Title: Elizabeth Anne CRABB (1850)
Post by: doctorbob on Monday 15 December 08 10:53 GMT (UK)
Hi

Elizabeth married Hugo Francis Hawkins in Plymouth, 1862 (she was very young!). He was a cook in the RN on HMS Himalaya. I believe the CRABB family came from Exeter, but the census records for Eliza say Exeter, DORSET (and it clearly says Dorset!). She also says Taunton in another census!

So, given there's a big pocket of Crabb's in the Bridport area, I am wondering if my Eliza's family were from that area?

She's my gt-gmother.

So, if anyone knows about this family around the 1850's, I would be greatful for contact.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

I hope you don't mind me linking this to your Devon request, just to avoid duplication

Hi Tati

No problem linking it ... just thought that it was worth posting into the Dorset area because the census does throw up loads from Bridport area and maybe my folk might be a famliy offshoot ... so worth tapping into any local "Dorset knowledge".

I went to school in Crewkerne Grammar (61-68)and spent many a fine time down at Lyme Regis (and the local girls school there sent their lovely lasses up to our socials!).

And yes, we were "on a roll", but none of the Crabb lines seem to pan out ... but, we now have some useful lines to follow once I get the MC back.

The best bit was that Hugo Francis was also known as Hugh, but mainly Francis (he signed up to the RN in 1871 as Francis Hawkins). I got his service record from the NA. Also, the whole famliy was living in Plymouth in 1861, but father was not on the census (mother was still marked Married, no widow). Perhaps he was a seaman and was at sea.

Regards

Rob

Hi Rob,

Have you looked at the records available on www.opcdorset.com?

Hi

Thanks NJ,

Just had a quick trawl ... didn't find anything particularly useful ... but there are some Crabb family there in the records, but nothing to perhaps tie up to my people.

I'll keep looking.

Hi!

I know this thread is nearly 6 years old but I'm hoping the OP is still following!

I believe your Elizabeth may be a relative of mine too! Did she have a son called Frederick Hawkins Crabb? I believe that he may be my gg grandfather although he appears to have dropped the Hawkins in later life. Frederick became a coast guard and moved to Donegal, Ireland with his family before settling in Islandmagee, Co. Antrim. Our family still lives in Co. Antrim!

I would love hear any info you have on the family!

Thank you.
