct in suggesting Ingraston -  I looked up History of Peeblesshire (Volume 3) by James Buchan and saw that  INGOLNESTON was sold to James Lawson of Cairnsnuir in 1653, then was sold again in 1830 to John Allan Woddrop, and referred to as INGRASTON, previously known as Ingliston.
There is presently as Margaret said, a farm named Ingraston, owned now by the Gilchrist family.
I thimk it will be in West Linton parish

Hope this is helpful

I'm very grateful to both you & Margaret, Mrs A.

The matter is certainly resolved due to your detective work.

Many thanks - Agnes aka Binkie
