the tobberpatrick/tinahealy area as far as i know
have traced back on my fathers side to my great grand parents
ernest evans and margaret doyle on one side and myles lawless and elizabeth kelly on the other.
as far as i know ernest was meant to be a game keeper in powerscourt at some time
-
was told that ernest evans (great grandfather) was a gamekeeper in powerscourt, where would be the best place to look for records on that or
is it still in operation
-
Was at Powerscourt Co. Wicklow years ago and the gardens were beautiful, even though the main house was just a shell after a fire gutted it.
Not sure about estate records but there should be lots about Powerscourt online.
www.powerscourt.ie
-
grand will have a look
might even drop down when the weather gets better
-
thanks aghadowey just sent off an email
will post how i get on
-
Will be interested to hear how you get on. The gardens themselves are well worth the visit and the house has been restored since I was there.
-
got a mail back from powerscourt no records left
alas

Sorry Justin, I should have explained what G.P.V. was but this will explain it better than I can.
Griffiths Primary Valuation of Ireland
"This was a survey of property occupiers in Ireland made between 1848 and 1864 and it's importance lies in the fact that it lists almost every head of household for each county.
(Only head of household as they were responsible for payment of the tax)
Explanation of the Griffiths Primary Valuation
This valuation records every landowner and householder in Ireland in a period shortly after the famine.
Julia
An Act was passed in 1826 that allowed for a uniform valuation of property in all Ireland in order to levy the county cess charges and grand Jury Rates. Thus began an assessment of the whole country, county by county by Sir Richard Griffith.
Amendments were passed to the 1826 Act, the first in 1831 excluded those houses under the annual valuation of £3, another in 1836 excluded houses under £5
The information given in the Griffiths is the following:
The townland address and householders name; the name of the person from whom the property is leased; a description of the property; the acreage and the valuation.
If a surname was common in an area then the surveyors adopted the practise of indicating the fathers name to show the difference between two people of the same Christian name and surname (usually).
So Tadgh O'Brien (Michael) is the son of Michael O'Brien and Tadgh O'Brien (James) is the son of James O'Brien. However, here in Ireland people of the same name could/can be distinguished simply by indicating the colour of their hair (as gaeilge - thru Irish ) so it would have been sufficient in those instances to indicate that one Tadgh had red hair and one Tadgh black - calling them respectively Tadgh (Red) O'Brien and Tadgh (Black) O'Brien
To confuse those who come in search of ancestors has always been the ambition of the very Ancestors!!"

Julia,
Absolutely wonderful information! Thank you so, so much. You have just told me who my great, great, great grandparents are! John Evans and Mary Lawless. Do you know anything else about them?
Do you know if there are any photos available of Richard / Earnest?
It's amazing how much you have already told me. Lovely to meet you here. Where are you living now? Are you also a family member?
Thanks again,
Anne-Marie

Hi Anne Marie,
Glad to be of some help. I was helped along the way in tracing a grand uncle in Main, USA, by a kind lady who I had never met, and the only way I can say thank you is to try and help others.
My mother always said "if someone does you a good turn, do someone else a good turn and the world would be a better place."
Julia nee Evans and Thomas Corkish's 3rd child Tommy is my son-in-laws father. I new Julia growing up also most of their children. In fact their 7th child Maggie taught me how to walk at the age of 9 mths before she went to live in Northern Ireland, that was not yesterday, ha ha, as I am now in my 70s.
Being the 4th generation living in the same house, & being in business in the same place is a great help in getting to know the locals and their families which I have been interested in for about 25 yrs at least.
I am quite parochial as my interest is mainly Wicklow Town. I would love to be of assistance to any ex Wicklow Town persons, if I can.
I am a founder member of our local Wicklow Genealogical Society, we are a small group of like minded people who meet once a month in Wicklow and discuss our problems and try to help one another. I have also connected a descendant of the Evans family here in Wicklow to other members and they have met up. If you know anyone living near Wicklow Town they are more than welcome to came and meet us the 3rd Wednesday of each month in Ozram House, The Mall, Wicklow Town, next door to St. Vincent De Paul Shop at 8.30 p.m. Our next meeting is Wednesday next the 21st March. P.G. Keep in touch.
Regards
Julia

Hi Julia,
I like that saying very much indeed. Your mother was a wise woman. I'll be sure to carry on that chain of good turns!
How far back does your knowledge of the Evans family go? Maggie, who taught you how to walk, is my grandmother! My mother is called Julia (although she goes by her middle name Miriam).
Thank you very much indeed for the invitation to the Wednesday meetings. I would love to go, however I now live in Brighton. At some point this year or certainly next I'll be planning a trip to see Powerscourt, and would love to meet you, either at that Wednesday meeting or otherwise, if that's okay with you, of course.
What wonderful things I have found out from you! Thanks again. Would love to see any photos, if you have any.
All the best,
Anne-Marie

Does anyone know who Thomas Corkish's parents are? Born 1885 in Isle of Man. Thanks
-
got a birth cert for an uncle i only discovered about a while ago, john (jack) Evans, (my fathers brother)
he was meant to have died in Baltinglass hospital at approx 14 in 1941
contacted Baltinglass hospital but, as seems to be the case in searching for records, a fire destroyed all records in 1947
the records office in Lombard street had no record/cert of the death, which i thought they would have
ah well back to the drawing board

Very interesting Julia. I'm hoping to learn more about the Manx relatives. Your story about my granny teaching you how to walk has gone down very well with my family in Belfast!

Hi Ann-Marie F and Nitsuj,
We had a very successful fundraiser on Sunday last. A small committee headed by your cousin John Goodman are trying to have a memorial erected to all who fought or were involved in any conflict concerning both Wicklow men and woman, of all religions. There was an exhibition with lots of photos, I must say mainly of men in uniform, and some good stories. This is the first of many we hope to have in order to eventually open a museum in the town.
At one stage there were three Celtic Crosses and two of them are still visible on the roof of St. Patrick’s Church. The third was a much bigger and heavier cross about 6ft tall, which stood on the 2nd terrace in the front of our church. Local lore said ‘it was meant to be put on top of the church but was too heavy to lift on to the roof’. We have pictures of it, but for some reason in the 1950's it was removed.
During Fr. Blake’s term of office as P.P. in Wicklow (1949-1959) he did a lot of very good work in the parish church and grounds. The church was surrounded by very large trees which he had removed to open up the dark and dismal grounds. Rumour has it that he “did not like the ‘Sheila-na-gigs’ on this granite cross”, so had it removed and buried in the church grounds: where exactly is not know at the moment. A lot of people remember it but cannot say where it was buried. With the permission and encouragement from our present P.P. and the help of Dr. Greame Warren, Lecturer in the College of Arts & Celtic studies, School of Archaeology, Belfield, Dublin, we are endeavouring to locate it. If anyone out there has any idea where it is buried we would be grateful.
To get back to genealogy, is S M still working on the family tree? She visited the Library on the IOM some years ago and gave them information on Thomas Philip (bc 1884 IOM) who married Julia (Bab) Evans. She and I exchanged information a long time ago but have since lost touch. I would be nice to get in touch with her again.
I would love to know more about Bab (Julia's) husband Thomas Philip. Where in the IOM was he born? His father Jack was killed by Ramsey Lifeboat, he was one of the launching crew when? I would also like to know something about Maggie & Joseph Morgan's children - Your Aunts and Uncles - to place you into this tree please.
Nitsuj what was your mother's christian & maiden name also your Grandmother Elizabeth ? I have lots of gaps in the tree that I would love to fill.

Thank you Shanew 147, will do in future.

Sorry but this may not be related at all. I read the name John Goodman from Wicklow in your comments. I am on the Hertfordshire uk site as bgoodman. Is there any chance that John Goodman could be related to my Goodman family from Rickmansworth.

Just some information on the Corkish family.....
The Parents of Thomas Corkish were....
Henry Corkish and Elizabeth Garret
The Parents of Henry were...
John Corkish and Elizabeth Magee
and Elizabeth's Parents were...
Hugh Magee and Elizabeth Skillicorn
I picked up this on some Isle of Man Sites...it might at least point in the right direction

Just catching up on this post as its been quite a while since i looked at it - Its funny to see you all talking about Evans living in Powerscourt as I actually grew up there. In my research I have found come across the Evans living there (Anne Evans) but I have not been able to relate to my tree.
Mark

Hi Mark,
Wow, what a place to grow up! I'm planning a quick visit to Powerscourt after Christmas, to see where my great great grandfather was gameskeeper. When did you live there?
All the best,
Anne-Marie
-
We move there when I was 4 back in the early 70's but I've working and travelling abroad since I finished college in the early 90's. My Parents retired to Kerry about 6 years ago but a couple of my brothers still live locally. Is changed a lots in the last 20 years but it was the best place to grow up.
-
Just to let you know I found out today that the PArish records from Delgany COI church from 1666 - 1900 is now online (PDF form) at - http://ireland.anglican.org/about/152

Very interesting, thanks! So are we related then, or are you from another Evans family? Do you have any stories of the history of Powerscourt? Must have been an amazing place to spend childhood in.
Thanks again,
Anne-Marie

I have been reading this chat in the hope that someone may be researching the Evans family of Arklow. The direct family line in which I am particularly interested includes Edward Evans (1801-1852), John Fairbrother Evans (1837-1915), John Fairbrother Evans (1876-1937). There appears to be no connection with Evans in Greystones/Delgany/Wicklow. Is there anyone out there who shares this interest?
-
Hi
I am Lisa Byrne (nee) Corkish. Daughter of Gerry and Denise Corkish and Thomas Philip Corkish was my great grandad.
-
It should be *Corkish
-
Hi Justin,
Have just come back to your post and have worked out you and my son in law John Paul Corkish are 2nd cousins. Are you still researching the Evans family?
Regards J.M.
-
Hi Lisa.
Was Mary called Polly your grandmother?
