Title: Desperate for truth
Post by: aussiepool on Wednesday 21 April 04 03:03 BST (UK)
Hi All,

I am desperately seeking some info for my family. My grandfather is listed on the 1901 census as Alfred Matthews aged 4 of West Derby.
The problem is, I am trying to trace his ancestory. The story goes.....
Matthews is not his real surname. SHARROCK is his real surname, but his parents(?) 'gave him away' to a family named Matthews at the age of about three. They then obviously decided to call him Matthews on the census.
His, and my fathers, birth certificate both state SHARROCK.
We believe that his parents were musical hall/film/theatre performers at the time and Grandad just 'got in the way' of their lifestyle. It could be, that his parent(s) were famous and he was given away because it was out of wedlock. I just don't know....
My grandfather and father have now died (1978, 1999) and no-one knows the real truth.
Does anyone know of Sharrock entertainers/famous of Liverpool in the late 1800's, or of anything of the Matthews family that 'took him in'.
Desperate

I dare say you've already tried, but when I googled  "Sharrock", "Liverpool" I got abt 1660 results. The 3rd on the list was:

http://www.sharrock.com/sharrock.htm

Maybe worth a try contacting them?
