Post by: scotsbornaussie on Wednesday 19 November 08 06:22 GMT (UK)
Tracing My GG Grandfather Daniel Bain born 1852 and his wife was Jane ? born in 1855.  He had 3 daughters Jane, Bella and Jeannie.  They were all born in Nairn, Scotland, any help would be appreciated going back.  Thank you.

There was only one marriage in Nairn by a Donald Daniel Bain to a Jane.
It was on 5 Oct 1883.

Donald Main Bain to Jane Mackintosh.

The writing is a bit odd so give me 5 minutes to decipher it.  I should be able to give you both sets of parents.

Sorry I was so long, I got interrupted.
My first post was a typo, I meant Daniel.
I think you'll find it was worth the wait.
My source for this is ScotlandsPeople (SP) http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
It's a pay per view site but very reasonable.  Minimum purchase is 6GBP for 30 credits.
To search is free.
To view a list of results is 1 credit
To view a particular record is 5 credits (1GBP)

Marriage took place at 39 King Street, Nairn

Daniel Main Bain 28 fisherman of 20? Park Street Nairn  (both illiterate)
Jane Mackintosh 25 of 39 King Street Nairn     (    "              )

Daniel's father : Daniel Main Bain fisherman (decd)
Mother : Margaret m.s. Wallace

Jane's father : Alexander Mackintosh
mother : Isabella m.s. Hogg

On the same page there is another marriage.
It is the marriage of Daniels brother to Elizabeth Wallace

James Main Bain fisherman 30 of 20 Park Street Nairn (both illiterate)
Elizabeth Wallace 25 of 2 Park Street Nairn

Elizabeths father : William Main Wallace fisherman
mother Margaret m.s. McLeod

I don't like the name Main coming up all the time, it may be some other word but it has certainly been recorded as Main.

I'll drop you a PM so we can arrange for me to email the document to you.

Dave

Don't use SP for getting census records, too dear.

Thank you so much Dave you are a gem.  My family will appreciate it too.  We have lots of Mains and Bains in our family.  Sorting them out is the trick.  Thanks again

SBA & Dave,

The address 39 King Street Nairn got my attention. My gg-grandfather's brother Alexander McIntosh lived there from the mid-1860's until his death around the turn of the 20th century.

I have only accessed transcribed versions of the Census records (cheapskate) and had Jane McIntosh as Jean, an easily made error. I cannot find her on the 1871 Scottish Census.

Also (Dave) I am keen to know if the mother's maiden name is clearly Hogg on Jane/Jean's birth record? A fellow researcher and I have Alexander marrying Isabella Barron 10 March 1848 and her being the mother of Jane/Jean? Isabella died 21 November 1892 at 39 King Street, perhaps her death record confirms the maiden surname?

Sorry I don't have the original docs for these individuals, but it is not my direct line. SBA send me a PM and I can share what I have on the early McIntoshes.

Hi Andrew,

Jane and Jean are interchangeable names so not necessarily a mistranscription.
I had two living aunts, Jean (sadly passed now) both christened Jane.  Many others over the years are Jane / Jean depending on the record you look at.

As for maiden name, make your own mind up - looks like Hogg to me, a witness (brother Isaac?) has the same surname.  The other witness is Thomas Barron!  I'll leave you to figure that out.

In case anyone else picks up on this thread, after some research, it seems that Isabella's maiden name is not Hogg, but Barron.
We feel that Hogg is an error on the part of the registrar.
I wont go into detail as to why this conclusion has been reached - it would take too long.

Just to summarise what I think the line looks like...

Head
Alexander Barron m Isabella Storm

Children:
Isabella c1828 m Alexander Mackintosh
Alexander b1836
Jane b1841
Isaac b1843

Grandchildren
Jane c1854 m Daniel Bain c1854
James b1857 died 1863
Isabella 1859 died prior to 1867
Margaret 1862
James 1864
Isabella 1867
Anne 1871
............................................................
children of Margaret Barron (cousin/sister to Isabella?) and John Hogg
Isaac b1861  (witness to Jane's marriage)
Alexander b1863
............................................................
Haven't figured out who Thomas Barron, the other witness was.  However, there was a Thomas born 1861 to William Barron and Anne Davidson.
Assume William Barron is another brother or cousin to Isabella b1828.

Just to add a little more detail to David's below ....

Jane McIntosh's (Daniel Main Bain's wife) full list of siblings taken from the 1851-1881 Census records are as follows;

Alexander born 2 Sept 1848, married Ann Main 'Ellen' 12 Oct 1883, died 25 Jan 1908
William born 26 Sept 1851
Jane born circa 1856, married Daniel Main Bain 5 Oct 1883, died 8 Jan 1933
James born 20 Jan 1857, died 20 Sept 1863
Isabella born 24 Sept 1859
Margaret born 29 Jun 1862
James born 26 Sept 1864
Ann born 10 Aug 1871
John born circa 1875

I have found no record of a second Isabella (the first still living aged 11 in the 1871 Census).

Sorry about that.
I based Jane and Daniel's children on info from IGI and I think a couple of the records were 'submitted' as opposed to 'extracted'.  I didn't spend too much time checking that aspect.

The main point of contention was Isabella's maiden name.

Hi
I have dropped in on your posts about the children of Alexander McIntosh & Isabella Barron.
The IGI shows that there was a second Isabella born on 15 March 1867 but she is not with her parents in the 1871 or 1881 Censuses. The Isabella who was born on 24 September 1859 appears with her parents in the 1871 Census. This is very unusual as although families gave children the same name as a sibling, this was following the death of the earlier sibling.
This line of the McIntosh's had a "tee" name "Courtie" and the 1867 birth shows this.
James Mcintosh married Ann Main Wallace in 1894 and they had a child Anna Bella born in 1899 at 16 Park Street, Nairn.
Ann McIntosh had an illigitimate child Christopher James McRae who was born in 1901.

I am related to Isabella Barron as 2nd cousin, three times removed.
Best wishes.
