Post by: genius on Monday 09 February 09 01:32 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for any information, dates etc on Alexander Sinclair who was married to Emilia Young they had son (Alexander) on 13th january 1856
registered at Forse, Latheron .

I'm new to this and any help would be greatly appreciated, trying to go as far back on fathers line as possible.

From the IGI at www.familysearch.org

ALEXANDER SINCLAIR   Spouse:  AMELIA YOUNG
Marriage:  08 APR 1853   Latheron, Caithness

If you do a parent search on the IGI (see below) you will find the births/baptisms of the children

PARENT SEARCH ON IGI

www.familysearch.org - On home page - click on  “Advanced Search” to the right of the SEARCH button

Select “International Genealogical Index” from the left hand menu

Input fathers name and surname BUT only put mothers christian name as not all entries have the maiden name (except in Scotland)

REGION – select British Isles from the menu

COUNTRY – select one or “All countries”

COUNTY (will appear when you select COUNTRY)  – select whichever matches what you know about the family

Click SEARCH

Helen is 12 in 1861 but Alexander and Amelia only married in 1853

In 1851 there is a 3 yr old Helen Sinclair b Latheron with grandmother Helen Sinclair aged 74 but there are quite a lot of other Sinclairs in the same household - not Alexander

Either Alexander was married previously or she is Amelia's daughter

In 1851 Amelia is shown as aged 20 b Latheron &  is visiting the Cambell family in Wick.  Also in the household is a Donald Sutherland aged 71 lodger

No Helen shown

I wonder if this could be his first marriage - both are submitted records which is an indication that somebody else is researching the same family - however - submitted records are not always reliable as can be seen by the 2 different venues for the marriage

ALEXANDER SINCLAIR   Spouse:  ELIZABETH SUTHERLAND     Marriage:  25 OCT 1849   Wick, Caithness, Scotland

ALEXANDER SINCLAIR    Spouse:  ELIZABETH SUTHERLAND    Marriage:  25 OCT 1849   Latheron, Caithness

hi , welcome to rootschat  :)

some info. that perhaps you don't have -
scotlandspeople has
amelia sinclair(other surname young) died 1907 latheron caithness
born c1826
as usual IGI has 2 possible matches for an emelia young
baptised 5th november 1825 latheron caithness father robert young
baptised 6th december 1826 latheron caithness father alexr. young

given the names of children alexr. father might be the right one

SP also has 2 possible deaths for alexander sinclair between 1891 and 1920
born 1820 + - 5 years latheron caithness
one is 1894 born c1822
other is 1910 born c1819
someone with access to the 1901 census may be able to confirm if your
alexander is still alive then if so then the second one looks more likely

IGI has 3 possible matches for alexander sinclair latheron caithness
baptised 3rd feb. 1819 father donald sinclair
baptised 9th aug. 1819 father george sinclair(submitted entry)
baptised 3rd june 1822 father john sinclair

if you don't already have it then amelia's death cert. would seem a good
starting point

A very big thank you to Carol and ev for the work you put in, I am certainly a lot further forward than I expected and you were both so quick to reply...what a great site this is! As I'm new to this it's taking me a wee while to absorb this info. I will get back to you with more questions when I figure out what I'm doing
The 1861 cencus seems quite accurate As Alexander Sinclair & Amelia's son' Alexander' (my grt grandfather )was definitely 5 yrs old then and in 1881 he was 25yrs old which again is spot on, did they tend to guess ages in the early censuses? as they do not seem to be very accurate. If any kind person could check the 1871 & 1891 censuses for any info on the family I would be most grateful. Alexander and amelia wer living in 'shore road', I believe.
Again a big thank you to everyone who's helping me......W
