I am descended from Richard Shaw, farmer of Coppull, via his son Alexander Shaw who moved to Manchester where he married Jane Booth (from Stockport). They had two children: Mary Ann and William Henry. William Henry was a sawyer in the Bradford area of Manchester, whose children with Ann Jackson included: Ann, Alexander, Mary, William H, Thomas J, Robert, Richard, and Charles, and with Elizabeth Parry Gibbons: Sam
Richard married Nanny Berry of Coppull and their children included: John, Betty, Mary, Margaret, Eliza, Thomas, Anne, Richard, James, Caroline, Joseph, Alexander (as above), and Edward. Richard was a tenant farmer in variously Coppull, Heath Charnock, Adlington, Anglezark, Coppull (again), and Fleet St, Horwich before retiring around 75 years old to be a grocer in Standish.
Richard was actually born in 1784 in Chorley, the son of John Shaw, blacksmith, and Elisabeth/Betty Bamford whose older children were John and Thomas, born in Langtree, Standish. John Shaw is most likely the son of Thomas Shaw (and Isabel), who is descended from Alexanders, Thomas' and Johns who were blacksmiths in Coppull and Langtree/ Standish.

Hi Fiona
My partner is descended from William Shaw, b. 1854, and I have just today traced back a couple of generations to Richard. Just did a Google search and very excited to have found this post!
Would love to exchange information.

hi fiona...
i too am derived from thomas and isabella shaw (via their last child - alexander).
pre thomas and isabel (la) though it does get rather confusing. finding online a will for john shaw (married to anne) blacksmith of coppull died 1670. there are several roots or possible roots to thomas (and isabel).
thomas's parents were probably alexander and jane (no marriage found). there are 2 alexanders who this could be... both possibly derived from john 1670.
john 1670 had two sons in his will, alexander and john (the younger son) . that alexander could be the one who married 'ellen' c 1658, who had a son thomas (b 1663) who married grace duxbury (1686) who had a son alexander b1686 who could be the alexander who married jane.
alexander and ellen had a son john too 1659, who could be the one who married elizabeth finch who had a son alexander1683 who could be the alexander who married jane.
of course its also possible that john 1670's son john, was the john who married elizabeth finch and had the son alexander 1683.
hope that makes sense! if you have any info on the shaw alex/thomas/john blacksmiths then id be very grateful. cheers.
