Title: Blackrock Nicholas Smyth fisherman
Post by: emmag on Friday 26 December 08 16:59 GMT (UK)
I am looking to find some info on my great-grandfather the above who I believe lived in Sandy Lane Blackrock Haggardstown. He died in 1964 as is on his gravestone and was married to Bridget. Would be grateful if someone can look him up on any of the censuses.

 Kind Regards

1911 census (latest one available) will eventually be online (and then 1901):
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/futureplans.html

These are the only 2 complete censuses for all Ireland.

Hi You can physically go to the Public records office in Bishop Sreet Dublin [National Archives] and do the search directly there.
I have personally  conducted a few searches for Blackrock there, for 1911 and 1901....it is quite easy.
There are still quite a few Smyths in Blackrock still.....

Checked now.........no Louth hits at all and no notification from N Arch. They seem to have all the counties up on the tickbox.....but I am not so sure all that work could happen so quickly since I last checked.

they decided to release all the data today, while they are still working on checking and correcting any errors.

You may have to try spelling variations (first and second name) or search by location.

Not finding any names for Blackrock :'(

not sure what's going on there... the town of Blackrock is listed but has no occupants : http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Louth/Haggardstown/

I see a Sandy Grove, Blackrock on modern maps but no sign that I can see the street on the 1911 returns.

Thanks Shane

There are no names coming up under haggardstown, Blackrock on the census. I presume this must be an error

the closest name that I see is a Nickles Smyth (age 45)  - but he's not in Blackrock or a fisherman : http://www.rootschat.com/links/06zq/

looking at the form the firstname looks like Nickless??

Thanks Shane

I saw that too. It's not him and the one on the census can't read or write, hence the spelling error :-[

I suppose if he was a fisherman he could have been out on his boat that day and not included in the census ? I know ships in port are usually included, but people at sea could not be.

Do you know the names of any of his family .. wife, children etc ?

It does look like there is some sort of problem with Blackrock..zero occupants does not sound right. Hopefully its one the fixes they are working on.

Thanks for your help Shane. I have tried looking for other people but with no success, hopefully they just need to add the inhabitants of the town.

Hi there
I have been in the chatroom with some other people who are reporting that there are problems....so let the hare sit.
Blackrock , in 1911 was just one location....it didnt have sandy grove etc.....I am from there and have gone through the original returns a few times. I will check it out tomorrow. Emmag..if u are from Blackrock or live there...most people would know of Nicholas..

Thankyou for your message. It is very frustrating. Glad to know it is not me. I live in London, so it is not easy for me to talk to people and my father had no contact with the Smyth side (long story!). I do know that the Smyths lived in Sandy Lane Blackrock for a long time and I would love to know more about them

Your best bet is to take out a small ad in the Dundalk Democrat or the Argus.

:-\  I have looked on the 1901 census for Blackrock as the 1911 one is still not online. I have found Bridget Dullahan, age 17 working for the Carroll's (hoteliers) in Blackrock. I cannot though find Nicholas Smyth. Would anyone be able to help?

Thanks for all your help. I have done this but it only brings up Blackrock in 1901 and no sign of Nicholas....where could he be?
