Title: Please Help
Post by: sarah j p on Friday 06 February 09 20:13 GMT (UK)
Still looking for any info regarding the Knott family from Bolton. I am very new to family research and computers so please bare with me! I am trying to find out information about my Great grandfather- Henry James Gatfield. All I know about him is that he came to the Bolton area of England, from Australia, during the 1st World War.

Henry married a Gertrude Knott and had 4 children.
1) son born 1918.
2) daughter born 1922.
3) daughter born 1926.
4) daughter (no other information known)

The children were born in Bolton.

Henry spent time in prison. For what, when or where I do not know but would dearly love to find out.

The only thing is that I just do not know where to begin. Any ideas or suggestions would be gratefully received. I hope that I have posted this in the correct place too!!!

Hello !

Welcome to RootsChat !   I hope you'll get the help you need ... how about checking the Lancashire boards ...

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,21.0.html

... where you may find resources that help.   It might be adviseable to put your query on the correct county board ... and there is also an Australia section, and a WW1 board to, which might help with info about Henry Gatfield ...

Do you belong to Ancestry or any of the genealogy sites ?  Lots of RC members do, and can help you look stuff up ... and there are many, many free online sites ...

A moderator should be able to move this whole thread to an appropriate board - Australia or Lancashire or whichever Sarah prefers.

freebmd.rootsweb.com has the names of a son and three daughters born in Bolton between 1918 and 1929, but no marriage!
The youngest daughter, Joan, b. 1929 died in 1931 (http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/)

The marriage is also shown on the Lancashire bmd site, Henry J Gatfield m. Gertrude Knott, Bolton, Victoria Wesleyan Chapel, Grecian Street, registers at Bolton.
This seems to somehow have not found its way onto the freebmd index, but it is there. Try going directly to the local office:
Address and phone numbers can be seen here (http://www.bolton.gov.uk/portal/page?_pageid=367,129290&_dad=portal92&_schema=PORTAL92)

Hi There,
Gertrude Knott was my Grandfathers sister, and i am amazed to find someone else researching our family history. My grandfather was Frederick Knott and i have been researching the family for 15 years on and off and never come across anyone else with similar interests.
I know you posted your enquiry some time ago, but on the off chance you might log in one day i thought i would respond to your request.

All the best

Hello and welcome to Rootschat Knottingham!

Everyone who has posted on this thread in the past will receive a notification in their email inbox (providing they haven't changed email accounts).  Hopefully the people who have posted here before will see your post quite soon  :)

I too have done a little research on some of the Knott family based in Reading but the details are on another computer.

Good luck with your research and I hope you get some helpful responses :)
