Hi Jude
Hes not listed on the 1st 1000 volunteers in Nov 1914 but could have joined later...Was he from Bradford? The library has the City Roll which lists men who served with dates and addresses. It also has a card index of all men that are mentioned in the local papers.

If he went overseas he isnt listed as doing so with the Bradford Pals who were 16th and 18th West Yorkshire Regiment...There are also 2x Laveracks listed as WYR but not Frank.

This is your man.He enlisted in 1915 with North Staffs Regiment. He went to France after Jan 1916 and sometime later in 1917 transferred to Labour Corps.
Will email you the Pension Record he applied for also.
He served in 3rd and 9th North Staffs before transfer.

Entitled to British War and Victory Medals.
Good result as only 30% of records survive you are lucky! :)

Hello mmm45,

Do you by any chance have anyone by the name of Joseph Gullon on your list ?

He was in the ASC and we believe he signed up in Bradford.

Many thanks

Hi Mary
He isnt on the list but it only contains lads who joined the 16th West Yorks Regiment.
If he lived in Bradford theres a good chance his details are on the City Roll in the library.

Hes transcribed on the Medal Index Cards as George E Coulton
Served as 1550 Private in the West Yorkshire Regiment Then with York and Lancasters and finally with the Waterways and Railway companies of the Royal Engineers.
I suspect that he wasnt a Bradford Pal(they were 16th and 18th Batts West Yorkshire Regiment) but a member of the 1/6th or 2/6th West Yorkshires who were Territorials.
He went overseas after 1st Jan 1916 and was entitled to a British War and Victory medals

The 1/6th,2/6th were Bradford based Territorials.(BRADFORD PALS 16th Batt went overseas in Dec 1915 and were entitled to 15 Star)

There are Histories of the 6th Batt written by Major Tempest ...Its not unusual for a lad to be moved regiments when wounded.
Is he on the Roll in the City library...There maybe photos in the gallant heroes section also.

thanks Ady thats  brill  i will have a look at on the Roll in the City library, why i was looking for him in the Bradford Pals was because another article i found where his sons were all in the 2nd world war   at the same time it said he severed with the Bradford Pals ,I thought it might have been a surname error thats why i found it hard to trace him :)

Hi
I am a teacher in a Bradford primary school.  We are planning some work to commemorate the anniversary of WW1 and thought it might be more 'real' and relevant to the pupils if we found out about the Bradford Pals.  I was hoping t take it a stage further in my class by finding out about an actual soldier.  Someone has been kind enough to lend me her grandfather's medals, a photo and some postcards he sent home to his wife.  However, despite hours of searching, I cannot find any more information about him.  I stumbled across this site and wondered if anyone could help?
The man's name was Charles Edward Fawcett, his wife was Ellen Williamson, he had a daughter called Emily who died, and another daughter called Mary Annie Patricia Lily born in 1912.  He also had 2 brothers who died on the same day in the war, but I don't know their names.
Thank you for reading - I hope someone can help  xx

Hi
If you get your pupil to look at the rims of the medals then his number will be impressed into them
Only about 30% of records survive but we can help with some info and tell you where to look.
Suspect that one of brothers was Joseph Fawcett 18/76 from Listerhills on census he was killed on 1st day of Somme with 2nd Bradford Pals L...there was a brother called Richard too but can't see him listed as dead

Thank you so much for replying.
How do I find out more? I've found a book about the pals that I'm reading for general background, but would love to be able to tell the children about an actual person.

Have a Google of Great War Forum that will give you a lot of info on WW1
The Bradford Roll of Honour has been put online to view it has regiments and addresses of men from Bradford who served.

A guy called Tempest wrote the history of 1/6th there is a nominal roll in it.

He was originally numbered 2998 and probably injured or sick as he transferred to the Labour corps too.he was discharged in 1919

I thought that your idea was such a good one that I wanted to assist if I could so I spent an hour earlier looking up your chap.

His name was actually Charles Edmund Fawcett b. Bradford 11/3/1886. Son of John Robert Fawcett b. Leeds 1866 and Elizabeth Ann Clegg b. Gatehouse, Scotland 1863.

Baptised St Peter's Bradford 18/4/1886 (Became Bradford Cathedral 1919)

1901 Census: 44 Fieldhead Street, Listerhills.

1911 Census: 4 Primrose Terrace, Bradford. Lodger at his future wife's home. Ellen Williamson is 26 and a restaurant waitress. Charles is 25 and a Dyer's Labourer.

(Primrose Terrace no longer exists but 1911 Census return suggests it is just off White Abbey Road. Near to existing Primrose Street)

Charles had 4 brothers (Joseph Robert, Richard Clegg, William Frederick and Henry) and 2 sisters (Mary A and Isabella)

As Ady has already stated your man was not a Bradford Pal but his brother Joseph was.

Pte 18/176 Joseph Robert Fawcett was Killed in Action (KIA) on the first day of the Battle of the Somme (1/7/1916) serving with 18 Bn West Yorks (2nd Pals) Age 27. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France. Additional information states “Husband of Rhoda Fawcett, of 19, Lower Lane, Wakefield Rd., Bradford, Yorks.”

Pte 341036 Richard Clegg Fawcett – 1st Bn Northumberland Fusiliers KIA 23/8/1918 and is buried at Douchy-Les-Ayette British Cemetery in France. (CWGC has his number as 341026. Medal Index Card 341036)

So it is true that Charles had two brothers killed in WW1 but not on the same day.

I couldn't confirm military service for William Frederick but did find his marriage to Amy Hardaker 26/12/1919 at St Mary’s, Laisterdyke. He died in Bradford 1972 Age 76.

The fourth brother Henry died in 1912 age just 11 years old.

Charles married Ellen Williamson in 1911 and as far as I can tell they had just the two children that you mention.
Mary A.P.L. b. Bradford 1912
Emily b 1915 Bradford. d. 1917 Age 1 Yr.

Charles died in Bradford 1952 age 65.

I hope this is helpful and is not too late for you. If you need anything else or more detail please get in touch.

Martin

Martin, thank you so much for all of this information. The children have loved learning about ww1 and have done some fantastic work. Being able to handle the medals ands letters really helped.  They will be really interested in learning more about Charles. We spent a lot of time 'putting ourselves in his shoes'. The letters they wrote home from the trenches were great.
I will also pass on the information to Charles' granddaughter  who lent me the medals. I know she wanted to know more about him so she will be so happy with the information.
Thank you again, I really appreciate you giving up your time to find out so much for us. X

Hello. I have just discovered this post. I don't know if it was from this year or a previous year. I am a great grandson of Richard Clegg Fawcett, brother of Charles Fawcett who you were interested in. I would very much like to exchange information, photos etc with Charles Fawcett's granddaughter if that is possible. I have copies of several photos of family members of that generation (and before), including Charles, plus letters home from Richard and Joseph during WW1. Is there any way we could get in touch? By the way, I have also been in touch with descendants of Joseph Fawcett (and a much younger brother not mentioned). One of them has done a lot of family history research.

Not sure if anybody is looking at this but I would like help finding information on my Grandfather.
I believe he joined up with the Bradford Pals.
Private John Charles Parker 33467 Yorkshire Regiment.
I wondered if he was listed and what info is available.
My belief is he was wounded in Italy and possibly was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, not sure if he was eligible for any others.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello & Welcome.
Can you confirm he died in 1939 aged 25.
This would give him a D.O.B. of 1914.
