IVY ASHWORTH (born circa 1912 ROCHDALE) and CLARA KEANE emigrated to Waterbury, Connecticut, USA. INFORMATION/CONTACTS sought, please ???
-
Hi.
Just to clarify are the names Ivy Ashworth & Clara Keane maiden names or married names ?
Regards
John

Are you looking for details of them both in America or in England?
When would they have gone to America and would they have travelled together? You can check index (free) at www.findmypast.com to see if you get a year for them leaving the U.K.
1930 is the latest available U.S. census- if they were in U.S. before 1930 you can search www.ancestry.com (although you need a subscription to view the details you can often get quite a bit by gradually narrowing down the search criteria).

Sorry to be so long in replying (Christmas holiday, etc.). Ivy Ashworth was her unmarried name, but Clara Keane was married with 3 children. I am waiting for more information and also a photo of Clara from a relative, so please be patient with me.
I am grateful for the advice and interest.
Best wishes for 2009 - Margaretmarion

Thank you for the information regarding the birth of Ivy Ashworth and the date of arrival in the US. I am interested in any news of them/their descendants in Connecticut. I know that Clara Keane had 3 children and am awaiting a photo and more information on them. I shall post the information as soon as it arrives.

Just to throw a spanner or two in the works-
SS Scythia arrived Jan 20 1922 at New York
Ivy Ashworth aunt Clara Keane 1777 Thomaston Watewell ??? Connecticut
Birth of Ivy Ashworth registered 2nd Quarter 1910 at Rochdale
Passenger manifest says Ivy is age 17 (born c1905) and going to Mrs. J.R. [Clara] Keane, Friend [Aunt] 1777 Homeston Ave Waterbury [Conn] - words in brackets have been handwritten to typed manifest. Aunt's address is prbably Thomaston Ave. in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Next problem-
1930 USA census - Union City New Jersey
William Keane Head 57 married at 21 b Pennsylvania parents Irish
Clara Keane Wife 58 married at 21 b England parents English
Charles Keane s 26 single b New Jersey
George Keane s 25 b New Jersey
Mary Keane d 23 s b New Jersey
Olga Keane d 16 b New Jersey
According to the above census Clara (wife of a William Keane) had 4 children all born in New Jersey (1904-1914).
If the Ivy Ashworth in shipping list is correct her age doesn't match up with birth registration found in England (in an earlier post). Also, Clara Keane's husband either William or J.R. Keane (?) and if Clara's children born 1904-1914 in N.J. and they are living in N.J. in 1930 is this Clara the one that Ivy Ashworth was going to stay with in Connecticut in 1922?
-
Hi,
This is getting more complicated by the minute !!
There are 2 Ivy Ashworth registered in Rochdale, 1 = 1st quarter of 1905 , 2 = 3rd quarter 1905.
According to SS Scythia's records the Ivy who arrived in New York in Jan 1922 gave as her nearest relative in the UK as her aunt Mrs Mary E Lofthouse 19 Wilson Street, Rochdale.

I am SO grateful for the interest shown in this item.
The info on the 1930 census is not the Clara Keane above. The Keanes had 3 children, 2 being James & Robert. Yes, Clara Keane was the Aunt of Ivy Ashworth and, apparently, emigrated to the USA, then came back later for Ivy Ashworth. I have been just in contact with my relative and the further information will be with me shortly. I have just looked at GOOGLE and put in 177 Homeston Avenue, Waterbury, Connecticut and was asked if I meant 177 Thomaston Avenue, Waterbury, Conn, as there IS such an address there. So perhaps the files had the wrong address?
More soon ......
Many thanks - Margaretmarion

The 1922 passenger manifest is typed (with bits written in later) so it's possible that there are typing errors.

I am really SO overwhelmed with the responses that I have received - very many thanks. More information as follows:
Ivy Ashworth & Clara Kean (note spelling):
Clara Clegg b. 1887 Rochdale, died 1962 in Thomaston, Connecticut, married James Robert Kean (b. 1886) 23 December 1905, Rochdale Registry office. They had 4 children: James Robert, b. 1907, George b. not known, Frank, b. 1912, Leigh, b. 1916. (not sure where the 4 children were born, but probably USA). James Robert (b. 1907) married Agnes; Frank married Ruth Griffin; Leigh married Edith. One of the sons had 3 children: Donald, Clifford & Karen. I would very much appreciate more information on Clara’s descendants, please.
Clara and James Robert Kean went to the USA on the ‘Lucinia’ in March 1909? (the date isn’t very clear on the document). Clara Kean was aunt to Ivy Ashworth. Clara Clegg was married 3 times (Clegg was her single name). Her name at time of death was Clara Bristow (her 3rd husband being “Uncle Ted” Bristow).
Ivy Ashworth: parents, Sarah Jane Clegg (b. 1884, died 1947) and Squire Ashworth (b. 1877, died 1940, Rochdale) married 17 May 1902 Rochdale. The information given re. Mary Lofthouse is correct as she was Ivy’s aunt and sister to Clara. Apparently, Clara returned to England and took Ivy back to the USA with her.
I shall have 3 photos to post to RootsChat when they arrive in the post.
Very many thanks, again and sorry for any previous errors – Margaretmarion

Glad that some of the information found was useful but just remember details of living people shouldn't be posted here. It anyone can help with finding descendants of Clara then they can send you a PM (personal message).
-
Thanks for the reminder re. living relatives.

Thank you for letting me know. I shall now post all the information on the USA page as I think I have gone as far as I can investigating news of them from existing family in Lancashire.

I realise this is an old topic but I've just picked up on it. Ivy and Clara were my relatives on my dad's side. He was William H Ashworth from Rochdale. Would love to hear any updates.

Hi Margaret, just had a good laugh with Brenda about our crossed wires. I recently took the DNA test on Ancestry and just wanted to fill in the last part of my tree. Never mind, I'll get there in the end!
Best Wishes
