Hi Chris,
thanks for that,no one has been back to me on the Illman family only you!
I now think they moved from Worth after Josiah was born ? Burstow Surrey,London or Strood in Kent.
I know they lived in Strood after Josiah married and Sarah was born Frindsbury near Strood(by the way thats were I was born!)
I would like to find if Josiah had any brothers or sisters and where the family was between 1820 and 1843.
When you go to the record office in Lewis next week could you try if you have time please look to see if they were living in Sussex in the 1841 census.
            Thanks Jean in Perth Australia.

There were Illmans in my year at Imberhorne school, East Grinstead (1975-1982).
Can't remember where they lived, but it was either Worth, Turners Hill, Crawley Down or Copthorne - so you still had rellies living in the area at least until the.
Cheers

Hi Eilleen and Dave.
I think he may be conected to the Illman family from the Sussex/Surrey boarder. Its an uncommon surname and I think they came first from that area.

I have had a good look at my tree, but sorry to say again he is not mine.I just hope someone claims him.I would love to find more pics of my family.

          Regards Jean.

Post by: Dave Francis on Saturday 11 August 07 09:12 BST (UK)
Hi again Jean.

I think you're right. The William Illman I found was the son of Henry and Louisa Illman. Henry Illman, a gardener, was born about 1845 in Reigate, Surrey. In 1891 the family were at the same address - 3 Belmont Grove, Chiswick. [RG 12/1034 folio 26 page 15]

Going back even further, Henry appears to have been the son of James and Ann Illman. In 1851 he was living with his parents in Reigate. James Illman, a blacksmith, was born about 1813 in Chipstead, Surrey. [HO 107/1599/1 folio 205 page 34]

So the William Illman in the picture seems to have been James's grandson.

Hi Eilleen.

Maybe you are right!

Not sure who is on the photo. One must be my greatgrandfather Richard Illman and maybe the one on the right is William Rolfe Illman born 1870 Strood Kent, his son.
I knew my greatuncle Will he lived well into his 90's!

He could have been on a trip to London and had his pic taken?

I thought it would be nice to receive William  unannounced, :)
he certainly had a faster journey than some of his name sake's did,
I posted him  on Friday 8th Feb early afternoon.
I know in the past , people who do not know me , have gone out of their way to help me in my family search, rootschat folk are a good example of this, their kindness is something I really am thankful for .
I am just chuffed that I found a home for William.

reply from Penny - researching Illman (Thomas who married Lydia Dancy 7 Nov 1809 Worth, Sussex)
Richard Illman who was registered to vote in Worth, Sussex in 1832, did vote in Worth Sussex in 1832 - Source East Sussex List of the Registered for 1832 Poll. (And a Thomas Illman voted in Ditchling if anybody is interested!).
My Lydia Dancy married a Thomas Illman and in 1841 she was found surrounded by countless relatives nearby the Crown Inn, Turners Hill, Worth  Sussex

Hi Penny.

Thankyou for the info.

I think your Thomas maybe my Richard's brother.I have a Thomas born 1785 who was Richard's brother sons of William and Sarah Illman.

My Richard remarried Strood Kent 1835 and I have found both Richard and Josiah living in Kent in the 1841 census.

So if it was my Richard who voted in 1832 he moved to Kent between 1832 and 1835.

I am now looking for his first wife's Mary death and if there were any more children from their marriage,I have yet to find Josiah's baptism.

       Kind regards Jean.

Jean

I checked my transcripts of burials for Crawley, West Grinstead and Bolney and could not find any burials for his first wife Mary before for in 1835.

Your Richard and my Thomas could possibly be brothers.  (I have not come across any conclusive proof though).  Unable to find my Thomas in 1841 and thereafter.  Have not found a death or burial for Thomas.

Plod on...

Hi Jean

I came across this site and your quest whilst googling myself!  As an Illman living in Sussex I was wondering how your search was going?  I am a photographer so I'm fascinated to see the images of old Illmans.  Would love to know the story.

Many thanks

I know this thread is quite old, so I don't know if any of you will see this but I really hope you will.
My name is Kerry Illman. I am looking into my family history so I'm so glad I found this site. I saw this thread and just had to join.
My surname comes from my mother's side of the family. Her name is Susan Illman, her father was Gordon Illman, he was born in Surrey in 1935. His mother was Elizabeth/Elsie Illman, but she died when my granddad was young from complications with an abortion and so my granddad was taken into care, this is why we don't know much about his side. I've been told that his foster mother always told him his real father's name was Charles Richardson, but the name Illman came from his mother's side and her parents were William Illman and Edith Illman previously Garford.
I know Elizabeth/Elsie had two brothers and one sister, their names are/were Alf, Bill and Grace. Alf has two sons that I know of, they are called Alan and David Illman. Gordon Illman married June Stockwell, and they had three children, Linda, Sue and Colin, Sue went on to have me. And here I am :) If you think this is relevant to your family please get in touch. I'd love to learn about you all.

Best wishes,
Kerry xx

Hi Kerry,

Welcome to Rootschat. :)   I had a look for an Edith Garford marriage to William Illman and this is it;

Marriages; Edith Honour Garford to William Illman.  Year 1910, quarter Jan-Feb-March, district Croydon [county of Surrey], volume 2a, page 569 for Edith and page 569 for William.  (William has been misindexed on Ancestry as being on page 568 but on the original it says page 569).

If you do get the marriage certificate where you will be able to find out the names of their fathers then let us know how you get on.

Penny

And, I saw the photograph on this thread of William Illman and I showed it to my mum and the signiture amazed her as she has the exact same handwriting. She writes Illman the exact same way and we told my Nan and she says she reckons it's my great, great, grandfather. He and Edith went on to have Elizabeth, who had my Grandfather Gordon Illman, and so on.

As far as I know William was always known as "William Walter Illman" I think Walter was his middle name. This is amazing! :)

I note that you are still active on this chatter, but I am harking back to 2005!
My direct line is stymied at Thomas Illman, born ca. 1698 in West Grinstead.
I have downloaded all the Illmans in WG I can, but still cannot get any further back.
Next I suppose I need to start checking nearby villages to see if he moved in from the surrounding area. There is a Thomas Illman of Steyning which is very close who married an Elizabeth of WG at around this time, but have not been able to get back to any search locations to try again - I live in Muscat, Oman so am a little constrained in this respect.
There is a Walter Illman and family in WG records going back into the 1600s but have not been able to detect any links yet.
Any suggestions or observations would be very welcome.
Best wishes - Chris Hillman

Jean - you are more than welcome to take part! I have a lot of information, but not very organised as yet. My approach is trying to ascertain the origin(s) of the name and evolution from Hylman, Illman, ad Montem, Uppehill and Attehill (see the Goons website and my study brief there - http://www.one-name.org/profiles/hillman.html ). Let me know if this is still of interest? Best wishes - Chris

Hi Chris.
Yes I would like to join in.
My Grandmother was Lena Elizabeth Illman born 1883 Strood Kent.
Her family moved to Kent between 1832 and 1835 from Worth/Burstow on the boarders of Surrey/Sussex.
Lena was my father's mother and they were gardeners as my father is still at 93.

Jean - not sure how best to go about this?! All my own family line data is in Brother's Keeper software, all my Illman/Hillman data is in Custodian 3. Objectives - to understand better the origins and distribution of the Illman/Hillman family name worldwide. How do you see your own interests fitting in with this? Currently I am engaged in trying to push back my Illman line in the West Grinstead area through focussing first on WG, then surrounding villages. However, at a distance this is not easy and getting beyond good published records on BMD. Another aspect is looking at the varied occurrences of the family name variants pre 1700. Again, this is older historical literature and lots of "paperwork"! Best wishes - Chris

I am one-eighth Illman, my great-grandmother was Laura Ada Illman.
You can trace some Worth-based Illmans back from her on this page:of my site:
http://haywain.net/family/tree.php?ID=16
Most of the Illman data on the site is based on the work of
W. John Illman of Canada (my half second cousin) and I do
not personally have evidence for material prior to Laura's grandfather George.

I am seeking information about Harry Ernest Illman 1881-1963. He left Strood in Kent in 1912 and moved to America.  In 1914 he met and married ex-Strood resident Emily Alice Goldsmith, born 1880 in Milton Regis, Sittingbourne.

I am in touch with Jean Harris in Perth.

Grateful any family help, photographs please as I am writing a feature for Bygone Kent Magazine.

Thank you
