Title: McLucas - Kilfinichen/Kilvickeon Brickwall!
Post by: lindagro on Thursday 05 February 09 11:46 GMT (UK)
I wonder if anyone can help please?

I am researching my husbands 2xgr grandfather Hugh McLucas , born c 1836.
I have his marriage cert for 1866 showing his age 30yr, his parents as John McLucas (a farmer, deceased) and Christian McIntyre (deceased).

I have found a marriage for John & Christian 29/1/1831 Torosay parish, Kilfinichen/Kilvickeon.   The grooms name seems to read John McLucais Gribun,( - does anyone know what the Gribun means or is for? )  I have found a John/Christian McLucais on 1841/51 in Kilfinichen/Kilvickeon but no mention of Hugh in the family.

I can't find Hugh's birth record, and I can't pick him up on any census until 1881 -   ships carpenter, born Taron Argyll. living in Partick.   On the
1891 - still a ships carpenter in Partick born Argyll, and on 1901 - ships smith in Partick born Kelquiche Argyll.

If anyone can throw any light on this for me I would be very grateful. :D

Hi Linda

Not an easy one this one as you have found  :-\

Can't quite get my head round it but some notes from me to add to your pile!

1. I think the John McLucas and Christina you are seeing in 1841/51 may well be another family. There are submitted entries on IGI at www.familysearch.org which have this Christina as a Cameron not McIntyre which would explain why you are not seeing a son Hugh with them.

2. Are you working off Ancestry's transcription for Hugh's birth place in 1881-1901? Might be worthwhile to look at the original images to be more certain of his birth place.

3. The OPRs at Scotlands People show the following. To parent John MCLUGASH and Christian MCINTYRE:

1   01/09/1834   HUGH MCLUGASH - Kilchoman Argyll
2   05/05/1843   SARAH MCLUGASH - Kilchoman Argyll

Monica

Added:  :-\ Not sure if the McLugash entries are relevant now. There is a death of a Christina McIntyre/McGulash in 1888 Argyll. Widow to a John, farmer. However, Hugh showed mother as deceased in 1866 so now wondering if my supposition of name variations (McLucas/McLugash) is incorrect in this case)

Thanks for your help Monica.  I used Scotlands People for the census information about Hugh, and have also tried various spellings of McLucas.

Someone did suggest that the family might be called McDougall as that was often used for McLucas ( I can't quite get my head round that!) . But trying that didn't didn't help!

Anyway thanks again, will keep trying.

Linda

Just seen that Gribun (after John's name on the OPR marriage entry) is actually a place name in the Isle of Mull  :)

Likelyhood that it was John's birth place so the entry would be written up as John from Gribun.

I did find one other possible entry for Hugh in 1841 last night, let me go and try and find it again.

This is the one:

Hugh McIntyre 66, shepherd
Donald McIntyre 32
John McIntyre 25
Marg McIntyre 22
Christian McIntyre 15
Hugh Lueras 6
Neil McLucas 4

Address: Glemanol, Salen Argyll

With a submitted entry on IGI:

Hugh McLucas  Birth About 1835 Of Salen,Glencanol, Isle Of Mull, Argyll, Scotland

I did wonder whether maybe parents had died and he was taken care of by maternal grandfather?

The OPR records for Salen don't seem to start until the 1820s looking at the IGI batch codes for Salen.

That looks promising, will look for that and go from there.  It does seem possible they were looked after by Grandparents, although I haven't yet found deaths for John & Christian.  I have been a bit blinkered in not looking for other areas in Argyll where Hugh might have been.

:D We are on the right trail Linda with the Salen family I think.

Neil McIntyre married in Glasgow in 1865, a Lillias (lilly) Hannah McDonald.  A blacksmith by trade age 28, therefore close to age in that 1841 census entry we now have.

Parents John McLucas, farmer, and Christina McIntyre, both deceased.

This is Neil in 1871 with new family - as transcribed not my spelling  ::)

Neel McLucas 34, Clacksmalk (blacksmith I assume!), b. Kilfonechan, Argyshire
Litty Hannah McLucas 33, Blacksmith Wife, b. Bonaw (?), Argyshire
Hugh McIntyre McLucas 5, b. Glasgow
Christina McLucas 3, b. Ardchattan,
Mary Ann McLucas 10 Months b. Ardchattan,

Address: Smithy, Ardchattan, Argyll

At a guess, first born son called after maternal grandfather perhaps.

Monica you're a star !    I think you have cracked it!    Neil certainly seems to be the brother of Hugh going by place of birth & parents.

Hugh also had sons Hugh, John & Neil and daughters Christina & Mary -  keeping the family names link.

Can't thank you enough, I've been trying to work this out for a couple of weeks

Hi Linda,

I have Elizabeth McKenzie marrying Hugh McIntyre McLucas on 29th December, 1892 at Kiel, Benderloch, Ardchattan.  The parents of Hugh are Niel McLucas and Hannah McDonald.

The family of Elizabeth and Hugh McLucas are:

Hugh
Kenneth McKenzie McLucas
Neil McLucas
Mary
John
Malcolm
Christine
Elizabeth

Kenneth McKenzie McLucas enlisted with the Canadian Infantry during WW1 and died on 20th June, 1916.  Also Malcolm McLucas enlisted with the Canadian Infantry and died on 15th November, 1916.  His wife was Grace P McLucas of Brandon, Manitoba.

The McLucas family were blacksmiths in Benderloch, Ardchattan.

I am related through Elizabeth McKenzie.

kind regards,

I have a photograph of the War Grave of Malcolm McLucas. It is Rutherglen Cemetery, Lanarkshire. I was contacted by a relative of his who told me he died on a hospital ship on his way back from the Front and was to be buried at Invergordon where the vessel docked. A female relative, I cannot recall if it was wife, mother or grandmother travelled to Invergordon and refused to allow the burial there but demanded he be buried in Rutherglen where she stayed.

Hi there Mary Penning,

is this conversation still doing? My grandmother was Jane McKenzie and was related to the McLucas family in Benderloch.  I remember going to the McLucas home - Keil crofts when i was a young boy with my dad. I am also a distant relative of Elizabeth Aitken!

Regards
Thomas

Hi,   I am so sorry for not replying to your message until now.  I am related to the McLucas family through Elizabeth McKenzie who married Hugh McLucas.  There are still descendents living in Benderloch, Argyllshire, Scotland.  If there is any other information you require, please let me know and again apologies for the late reply.    kindest regards in your research.
