My 2xgt-grandfather, James THOMAS, s/o John THOMAS, married Frances AUSTIN, d/o Thomas AUSTIN, 6 June 1839, in the Independent Chapel, Welshpool.
At the time of the marriage, James was living at Union Square, Welchpool and Frances at Mount St, Welchpool. James, his father John and Frances were all weavers.
If anyone has access to the 1841-1861 censuses, I would be very grateful if you could find them for me. A tall order, I know!
Thanks in anticipation.

I have looked at the 1851 and 1861 Montgomeryshire census and cannot find your James Thomas & Frances Austin.
While I was searching I came across this in the 1851 - don't know if they are connected to Frances but thought I would post them anyway!
HO107/2498, folio 660, page 33
Living at Austin's Row, Welshpool
All born in Welshpool
AUSTIN, Thomas, head, w, age 74, proprietor of houses
AUSTIN, Thomas, son, u, age 28, nailer
AUSTIN, James, son u, age 26, nailer
AUSTIN, Susanna, daughter, u, age 29, dressmaker
Let me know if you would like to me look up anything else.

Thanks for your reply Jan. It's so strange - they MUST have been somewhere, not necessarily Montgomeryshire I guess .... One of the witnesses at James & Frances's marriage was Susan AUSTIN (her sister?) and I found this Susanna's bapt in my searches. I'll get my thinking cap on and might well get back to you! Thanks for your help.

Just when I felt like it must have been one of the unreadable's, I found Mr & Mrs James Thomas on page 112 out of 115 of the 1841 Census.
Address appears to be... Back Road, Welshpool.
James Thomas, 32, weaver, no (born of this county)
Frances Thomas, 28, weaver, yes
-
Following on from the 1841 Census, I found this on the Montgomeryshire 1851 Census...
THOMAS, James, ld, w, 42, flannel weaver, BRE Hay, Chelsea Lane, /f675/p14
The name, age & occupation correspond - so is it correct to assume James has in fact become a widow?
Does this ring any bells Jane?

I must have missed that one JSLewis!!!!!! ;D

JS Lewis - big thank you. Unfortunately, no bells since you know as much as I do!! However, I am sure your 1841 and 1851 findings are correct.
There are various deaths for Francis THOMAS. Can you tell me which rural district I should be looking at?
I will be able to pin down a year (ish) as they had two known sons - my grandfather, George, who I've successfully tracked - he moved to London. And James bapt Feb 1841 in Welshpool - never got anywhere with him either.
I'm a bit confused about the 1841 birth places. Am I to presume James was born in Montgomeryshire? And that Frances wasn't? If so, is it possible for you to tell me where she was born?
I can't find James in 1871 (I don't have access to 1861) and wonder if he popped his clogs too...
Thank you so much for your help. I'm really very grateful. Looking for Thomas in Wales is a bit like looking for McLean in Scotland - my other brick wall!

PS - should have said George was my GREAT grandfather......... I'm not that old!!

Hi Jane,
In response to the birthplaces of James and Frances, in the 1841 Census the question simply is ' were they born in the same county ?'
In Frances case the answer was yes, thus we know Frances was born in Montgomeryshire.
In James case the answer was no, he was not born in Montgomeryshire.
From the 1851 Census... repeated here again this time with his sons...
THOMAS, James, ld, w, 42, flannel weaver, BRE Hay, Chelsea Lane, /f675/p14
THOMAS, George, ld, , 8, scholar, MGY Welshpool, Chelsea Lane, /f675/p14
THOMAS, Henry, ld, , 6, scholar, MGY Welshpool, Chelsea Lane, /f675/p14
From the 1851 Census we can learn that the family were living at Chelsea Lane, Welshpool. The puzzle of James birthplace is solved with James actual birthplace now being noted on the census as 'Hay, Breconshire'.
I would assume Hay as being 'Hay-on-Wye'.
Plenty for you to get on with now Jane... ;)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! At least now I know George wasn't a figment of my imagination - and I think Henry was a witness at George's marriage. Onwards and upwards ... thanks to someone whose name I don't know.

Hi Jan ;)
I doubt you miss many Jan...
...No harm in some queries being double checked especially if it turns out some info has been overlooked, and some poor soul is not sent searching in a wrong direction! ;D
I do not have the 1861 Census for Montgomery, I have only viewed it on a trip to Llandrindod Wells when investigating my own roots. If you dont mind having a look I may have my own query or two for you to confirm in relation to some of my Lewis lot... ;D
