Browsing the web today and found this information regarding the TOMLINSON family & their connection to the Bethel Church at South Normanton.
http://www.bethel-methodist-sn.co.uk/history.htm
I have Tomlinsons in my family tree from South Normanton. Can anyone add any further information about this family. The information I have gathered on this family summarised below. I believe they are connected an Charles would be my GGG grandfather.
Charles Tomlinson born 1822 Worksop (census) later residing South Normanton, Derbyshire
Possibly IGI birth 9/4/1822 Misson, Notts, Parents John Tomlinson & Elizabeth. Too many John Tomlinson & Elizabeth marriages too idenify mothers maiden name. Not found Charles on the 1841 &1851 census.
On the Census from 1861 onwards Charles is marrried to Matilda (unknown surname)born 1837 Blackwell, Derbshire. they have two children at this time Sarah Ann aged 2yr and John (1 month). There is a Elizabeth Tomlinson widow agd 83yr at 144 Ball Hill (2doors down) ? Parent or other relation to Charles. I can then trace the family until the 1891 census.
John Tomlinson can be traced up to 1901.
Sarah Ann Perkins nee Tomlinson Can be traced up to 1901. These are ancestors of my grandmother, Surnames in South Normanton of interest are Page, Perkins, Tomlinson & Draycott
Thank you for any help. Teresa

I think Charles Tomlinson was b.c. 1832 -not 1822
1861 census has his age transcibed as 39 -image shows he is 29
1871 and 1881 ages given also put his birth year as 1832
This is a possible marriage

Thank you Suzard for your hard work. John is a bit of a puzzle if he did marry three times.
I wonder if some of the marriages are other John Tomlinson's. John is a known Methodist preacher
as written on the 1861 census. Would remarriage be frowned upon within the Methodist community ?
I had noticed the mix up with Charles birthdates on the censuses and will have to look at the IGI again.
Looks like more certificates need to be orded too sort out this family.
Thanks for your help. Still interested if anyone has any information too add to any of the above.
Teresa

Re marriage would not be frowned upon by the methodists -quite the opposite.
If John was a widower he would be encouraged to marry - probably to a widow within the church.
It is the census records you need to check for consistency of age -do you have access to them??
Suz

I do subscribe to Ancestry so will be able to check out the census details of Johns wives etc.
I have also contacted the church for further information of its history.
Thanks again Teresa

you may get further (and maybe fuller) information from

Very helpful people - mine of information - I call in occasionally - think you have to contact them by post if you are unable to visit

Thank you again Suzard, They look like a good source of information. Do the accept postal enquiries ?
Meanwhile while looking on ancestry I noticed that Solome Tomlinson (named on the 1841 census you found) married into the Booth family this will connect into the 1861 census. John & Elizabeth Tomlinson have their grandaughter living with them named Elizabeth Booth. Charles Tomlinson is Sibling of Solome.
I also noted there are some family trees naming the above and I can also ontact these members.
Thank you again

Don't forget that Elizabeth Booth is the granddaughter of John and the 1st Elizabeth -Elizabeth on 1861 will be step grandmother!
I'll post a link for birchwood - they accept postal enquiries - lovely people there
If you need someone to visit for you - I will be going but not until poss end of january.

Update I have recieved new information regarding the history of the Bethel Chapel at South Normanton. Charles (1831-1905)and John Tomlinson (1861) were trustees in the chapel and involved in the planning and buying of the land where it is sited. There families were also involved in the Chapel's services and the running of the chapel.

Hi Teresa
Just come across your Tpmlinson enquiry - I have lots (I mean lots!) of information about the Tomlinson and Perkins families, as I am a great grandson of Sarah Ann Tomlinson. I'm new to Rootschat, but I presume we don't want to clog up the message boards with personal information, so what's the best way of me giving you my email address, or can you access it through Rootschat?
Look forward to hearing from you
