Title: Macgregor - Ardchattan
Post by: rubeaz on Tuesday 03 February 09 13:03 GMT (UK)
I have hit a brick wall in tracing my ancestry. I have obtained death certifcates for my great grandfather Gregor Macgregor born 1850 and died in 1934 and his wife Flora McArthur  died in 1924. Gregor's death certificate states parents John Mcgregor farmer (dec) and Janet Mcgregor (Black).
The information I have accessed through LDS differs from Scotlands People so have found myself totally confused.  ???
I have purchased one John Macgregor death certificate - which states death in 1871 at Birdhouse??? aged 80, but has no other info on it to confirm that this may be the John I am looking for although it does mention son Gregor Mcgregor not present!
The LDS states John born abt 1825 to Christian and Archibald Mcgregor so I have searched again and can't seem to find one that fits the John I may be looking for.
I have only just discovered your wonderful site, so hopefully I won't be too much of a pain!!!! ::)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  :) :-*  Kay (Australia)

I was just looking at that entry Carol - age seems to young for a John McGregor dieing in 1871 aged 80 doesn't it.

Kay, one way of getting some background on Gregor's parents is perhaps to look at the 1855 birth cert. of one of his siblings:

1. ARCHIBALD MCGREGOR  Birth: 01 JUN 1863 Ardchattan, Argyll
2. JOHN MCGREGOR Christening: 18 SEP 1853 Ardchattan, Argyll
3. GREGOR MCGREGOR Birth: 29 SEP 1850 Ardchattan, Argyll
4. SARAH MCGREGOR Birth: 06 OCT 1847 Ardchattan, Argyll
5. MARY MCGREGOR Birth: 10 SEP 1858 Ardchattan, Argyll
6. HUGH MAC GREGOR Birth: 30 DEC 1855 Ardchattan, Argyll

1855 and the first year of official registration in Scotland and BMDS ran over two pages of the register. For births, should include where parents were from and their ages. Also when and where they married, including how many children they'd had (alive or deceased).

Monica  :)

Added: Thinking about it, given the lateness in the year when Hugh was born I wondered whether his birth may not have registered until early Jan 1856 (which means losing out on all that extra info...). Just double checked on Scotlands People, and luckily his birth does look to have been registered in 1855 Ardchattan so looks promising for getting that extra info on the family  :)

1841 census for Kilbrandon and Kilchattan

Gregor McGregor 25 merchant (not farmer??)
Christian McGregor 60
Kilbrandon and Kilchattan; ED: 2; Page:  1

And this 1841 for Lismore - Manse (presumably a vicarage or similar) but it is probably unconnected

Gregor McGregor 42  minister
Catherine McGregor 30
Margaret McGregor 13
The following are shown as servants

Gregor McGregor 20
John Black 15
Niel Campbell 15
Mary McCorquodale 20
Anne McNiven 20
Lismore; ED: 10; Page:  9; Line: 390

I am deleting the above info as I  have stupidly posted info for a Gregor McGregor when we are looking for John McGregor

The 1871 shows no John in the household but there was a son Archibald aged 7 so b around 1863/64 which should narrow down Johns death

John does not reappear on the 1881 census either

There is a possible death for Gregor's mother in Ardchattan where, from Carol's census posts, the family seem to have lived in:

1896 Janet Black/McGregor b. 1822 in Ardchattan, Argyll

Gregor's parents' banns/marriage is showing on the Old Parish Registers on 24 DEC 1846 in Ardchattan.

Also, possible entry for John's birth (which hopefully you will be able to verify through his death cert.):

JOHN MACGREGOR     Birth: 07 SEP 1815/ Christening: 09 SEP 1815 in Ardchattan
Parents:GREGOR MACGREGOR and SARAH STEWART

And possibly for Janet Black:

JANET BLACK  Birth: 20 SEP 1821/ Christening:21 SEP 1821 in Ardchattan
Parents:JOHN BLACK and MARY MACCOLL

Kay

Not sure if you have these, just some things showing up on general google searches:

Gregor [or John] McGregor son John McGrogor Janet Black Kintalen 29th september 1850
www.benderloch.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=967

Someone has trees on this family:

www.chouston.f2s.com/Alltrees/fam29679.htm - John and Janet. Parents showing here for John show as Archibald McGREGOR
and Christian McGREGOR and John born in 1825. Not too sure about this and how it has been verified (as there is no death date for John). From the census information that Carol posted, John looks to have been born nearly 10 yrs before going by his age in 1851/61. The 1815 entry we have found is probably closer but needs verified. The names showing for parents in that 1815 entry also were used by John McGregor and Janet Black early on for their children (if they followed Scottish naming pattern).

:-\ I'm struggling here to find John McGregor's death between 1863-1871. The original image of the 1871 census that Carol found would show Janet Black's marital status to confirm she was widowed. There's no death showing for John in Ardchattan so looks like he may have died elsewhere?

If you are able to verify Gregor and Sarah as parents to John, this looks a possible for them in 1841:

Gregor McGregor 60, farmer
Sarah McGregor 55
Margaret McGregor 20
John McGregor 20
Donald MacColl 7
Alexander MacColl 3
Archd Colquhoun 11

Address: Laitt, Muckairn Argyll

This is a great website for you to follow up on the family

www.benderloch.org.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=68

Though links on the site on www.benderloch.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=611, you can go through to images from the 1871 census at Keil where Janet and children were living at Lower Keil. Janet shows as widow as we expected.

Hi Kay,
I realise that this conversation is about 5 years old, but I've just come across it, so hope that you are still on RootsChat.

So ... Hello Cousin!

My gt grand parents were also Gregor McGregor & Flora McArthur.
I have attached an extract of my tree for that part of the family.

Maybe we can chat further about our "branches", and how they link.
Regards,
Bob

Hi Bob,

My grandfather was Gregor Macgregor who married Elizabeth-Duke Robertson CAMPBELL in Glasgow 1921.
I have a letter (page 2) from Alexander Macgregor he wrote to Flora just before he died in France. Not too sure if I am allowed to put my email address to this post but will try. I will then send you the copy.
My mother was Flora McArthur Macgregor who was born in Glasgow 1928 and married my dad an American during WW2. They migrated to Texas USA where I was born.
My Macgregor grandparents migrated to Australia from Glasgow 1955 and we migrated from USA 1957 and this is my home.
My email is kay_csps@yahoo.com.au - hope to hear from you soon - Cheers Kay. PS if my email is deleted send me a Private Message via Rootschat.   Also, when I was a child I met a Mrs Semple who was in Australia (probably a relative of yours!) I remember she had a throat operation.
