Title: Mayzes families living in Battersea
Post by: MickBakunin on Saturday 13 December 08 16:58 GMT (UK)
Jonas Mayzes (1803 - 1876 Battersea) and his wife Mehitabel Unknown (1805 Suffolk - 1892 Battersea) had about 10 children. One of their descendants was Samuel James Mayzes born February 17 1879 in Battersea. I cannot find this person in the 1881 census, although there are three Mayzes families living on Currie Street in Battersea at that time.

:-\Where I am really confused is that later in life there appear to be two Samuel James Mayzes born in 1879. One married Minnie Jane Ball in 1901. Another married Amelia Excell in 1900. Both produced several children in the 20th century, so I do not believe that they are the same person.

I would like to establish the connections between Samuel James Mayzes to Jonas Mayzes. The various families arrived in Battersea via Essex.

Many Thanks,

Mick

Looks like Samuel James is listed as James in the 1881 census, with parents George and Lydia at 3 Woodgate St Battersea.  RG11/652 f 98 p 9

Only one Sam* J M on the 1901 - not allowing for mistrans that is - married to the Amelia you mention ..

and only one Birth entry in FreeBMD .... have you searched for the death of Amelia, it might be your man marrying agin quite quickly ?

There are 3 children of Jonas & Mehitabel in the IGI:

George Mayzes 1846 Raily, Essex, England

William Mayzes  1843 Raily, Essex, England

Samuel James Mayzes  17 MAR 1844 Hadleigh, Essex, England

George must be the father of Samuel James (birthplace and year tie in), therefore S J would be the grandson of Jonas.

have you got both Marriage Certs - Fathers name would help - I cant see another Sam in the Births indexes altho there are a couple of James elsewhere in the country 1875 - 1885

Thank you for your replies. Yes, I had seen that 1881 census information. I wonder whether Samuel James Mayzes can be found in the 1891 census aged about 12.

Amelia Excell lived from 1880 to 1960 and had children between 1907 and 1914. Minnie Jane Ball had children between 1901 and 1905. I do not know when Minnie Jane Ball died. Samuel James Mayzes married in Sep 1900 Wandsworth 1d 1134 and Dec 1901 Wandsworth 1d 1295 so I expect that there are two Samuel James Mayzes persons.

There was a Samuel James Mayzes born 1844 in Essex and I speculate that he is the father of Samuel James Mayzes born 1879. I cannot find either in the 1881 census (perhaps they were missed). The latter produced decendants Samuel James Mayzes 1902 and grandson Samuel James Mayzes in 1923. Samuel James Mayzes (1844 - 1912) married Caroline Sarah Baker (1844 - 1901) in 1877. It is this couple that I cannot find in the census.

Unfortunately I do not possess any certificates - the specific dates come from other sources (living Mayzes). If I cannot figure things out using census data I will invest in a birth certificate for Samuel James Mayzes born 1879.

The 2 marriage Certs would better help differentiate and see if there was a Doppelganger or not ?

There are 2 further births for Samuel James - presumably one to each family -1902 and 1905

and a death for Samuel James aged 68 yrs in 1912.

1881 has him and Caroline both born 1844 but i can't see them further They only have Sarah with them aged 14 yrs in 1881.

I'm sure I saw George and Lydia with a group of Edwards?

So we have 1 Samuel to George and none to Samuel so the only other possibility is William ?

It is of course, possible that its Sam snr (1844) who marries in 1901, after the death of Caroline ?

she dies in June quarter 1901 so it is a possibility but Mick did say they were both born c 1879 - perhaps that was just assuming a 'usual' marrying age.

Where does he say that they were both  born 1879 ?

anyway, like i've said a couple of times, the Marriage Certs are the key to this - if it is 2 different Sams marrying in 1900 and 1901, it has to be the younger chap b1879 and the older chap b1844, after his missus Caroline had died

or amI mixing things up even more ?  ;)

Thank you all for your hard work, and detailed contributions. I do appreciate it.

Looking at my sources I see that I need to purchase a few certificates, and the 1911 census should answer some of the questions posed. Samuel James Mayzes (1844 - 1912) did live a long and shall we say vigorous life. I have been told that a book was written about him, though I do not have a copy. (The Life & Times of Samuel James Mayzes?). Certainly it is possible that he married Amelia Excell in 1901. I admit that I "guessed" that Amelia's spouse was born in 1879, and thereby created confusion.

Now I am going to enter this new information into my Family Tree Maker database software.

Thanks Again,

Mick

Heywood - that Charles is MEYES in 1881, with a wife Elizabeth, but with Lydia in 1891 (same address of Wye Street) as Meyzes - maybe just a coincidence as he is consistant about PoB Battersea in those yeras.

:) Pleasure Mick - but do come back and tell us what the Certs reveal  :)

I have found some additional information from the forms they completed when they left England and entered Canada.

Samuel James Mayzes (1844 - 1912) married Caroline Sarah Baker (1844- 1901)
He then married Minnie Jane Ball (born 1873) in 1901. After Samuel James died Minnie married Charles White in 1914.

Samuel and Minnie's oldest son was Samuel James Mayzes (1902 - 1981), who married Joanne Moore and produced Samuel James Mayzes (1924 - 1983).

Samuel James Mayzes (1844 -1912) had a brother George Mayzes (1846 -1897). George named one of his sons Samuel James Mayzes. This son lived from 1879 to 1965, married Amelia Excell and produced a son Samuel James Mayzes in 1905.

Thanks again for all the look ups and suggestions.

Michael

Hi,
I am part of a very large 'wing' of the Mayzes family tree living in Canada.  I also heard that Samuel James Mayzes had written a book.  We used to have a copy around but no one seems to know where it has gotten to.  Has anyone know anything about it?  We are trying to put together this very large family tree.

Thanks so much!

Hi, I have just recently started trying to research my family history.  My last name also is Mayzes.  I did not realize how hard it really is to find out about your family history and how many "road blocks" I seem to run into time after time.  I happened by chance to come across this discussion and I just had to reply to it.  I certainly hope that my reply doesn't further confuse anyone who is also researching the Mayzes family history.  The information I have is as follows:

My father is - Samuel James Mayzes - born April 13, 1934 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

His siblings were Dorothy Amelia Mayzes born about 1935 and died Oct. 9, 1952 at age 17 in a house fire in Traverse City, Michigan.
John Vincent Mayzes Jr., born about 1937 and died Oct. 9, 1952 at age 15 in a house fire in Traverse City, Michigan.
Also there was a sister named Alice Rose Mayzes and another brother named Paul William Mayzes.  I don't have any more information on Alice Rose or Paul William.  (Just an added bit of information....my father was also in this house fire but escaped by jumping out of a second story window.  I don't know any more about the fire but sure wish I did).

His mother (my grandmother) - Dorothy Dora Kline - born Feb. 14, 1914 in Ypsilanti, Michigan and Died Sept. 2, 1995 in Gaston, Lexington County, South Carolina and is buried in Gaston, South Carolina at Bethel Independent Bible Church Cemetery.
His father (my grandfather) - John Vincent Mayzes - born Oct. 2, 1914 in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.  Date of death unknown.

His grandmother (my great grandmother) which is Dorothy's mother - Helen Kline (maiden name, date of birth, place of birth and date of death currently unknown by me).

His grandfather (my great grandfather) which is Dorothy's father - David D. Kline (date of birth, place of birth and date of death currently unknown by me).

His grandmother (my great grandmother) which is John Vincent's mother - Amelia Exell - born May 8, 1880 in Battersea, London, England and died July 23, 1960 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Buried in Washtenaw County, Forest Hill Cemetery in Michigan.  She immigrated to Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada and then to Michigan in the U.S.

His grandfather (my great grandfather) which is John Vincent's father - Samuel James Mayzes - born Feb. 17, 1879 in Battersea, London, England and died August 2, 1965 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Buried in Washtenaw County, Forest Hill Cemetery in Michigan.  He immigrated to Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada and then to Michigan in the U.S.

His great grandfather (my great great grandfather) which is Amelia's father - Walter Exell - born Nov. 3, 1853 and died Jan. 6, 1919.

His great grandmother (my great great grandmother) which is Amelia's mother - Alice Amelia Checkley - born Dec. 14, 1852 and died Sept. 23, 1924.  They also had another daugher named Beatrice Exell - born 1896 - London, England.

His great grandfather (my great great grandfather) which is Samuel James' father - George Mayzes - born 1858 and died 1894.

His great grandmother (my great great grandmother) which is Samuel James' mother - Lydia Cunningham - born 1858 and died April 5, 1912

My great grandparents - Samuel James and Amelia had the following children:
Florence Amelia Mayzes who married Percival George Robbins in Ontario, Canada.
Alice Mayzes - born 1902 in Battersea, London, England.  She married Frank Sharkey.  They immigrated to Ontario, Canada about 1906 and arrived in Michigan, U.S. in 1925.
Samuel James Mayzes, Jr. - born 1905, Wandsworth, London, England and died 1929, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Rose Mayzes - born August 16, 1906 in London,  England.  Date of death unknown by me.  She married Walter John Buss.
Frank D. Mayzes - born 1911 and died 1933 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
George Mayzes - born April 2, 1914 and died June 22, 1980.  He married Beulah Betty Hood.
Charles J. Mayzes - born August 28, 1918 in Barrie, Ontario, Canada and died Feb. 23, 1966 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He married Leona F. Allen.  (He was a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy World War II).
Kathleen Mayzes - born Nov. 27, 1907 in Barrie, Ontario, Canada and died Oct. 22, 1908 in Barrie, Ontario, Canada at age 11 months (from Ontario Deaths 1869-1947).
Male Mayzes - born April 26, 1909 in Barrie, Ontario, Canada and died May 17, 1909 in Barrie, Ontario, Canada at age 21 days (from Ontario Deaths 1869-1947).

Again, I hope what I've added to this discussion doesn't confuse anyone but I truely do hope that it will help someone with their search of their family history.  I would love to hear from anyone who might have further information that I might be able to add to what I already have found.  Thank you for letting me take up so much of your time.

Anxiously Waiting,
Bea

Hi Bea!
This mayzes family trees is sooo confusing.  Samuel james mayzes is the name of my grandfathers dad. My grandpa, William Benjarmin Mayzes was born in 1929.  My Grandpa is out of town right now but he has been collecting information for years. I am going to get together with him when he gets back and try to piece it all together.  I will keep you updated.  You can email me at courtneypjames at yahoo . com.  If you'd like.

Looking for family connections. My husband is related to the Mayzes family. His maternal grandmother's uncle was Jim Mayzes who emigrated to Simcoe County, Canada (Barrie and Holstein, Ontario). He and his family eventually moved to Ann Arbor Michigan. Ivy Farrell- whose mother was Eliza Mayzes- was a Home Child who was sent to Canada with the Barnardo Foundation and lived with Jim and his family in Holstein.

Ivy eventually married William Wesley John Sandercock, and lived in Toronto (East York). We bought their house when she died, and we only sold it four years ago (2010). We now live in Stratford, Ontario. Would love to reconnect with family members- we have just inherited photos, including photos of children, one of which we believe is Thomas Mayzes, who survived the sinking of the Titanic.

I can be reached at (*) We hope we will hear from someone here....how wonderful it would be to learn more.

This post is intended to suggest how the various branches of the MAYZES family (mentioned in previous posts) fit together:

Jonas Mayzes (1800-1876)  was born at Barnardiston, Suffolk. Barnardiston is about 20 km SE from Cambridge. Jonas was a clock and watch maker.
On November 22 1835 he married Mehitabel Bareham at Steeple, Essex. Steeple is about 50 km NE from London.
Jonas and Mehitabel had eight children. Their four sons (who sustained the Mayzes name) were:
1.   William Mayzes (1843-1908)
2.   Samuel James Mayzes (1844-1912)
3.   George Mayzes (1846-1897)
4.   Daniel Mayzes (1851-1934)

1. William married Emma Faulkner in 1863 and they had six children. This family lived in Battersea.

2. Samuel James Mayzes (1844-1912) married three times and had two sons with his wife Minnie Jane Bell.
a) Samuel James Mayzes (1902-1981)
b) Benjamin Mayzes (1905-1991)
Many of their descendants live in Western Canada.

3. George married Lydia Cunningham in Dartford in 1867. They had 11 children. Seven sons and four daughters that include:
a) Eliza Mayzes (1872- not known) Eliza married Richard John Farrell in 1892. Their child Ivy Nellie Farrell was born in 1903.

b) Samuel James Mayzes (1879-1965) married Emilia Exell (1880-1960) child:
Walter William Mayzes (1912-1958) born Barrie Ontario; died MI USA

c) Thomas Jubilee Mayzes (1887 – 1928) survived the Titanic sinking.

4. Daniel married Eliza Ann Colgate in 1872 and they had 10 children. This family lived in Battersea and Dartford.

I hope this helps.

Michael

I was just wondering if anyone was still following this thread. My grandfather was Walter William Mayzes (1912-1958). His parents were Samuel James Mayzes and Amelia Exell (Exell could be a middle or last name). My line comes from a very short marriage 1951-1953. On his death certificate his wife's name is listed as Lareine, I think. It's not very legible.

There was a post on this thread from a James W Mayzes that also claimed Walter William Mayzes as grandfather. I would love to make contact with him if anyone knows him, but would be tickled pink just to learn more about my family.
