Title: lost family
Post by: janway on Tuesday 08 February 05 19:18 GMT (UK)
I have been trying to find my lost ancesters who I believe went to the US between 1884 and 1891.
I found an address in there niece's note book for
Aunt Jane
366 Roberson St, Fall River, MA but I don't know if or when they lived there.

the family is
John Charnley born 1851
Jane his wife, born 1857
Margaret A there daughter born 1874
Benjamin there son born 1875
they were all born in Lancashire England
they married there in 1874
the last siteing of them was the 1881 census for England, then John appeared on the death certificate of his mother in 1884 and thats it they just dissapeared.

if anyone comes across this family or can help me in any way I would be truly grateful.

Jan, you may have already come in contact with Mavis Bassett, who is searching for the same family, but, just in case you haven't, here is a link to her most recent Genforum post about the charnley's: http://genforum.genealogy.com/charnley/messages/152.html

Hopefully, she's made some progress and you two can compare notes. Good luck.

Jan,
the challenge in finding them in the US will be the lack of census information for 1890, and Rhode Island is one of the states with out any US census information for 1890.

I may be able to check Fall River city directories (1889-1891) later this week, and I will check whether RI did any state census for that time period.

  regards,

Jan, Name is relative uncommon, but no dead hits, I'm afraid.

Between 1884-1891m data base only show 30 Charnley's comming from England and 4 from Great Britain (of course not everybody is transcribed/recorded or they may have entered US via Canada.

Unfortunately, critical 1890 census lost.

Hello,

you may find some information using this site -
http://www.raogk.org/massachu.htm
it is a site for Volunteers that will help with different types of research.

- there is a volunteer that lists that she has books of Fall River

Bristol  Jackie Nadeau  I have 2 great books called FALL RIVER, 1865-1885 AND 1886-1900 ...lots of surnames, will gladly do lookups from these 2 volumes.

If you do decide to use this site you MUST make ONLY ONE request for every 2 weeks - the admin monitors this to make sure no abuses the volunteers time.

here are some  possible clues but what would help is someone who access to the US Census records on Ancestry.com. I don't have a subscription to it but it is a great site. If they ended up in the States they should be able to be tracked down in 1900 federal census.

from the

North Providence, Rhode Island 1877 Tax List - Index
http://distantcousin.com/Directories/RI/NoProvidence/1877/Pages.asp?Pages=05.jpg
there is a Robert Charnley - perhaps a family member who immigrated before John and Jane?

Hi,
I checked the Fall River, MA City directories, 1889-91 and found

 John J. Charnley
 loc: Bourne
 boards 17 Mt Hope Ave
 Fall River

also, did 1890 alternative search which uses mainly city directories  thru states for "John Charnley"

  Lowell, Ma

  had 1889-90 John M. Charnley - house 112 Suffolk

Woonsocket, RI directories 1890-93 - no John Charnley some John Cornells

Newport, Ri - Directories 1887-92 only Mrs. John D. Cornell

Providence, RI - John Cornell or John Cromwells

But Pawtucket RI city directories 1869-1941 had John Charnley listed from 1871-1941 - if you want particulars for this listing just let me know -

and same with Providence and vicinity, RI ,city directories 1818-1964 -

John Charnley from 1912 - 1923 listings - if you want particulars will send scant info though..

probably can't rule out their living somewhere in RI - but lacking a 1890 census...it's hard...

  best,

 drakes

Here is information from RI city directories - specifically Pawtucket & Vicinity & Providence & Vicinity

Pawtucket - 1869-1941 - 8 matches for John Charnley

1871 listed in business directory
 1893 listed in bus. directory

 1924-1929 listed in house directory
1940 - 1941 listed in street directory & directory of householders

Providence - 1828-1964 - 13 matches

1912, 1917, 1919 listed in the city of East Providence
1923 - Providence
 1940, 1941 Providence

1919, 1921, 1923 listed in House directory

if any of the dates look good, I can look at full entry, but I know from experience it is very brief - do you know his occupation?

also, I think (haven't confirmed) that the research center I use has a CD with Rhode Island deaths from 1630-1930 so I could check for Benjamin Charnley, John Charnley & Jane Charnley (or was Jane married?) but, won't be returning to center for about a week & half - I will remember to check if you want...

Also, checked Rhode Island death, 1630-1930.
