Hello Heddwch:

I have just checked the B.C. Vital Stats death records on line and found the following:

Thomas     Gwilt
Died   April 8 1968 in Port Alberni, B.C.

Reg# 1968- 09-005331

There is only 9 people listed with the surname Gwilt on the death records.

Hope this is of some help.

I will pick up the record in the next day or so. Possibly the informant is a family member which may help. I will post when I get it.

I found a border crossing for a Thomas Gwilt who lived in Winnipeg in 1910. The record indicates he was 28 and born in Ludlow, England. He was travelling with his wife Mabel. The record also indicates he arrived in Canada in Jun 1904.

I found Thomas and Mabel Gwilt on the 1911 census in Russell, Manitoba as follows:

Thomas ? Gwilt, head, 29, Sep 1881, born in England, immigration year 1904, carpenter
Mabel Gwilt, wife, 21, Oct 1889, born in Ontario

Here's a link to the image at Library and Archives Canada (last entry on page):
http://data2.collectionscanada.ca/1911/pdf/e001949166.pdf

I found this passenger list which has Thomas Gwilt, 22, carpenter travelling on the Dominion which departed fromLiverpool on 26 May 1904 and arrived in Montreal on 5 Jun 1904. His destination is listed as Russell, Manitoba. Here is a link to the image at Library and Archives Canada (he's third from the bottom):

It looks like Thomas and Mabel went to England after they were married to visit and returned in 1910. They were aboard the Victorian which departed Liverpool on 13 May 1910 and arrived in Quebec on 20 May 1910.

The Manitoba Vital Statistics genealogy database has a marriage between Thomas Gwilt and Mabel Webster dated 28 Dec 1904 in Russell, Manitoba. If you would like to order a copy of the registration it costs $12. Here's a link to the website:

If you would like the images from the border crossing (2 pages), please PM me your email address and I'll send them to you.

I picked up the two death records, for Thomas Gwilt and for Mable Gwilt. In both cases the informant is the same son. Although the deaths are recorded in Port Alberni (hospital) they apparently lived at Bowser which is a very small community on the east side of Vancouver Island. The son lived there at the time as well.
I will send a PM about getting get a copy to you.

If you look at Canada 411 there are 9 listings for Gwilt, 3 of which are in Bowser, BC.

A whole new branch to the family tree. How exciting.

Hi Heddwch,

If you put White Pages and the name of a country in Google you can access telephone directories from many places.

If you do that for Canada and look for people named Gwilt in British Columbia you will see the names and addresses of all the ones who have listed phone numbers. Occasionally people will choose to only publish the phone number and not the address.

Good Luck.

You're grandfather was Thomas Gwilt born in England; father was Jack Gwilt (John Hugh Gwilt, aka Jack) born in Courtney, BC.  Hope this helps.

I am researching Thomas Gwilt right now.  I will be travelling to Courtenay, BC for a couple of weeks to view his old property, and to share information with someone else who is also researching Thomas.  He was my great-grandfather; his daughter, Helen Gwilt, was my grandmother.  In his old age, Thomas lived on my grandparents' property on Sprout Lake, near Port Alberni, BC, until he passed on.  He had a small cottage on their property, which was a Motel as well.

I actually met him when I was really small, and have a couple of memories.  My nickname for him was "Old, old grandpa with the whiskers", as he had a grey mustache.  He always wore his 3 piece suit.  I am interested in communicating with anybody who is a living relative, or who has information that they'd like to share.  :)

Hello Mandybred and a very warm welcome to RootsChat  :).

You can use this link to the telephone directory to find potential family members. Put just the last name in the person slot and British Columbia in the location. Contact info is provided. Good luck.

Hello again....

It is against the rules of RootsChat to discuss living or potentially living people but we can guide you.
Below is a link to the image of the death registration of your Thomas. If you check the location of the informant, you could use this as a starting point for contacting a possible rellie at the link I gave you above for the phone directory. There is a good possibility family (descendents) have stayed in the same area.
