Can anyone tell me how do I get lettering to stand out on a headstone.
I took a photo of one in Auckland, NZ at Mangere cemetery when I was there and now am unable to read it.
This is a photo of my stepmother's sister's headstone.
Any ideas please
Thank you Newbe

Oh dear, that looks very much like the test patterns they had me looking at yesterday at the optometrists.
There may be someone here who can work with filters and screens etc, to bring up a bit of the wording.
I wish you luck.
To get a photo that's readable you need to stand at an angle from the headstone, preferable in early morning or late afternoon.
Not that this will help you now, but if you are in a position to photograph a headstone another time.
There are a few tricks to photographing headstones, several are destructive and most are frowned on. But the angle of light and shadow are the greatest help.

newbe,
When about was the headstone erected? or when did the woman die?
the reason I ask is that the cemetery may have a record of the stone mason who did the carving and asking him may give you the inscription...
just a thought...

it would have ben erected some time in 1969.
Myrtle died 23 May 1969. I have been advised it would cost $300.00 NZ dollars to have the lettering redone so that it can be read.

PS: Thanks for all your help so far

i know its silly ...to ask... but you dont happen to remember the 'gist' of what is written do you...??
I imagine something in there says........ 'beloved...?? daughter / wife if you can tell me what is written
then I can re- inscribe it for 'nada' xxxxxxxx

Sorry but I have no idea.
I have put up a new thread on the NZ Board to see if someone can take another photo or write down what the inscription says so that may help.
Will let you know when I find out.

Thanks KHP.
I now wonder who the stone mason was?
It looks like the headstone will have to be redone.
Will have to check with family first

Newbe,
Maybe I should be with you next time you take photos ;D
Mangere cemetery should/might have it on their records, worth a try contacting them.
Stonemasons are usually connected to the Funeral Directors. Well, ours is.
Cheers
