Hi
I shall be going to the West Sussex RO again sometime in February
I am happy to do simple Parish Register look-ups from available transcripts or fiche. Please post on this thread with as much info as possible and I will see what I can do.

Hi Jan,
I have a couple in my tree, but I dont know which parents to attach the wife to; This couple was a Rebecca Dancy born about 1806 who married a Thomas Batchelor on 26 Sept 1829 in Wivelsfield Sussex.
I would be interested to find out anything more about the parents of both parties and any marriage witnesses if it is likely they might be mentioned on the records that early.
The Dancy family came from Sussex and had close connections to Wivelsfield so I think there is a chance Rebecca was born there. This couple emigrated to Toronto.
If the records are too early for such information then please disregard this request.
1851: Canada, by or at Saw Mill, which was next to Grist Mill in Hastings County, Canada West (Ontario) in the sub district of Tudor, Elzevir and Madoc.
Thomas Bachelor, by my calculations born abt 1798 England, religion "Friends", occupation Yeoman, aged 54
Rebecca Bachelor, by my calcs born abt 1807 England, religion Baptist, aged 45
Thos Bachelor born by my calcs abt 1829 England, 23, religion Friend (grouped with Lucy by parenthesis), Occupation Yeoman
Lucy Bachelor abt 1831 England, 21, religion Friend (grouped with Thos by parenthesis)
Mary Bachelor born by my calcs abt 1835 Canada, 17
Wm Bachelor born by my calcs abt 1837 Canada, 15
Murtha [Martha] Bachelor born by my calcs abt 1839 Canada, 13
Hannah Bachelor born by my calcs abt 1841 Canada, 11
John Bachelor born by my calcs abt 1846 Canada, 6
neighbours were
Thos J Potter, born by my calcs abt 1803 USA, 47, occupation Yeoman, religion "HM"? (grouped with Sarah Potter)
Sarah Potter, born by my calcs abt 1804, Canada, 46 religion "HM"? (grouped with Thos J Potter)
Benjamin Potter, born in Canada, aged 17
Peter Potter, born Canada, 11
Samuel Potter, born Canada, 7.
Thanks for any help,
Penny

Hi Jan
Me again, hope you don't think I am a pain ;D
Would you mind looking up a baptism for John Lander which should be 1812 in Twineham. He should be born to William Lander and Elizabeth, but so far not managed to find a marriage despite being told it was 1810 in Twineham.
The next three children, Elizabeth, Henry and Mary were all born in Twineham from 1813 and I have their baptisms.
Also could you check Albourne, Sussex 23 November 1781 marriage of William Launder to Ann? There is an extracted record on the IGI with no spouse name, and this marriage is not on the Sussex Marriage Index.
Thank you
Kerry

Hi Penny
According to my list the West Sussex RO don't have Wivelsfield on fiche - however I will check the marriage as they might have added since or there maybe a transcript. Unfortunately if Thomas and Rebecca were non-conformist it will be more difficult to track them down - however they may have been baptised in the local church anyway.
I will see what I can find
Jan ;)

Hi Kerry
I'll check those out for you :D

With regard to the above Lander family would you mind looking for any other Lander children born before 1812 at Twineham particularly William.
I have just found a setlement examination on Sussex Record Society mentioning William and Elizabeth Lander of Twineham born in albourne which fits with mine and there is a child William mentioned. The date is 5 September 1807. This could mean possibly that William and Elizabeth's marriage could be earlier than 1810. They are called Launders on this settlement. The name seems to interchange between Lander/Landers/Launder/Launders ::)
Thank you
Kerry

I'll see what I can find Kerry - fingers crossed for a nice indexed transcript :D

Hi Jan, and thank you for your generous offer!
I'm trying to find a John Delves, thought to be the son of John Delves and his wife May or Mary. He emigrated to Australia in 1839-40, and the purser (?) on his ship marked his birthplace as "Hallenden", which may have been either Hollington or Dallington, mis-heard (once in NSW, he married a Catsfield girl, and I gather both these places are within coo-ee of Catsfield). We think he was born around 1818, as the purser also said he was 21 years old in January of 1840 when the "James Pattison" arrived in NSW.
It's not much to go on, I know ... but any clues you might find would be greatly appreciated :)
Cheers
Deb

Hi Deb
I'm afraid I can't help with this one as both Hollington and Dallington are in East Sussex, so you will need someone who is going to Lewes. If you start a thread I'm sure aid will come your way :D
Jan ;)
See you already have a thread - someone will be going one day.

LOL shows you how much I know about geography, on the other side of the world!
Thanks anyway, Jan ;D

Jan
If you come across any Smiths I would be grateful.
Looking to find out middle names (all help is needed when it comes to Smiths!) of children born to Harry and Emma (nee Hellyer) Smith
1. Edith Agnes? born c1879 Keymer
2. Florence Beatrice? born c1880 Keymer
3. Harry Jesse? born c1885 Fishbourne (is that W. Sussex?)
4. Lydia Isobel? born c1890 Petersfield (think that is Hampshire)
5. Edwin Thomas? born c1894 Ditto
6. Fred ? born c1899 Langrick (can't find out where that is)
7. Lily Frances born c1900 Billinghurst
Many thanks.
Polly :)
-
Hi Polly
I can check Keymer, Fishbourne and Billinghurst for you.
Yes Petersfield is in Hants. Re Langrick - there is a Langrish near Petersfield which could be it.

Hi Janan
Just another quickie from me
I believe Crawley is West Sussex? Would you mind verifying a marriage from the original that I have got from the Sussex Marriage Index. It is at Crawley dated 4 Nov 1827 between Elizabeth Drewit and William Terry.
Now the bit I want verifying is that she is a widow and he is a widower. I query this because they are both 20 - 22 years old. Tragic if it is true and would then confirm that they are mine.
Thank you
Kerry
-
OK Kerry I'll check that for you - very sad if it is true.
Jan

Hi - and thank you for such a prompt and friendly response to my very first posting!
I don't know my Sussex geography too well, so I will list the three Sussex records that I am seeking and hope you will weed out what's not from the 'west'.
Brighton - St Nicholas - Baptism 9.2.1812. George BOOCOCK - father: John Headon Boocock. A cordwainer, serving in the Militia. Mother: Mary (Rennard) Boocock.
Findon - St John the Baptist - Marriage 20.8.1811. Francis BERRINGTON (huntsman/musician/coach bugler)
to Jane STEVENS
Hurstpierpoint - Baptism c 1790. Jane STEVENS. Parents unknown
Once located, is it possible to obtain photocopies of the entries, or would I have to order the films through my local LDS library, in order to make copies here? So far, I have travelled to York and obtained lots of copies from the films at the Borthwick, covering my northern ancestors. I really like to have copies of the original entries
as that confirms, in the best possible way, that my facts are right. I also like seeing the originals - the writing, the name of the officiating minister, etc.
Once again, thanks for your offer of help

Hi Kerry,
In the meantime, I had a look at St John the Baptist in Crawley Marriage Transcript and sure enough this entry is shown:
Marriage 04/11/1827 by Banns;
Groom: William TERRY Condition: W
Bride: Elizabeth DREWITT Condition: W
Witness 1: John Inkpen
Witness 2: Elizabeth Inkpen
No previous marriage for either found in this transcript which covers at least the previous 50 years.
Hope this helps too

Thank you very much Penny, that'll save Janan a job ;D
If Willam and Elizabeth are who I think they are, neither actually came from Crawley so what they were doing there is a mystery. I think both previous marriages are likely to be in Kent as William was from Westerham and if I have the right Elizabeth she was from Edenbridge.
Thanks for your help.
Kerry :)

Hi Kerry
I've crossed that one off :D
Jan ;)
-
Hi angelhaus
I can only do the Findon look-up. Although I will check for Brighton as I know there are some East Sussex transcripts.
Sorry I can't deal with making copies so I guess it would mean ordering the film or contacting the West Sussex RO direct although they seem pretty pricey

I agree it is lovely to see the original especially a marriage where you see signature/marks, quite moving.
Jan ;)
-
Hi Penny
Sorry I was unable to help with your look-up as Wivelsfield turns out to be mostly in East Sussex.

Jan ;)

Thanks Jan
Very useful information there, next stop Hurstpierpoint.
Interesting about that extracted marriage from IGI not being there, I always did think I trusted the SMI more than the IGI ::)
Thanks again, now I've got more research to do :D
Kerry

Hi Kerry
I'll be going again so you can post on next months thread :D
Jan ;)

LOL ;D
The thought did cross my mind ;)
Kerry

Hi angelhaus
I'm afraid my geography went haywire and I thought Hurstpierpoint was East Sussex :-[ Have put Jane Stevens forward for next time I go.
Weirdly the Findon marriage wasn't there. The fiche had one 18 Feb 1811 but the one before it was Nov 1810 - very strange ??? Not so strange really considering you said 20 August ::) ;D OK senior moment copying date from the Brighton marriage - have put that over for next month too.
No transcripts for Brighton I'm afraid.
Sorry for my muddlement
Jan ;)

Hi Jan
Thanks so much for the offer to check these next time around. Really appreciate the help!

Hi, I would love to get in contact with Kerry from this thread. I am researching the same Lander/Launder family as her.....
-
Hi Kate
Welcome to Rootschat :D
Kerry is a regular rootschatter so I'm sure she will reply to you on this thread. If you want to send her a private message (click on the little piece of paper in a circle thing over on the left under her profile pic) you will need to make a couple more posts on the public board. Just reply here twice will be fine.
Jan ;)
-
Thanks for the welcome and advice Jan! I am trying to put together my family tree and I have stumbled across a few threads when 'googling" in relation to the Lander family here on Rootschat.
-
Hi again
If you reply again here you should be able to send a message to kerry. Also you could start a new thread about your Lander family on the general Sussex board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/sussex/
or if you want something specific found out/checked on the Look-up bit
