Title: completed - How to put completed on posting
Post by: deebee on Tuesday 02 December 08 09:39 GMT (UK)
I would appreciate it if someone could explain to me how to put completed on my postings.  I think I must be a bit dim because I can't seem to find any way to do it  ???  Thank you.

Hello dee

While not necessarily agreeing with the premise that this is necessary - my research on anything is never complete - go to the first entry of the thread, hit the modify button - on right - and when the modify screen appears, change the Subject item to include the word completed

I think the point Trish is that when a post asks for a specific look up and that look up has been successfully carried out it stops other people going into the thread to see if they can do the look up.

If it was done more frequently I would certainly look at outstanding requests with a number of posts more often, where as currently it is usually a waste of time.

I have been given such an answer many times David, so will say no more - other than I disagree with the concept.

Do come back dee if you have any problems  :) - I think I have it right, despite I use it rarely

If you're going to do this, I think the word completed should be added to the original thread title not replace the original.  I've noticed a few lately where the title has become simply the word 'completed,' which isn't very helpful.

I had thought I said that - albeit in a slightly different manner

change the Subject item to include  the word completed

Hi all,

I'm sorry.

I think I must be an idiot, try as I might I still can't do this.  I became an oap recently and I'm going to use this as my excuse, the brain's gone  :'(

Definitely not an idiot - no-one who has the good sense to trace their roots can be classified in this manner  :)

Blame the instructions  - I will attempt to do a screen print & add a picture. As I am almost an oap, I am not very good at this, so someone else may get there before me. Watch this space

1. Go to the thread you want to mark complete. You  have to be the person who started the thread ie made the very first post on page 1.

2. It will look like the first image. Because you wrote the first post, you will have the option to modify  which for the screen shot, is only next to my posts (I can't modify your posts)

3. Click on modify and you will get the next screen
Where it says   Subject  How to put completed on posting
insert the word COMPLETED in front of How  and the title will read
COMPLETED  How to put completed on posting

4. Then click save (under the text of the message) to save the change.

Trish

Edit

They are not very good images - i'll try again

Not disagreeing with you, Trish.  I just wanted to point out that some people seem to be taking this too far.  From my perspective, this 'completed' business is not a good idea for the reason you stated.  I've only marked a few very narrowly defined requests as completed.

No worries - it is providing me with practise in trying to write useful instructions & do decent print screens  ;D
I hope dee will forgive my tardiness

OK try these images with my last set of instructions!

The first image looks awful on my screen - does it make any sense to you Dee?

Hi Trish

you are not making any sense about completed posts.

Are you saying on "Subject" box - I am first person on the original thread (Ist thread) I typed for e.g. "Please help me find Alan Smith" - so if the topic is completed, I have to use modify button then go to "Subject" box and I got to change like this "Please help me find Alan Smith - completed" ????

Is that right Trish?
 ???

Yes, just like that Grubheam - modify the first post in a topic.
