Title: Devon Regiment/W.H.GLIDDON
Post by: Barrie Green on Saturday 17 January 09 21:37 GMT (UK)
Seeking information on finding W.H. Gliddon, who enlisted apparently in the !st Battalion Regiment in 1893. Served his country well but unable to track him down as a number of W.H. Gliddon's had their births registered in the 1870's. Served in the Punjab; Boer War and W.W.1.

Knowing who his parents were should solve the mystery for me.

Barrie.
Hopefully from  :(        to :)

Thanks Priscilla

It is appreciated you have taken the time to reply to my query.
My instinct suggests he was named William Henry Gliddon. There were six W.H. Gliddons registered in the Birth Index Records over the 1870 - 1890 period these being September 1868, September 1873, September 1878, June 1884, September 1886 and March 1889. Three others with W.H. as initials had other initials tagged on. The W.H. I am seeking had the following Regimental Numbers over the time he was soldering namely 3767 - 15415 - 5415.
The data in my records regarding him was derived from a collection of campaign medals offered for sale a year or so ago.
If I can be steered to the attestation records then I should be able to find something about him.
Gliddons are a line being followed as my great grandfather, Richard Doidge Nosworthy, born 1831, came out here in the 1860s the son of one Rebecca Gliddon who married Richard Doidge Nosworthy in London in 1824, both living at times in  East Stonehouse with my g.g their eldest son coming here followed by a further two brothers, all from East Stonehouse.
Quite a data bank of Gliddons have been assembled and who W.H. was may well fit in.
Any insight into the investigation would be deeply appreciated.

Kindest regards

You would be best placed putting something like this on the Armed Forces board!! ;D ;D ;D ;)

His Attestation sheet can be found in WO97 at Kew, arranged alphabetically by Regt....Both of which you have.

On the back page will be listed his NOK details, and that should give you the answers you need!

These are only available manually and are not on line I'm afraid...

If he married whilst in service, you will also find name and maiden name of bride, and where married.

Thanks for the replies which are deeply appreciated. I thought the answer may be in the directions you folk suggest and will endeavour to find my way out again to Kew when next in London. The Muster Rolls may also shed further light on the subject.
Again thanks for taking the time to assist. We are always in the dark down here while you folk enjoy the light of day!!

Hi Deb

Amazing how this programme works. Quite unbeleivable that there are so many out there to help others. The Medals for W.H. Gliddon have been noted but unfortunately they still do not provide any personal details.
So many thanks for the effort as you folk on top lighten our days down here.

Regards

Barrie Green.

Hello, Please forgive me if i am repeating anything, but i think  the man you are searching for was born in Holsworthy Devon in 1878 June quarter. He served in India, S.Africa and WW1. Medal entitlement  I.G.S. Boer war pair  and WW1 trio. He was severely wounded at ELANDSLAAGTE  S Africa  21/10/1899.  He served in the Devon Regiment.
                 Roy

Google Devon Heritage.  Should be second title on page, click on that and then Devon 2nd Boer War Roll of honour 1899-02  GLIDDON is listed on that

Hi Cheesy (Roy) and Scrimmet,

Trust the snow has gone and things are warming up as this topic of mine starts to develop. Cheesy, acting on your clue towards the possible parents of W.H. the 1881 Census gives a clue or two. With no On-line Parish Clerk a Birth Certificate hopefully for W.H. has been ordered and a Marriage Certificate for his parents. Another week or so may provide the answer for the topic. The Devon Heritage site is great. One is in awe of the folk who take time to delve into the old records to assist those unable to drop into the Exeter Record Office to look at the data they have. The 1891 Census indicates that W.H. with two siblings may well have been an inmate of the Holsworthy Union Workshop being classified as a pauper. Looking back his father Samuel may have died in 1885 and the mother, Elizabeth, in 1887. Will know more in a week or so. Also a pity that there is no current On Line Parish Clerk there as well.
Scrmnet, somehow one would consider the family have long passed the medals on if they were offered for sale a year or so ago. And only time will tell if they related to us downunder.
Again thanks for taking the time to help unravel this part of my possible family.
