Title: Arklow Cemetery Records Help
Post by: Catherine on Friday 21 November 08 16:04 GMT (UK)
I have been trying to do my mums side of the family tree, for years and years without success. I have now come across some pieces of papers with info on, which has enabled me to obtain some certificates, which will give me pieces of jigsaw to do.
I have also got details of a couple of grave ref numbers, with some names, one for the old cemetery in Arklow, and one for the new one, and if I could possibly find out any dates of the people interred there it would enable me to get certificate of death, to help me on my way.
Does anyone know where the records for the cemeteries will be kept for Arklow, either giving me and address or e-mail address to contact please.
Thank you for taking the time to read my message.
Catherine

Hello eadaoin,

Thank you for replying to my listing, it is very much appreciated. I have found loads of info on the site you mention, it has in the past answered a lot of my questions and Peggy has been very helpful. But info I am looking for, is that I have found some scraps of paper with the following on....
These are the details......

Grave number B56      New Cemetery
Interred in the Grave
James Flood on 18/07/1958
Mary Flood on 22/01/1961

These are the details......
Grave number 73 EE South  3 West     Old Cemetery
Bought by Edward Kelly

Interred in the grave are
Nannie Kelly on 26/03/1927
Thomas Kelly on 21/12/1931
Mary Kelly on 17/03/1945

Now if I could find out where the records for the cemeteries are kept, hopefully they may be able to give me the dates of death, so then I could obtain death certificates to find ages of these people.

Thank you again for replying, it is very much appreciated any advice.

Catherine   :)

if someone was in the GRO in Dublin looking at these years, they might keep an eye out for your people in the indexes, and post their age at death here.

Maybe you could post a request .. maybe on the Ireland - General board?

I was in Arklow Library today, the lady at the Desk had no clue what i was talking about :). she told me to go the the parish office and they suggested that I contact the undertaker as both he and his father keep/kept records  ;D

To the OP, the New and Old cemetries are both in St Gabriels cemetery  - they are just divided by a wall.

I will hopefully be up that end of town during the next week or so - i have taken your ref Nos and will see if i can track down the gravestones.

I live just outside arklow so im not often up that end of town

i have been the place myself and gone through all the books listing graves and graveyards.. ask for janet  she gave them to me.. they are reference books and you can only read them there... honestly you can see the grave records for lots of graveyards including the ones you want to research...

You already have dates of deaths when you get the  headstone data that is the date of death
so what more do you need before getting a certificate?

As Cara says, you have dates of death already. The index to Irish civil registrations is now online and using the details you already have (names, dates, places) you should now search the index to find registration district, volume and page numbers to order the appropriate certificates.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347

Not sure how familiar you are with Irish certificates but there really isn't much detail on them: name, age, place of death, cause of death, occupation, marital status, name of informant. Birthdate and place, names of parents or spouse, place of burial are NOT on death certificates. Also remember that age on the death certificate may not be acurate- it depends on whether or not the informant gave the correct information.

Sorry to refute this but they do not list all the deaths or indeed all the headstones of Arklow

The cemetery book is housed in a private home in Arklow and can only be viewed by a visit by appointment to said home.

I suggest you look at the IGP Progect site for headstones for said area as well or contact Peggy Leonard she herself has transcribed ALL headstones for Emoclew which is the graveyard you are seeking Flood people just inside top gate RH side

Cheers
CL

Dear Colin
I just saw this post on rootschat and wondered if you could help me at all?
My gg grandmother died on 9th Jan 1915 in Arklow.  Her name was Ellen Elliott (nee Kenny) and was approx 80 years old and lived on Wexford Road.  Her husband (William Elliott) died 26 July 1871 at the age of 48, her son Robert Elliott died 6 Jan 1871 age 3 from scarletina, a month before her son William was born in Feb 1871.
William moved to Dublin in 1901 (he married Mary English from Arklow) but died in 1913.  So Ellen, his mother, outlived them all.
It looks like a neighbor registered Ellen's death (Mary Murphy) in March 1915.  Would you know if any of the family are buried either together or separately in Arklow Cemetery ?
Any info on the Elliotts would be greatly received.
Incidently, I also have a record of a Margaret Elliott born 28.04.1856 to William and Ellen but they didn't marry until November 1867.  I have no record of what happened to her, whether she lived/married/died young.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Dear Mr O'Reilly,

I saw your post about Arklow cemetery and as I’ve got ancestry from Arklow I wondered whether you might be able to provide me with some information.

My great-grandparents James O’Neill (10/11/1890-1978) and Anne/Annie Redmond (24/08/1890-1965) were born in Arklow and later emigrated to England. James’ parents were James O’Neill (born about 1850 in County Carlow, died 4 May 1941 in Arklow) and Kate Kehoe (born about 1848 in County Wexford, died in 1923 in Arklow). Anne’s parents, I believe, were Michael Redmond and Sarah O’Neill, presumably born in Arklow as well. I was wondering whether you would have any information on them or know whether those of them who died in Arklow are buried in Arklow cemetery and, if so, were I might want to search were I to visit in the future.

Thank you,
Felix Lee

Hi Colin,
I am looking for some information on a grave plot in St Gabriels cemetery.
I believe the plot holds the following people....
James Murray died in the 1950's? I would like his D.O.D
His wife ? I would like her name and D.O.D
The Ebbs children. Their names and D.O.D
Any other information on this plot would be most gratefully received.
Many thanks Collette

The Ebbs children. Their names and D.O.D

Henry 6 and Alice 3 according to the newspapers, death probably the 18th Jan but their death certs should be online to check.

Death certs say 19th
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1949/04552/4201329.pdf
which adds up as the newspaper of the 19th said they died this morning after the fire the night before, I just wasn't sure if they would have made that day's paper but clearly did.
