Title: MITCHELL - St Peter Port
Post by: Just Kia on Wednesday 11 February 09 18:07 GMT (UK)
This is my husband's brother-in-law's direct line.
(related post - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=341914)
So far I have:
Charles MITCHELL (c1820 St Peter Port, Guernsey) married Sarah Jane BULLOCK c1845 in St Peter Port, Guernsey.
Their children were:
Charles Henry MITCHELL 16 Apr 1846 St Peter Port, Guernsey
Alice Louisa MITCHELL 09 Aug 1866 St Peter Port, Guernsey
Edith Sophia Mary MITCHELL 06 May 1872 St Peter Port, Guernsey - 05 Aug 1877 St Peter Port, Guernsey
Presumably there were more children in this time frame - I just haven't found them as yet.
From Debbie's post the missing children were:
George 1849; William 1859; Eva Jane 1862; Thomas A 1869; Emmalina 1870; Edna Sophia 1872.

Charles Henry MITCHELL then married Charlotte MARSH c1867 in St Peter Port, Guernsey.
Their children were:
Emmaline Charlotte Ann MITCHELL 25 Sep 1868 St Peter Port - 30 Apr 1945 Dover, Kent
Also Elizabeth, William, Henry and James although I do not have dates for them.

Emmaline MITCHELL then married Benjamin Ford Richard BROWN (20 Jul 1875 Dover, Kent) Q1 1900 in Dover, Kent
Their children were:
Queenie Dorthea BROWN 13 Apr 1901 Dover, Kent
Bert Alison BROWN 09 Sep 1902 Dover, Kent - He was the grandfather of hubby's BiL.

I'm interested in filling the gaps in the MITCHELL family if possible.

Interestingly I can't find Charles MITCHELL snr on the 1841 census in St Peter Port, but have found 12 year old Sarah BULLOCK in District 16, Folio 6, Page 5.
With parents of Robert and Sophia which matches up with Debbie's post.

Great thank you very much
I've just found the links for Channel Island censuses on Ancestry - I didn't realise they were there and had only seen the transcription of 1841 linked at the top of this board.

Do you happen to know where births would have been registered, or even if they had to be registered?

This is very exciting!   I am going to print all of your posts so far and see what I have to add.  In the meanwhile, attached is a GEDcom for this family.   I cut off the GEDcom to protect living individuals.  However, if you look at the tree, Eva Jane Mitchell married Jean William Mauger.  They had 12 children, most of whom migrated to Wisconsin USA.  I am descended from that line, and have quite a bit of information for them.

I also have a lot of descendant information for descendants of Robert Bullock and Sophia Jane Bailey.  Please email privately for details on those, as a lot of that info goes to recent times.

How fun to discover new relations!

Debbie

OK well, I've found the family on the censuses but I'm confused with the children.
So far I've got:
From the 1851 Census HO107/2530/F148/P5
Charles H - 1846
George W - 1849

From the 1861 Census RG9/ 4379/F24/P19
George W - 1849
Clara T - 1853
Excelina E - 1856
William J - 1859

From the 1871 Census RG10/5765/F123/P17
George W - 1848
Everlina - 1856 (presumably Excelina E?)
William J - 1859
Ewa Jane - 1862 (Eva?)
Emelina C - 1864
Alice S - 1866
Thomas A - 1869

From the 1881 Census RG11/5625/F5/P4
George W - 1849 (wonder why he's still at home?)
William G - 1859
Thomas A - 1869
Emmalina  - 1869 (Is she a twin to Thomas? Is she Emelina? If so how did she lose 5 years?)

I wonder if the 1881 Emmalina b 1869 is actually the same as the 1871 Emmalina  b 1864?  It could very easily be transcribed incorrectly or recorded badly by the census taker.

Otherwise, the first Emmalina could have passed away.  My records had an Emmalina born in 1870 (a year later than Thomas).  Maybe she is a second Emmalina who wasn't born yet when they actually polled the family for the census in 1871.

I wonder if George came home to take care of the little ones in 1881, as his parents would have been older with little kids.  Or maybe he was just there when the censustaker came around.

Based on all the info (your original, mine, and the census), this is what I have so far:

Charles H - 1846
George H - 1848   First shows up in 1871 census, so probably really is George W.
George W - 1849
Clara T - 1853   Gone by 1871 Census - either died or married or moved out
Excelina E - 1856
William J - 1859
Eva Jane - 1862
Emelina C - 1864
Alice S - 1866
Thomas A - 1869
Emmalina  - 1870

And I forgot Edna Sophia Mary Mitchell born in 1872

Two more thoughts -
Our second Emmalina b 1869 could also possibly be the same as Edna Sophia Mary b. 1872 (and the dates for both are wrong).

Secondly, for my GEDcom posted above, I do not have a lot of references listed in the GEDcom or the notes.  HOWEVER, I do have solid documentation for this family line - for Mitchell, Bullock and Mauger.

Most of it came through the Priaulx Library, but I also have quite a bit of other documentation.  Please email for specific references.  My apologies for not having good references with the GEDcom - it is on my to-do list.

I am looking for the Mitchell St. Peter who lived in Oconto, Wisconsin, USA and is listed there in the 1880 US Census.  He lived next door to my Great Grandmother nee Alice Wheeler in 1866.  Someone unknown got her pregnant in 1879 and she gave birth to my grandfather May 1880.  Could the Alice you list here born in 1866 be the same Alice.  Mitchell St Peter was then 23.  Subsequently he disappeared (that is, I don't find him in the 1885 Wisconsin Census, nor in subsequent Censuses in Wisconsin and Michigan.  Family records say Alice "grew to womanhood" in Michigan."

My grandfather was Gerald John Mitchell son of John Mitchell and Frances Mitchell. I am having a lot of difficulty locating any information about them. Do you have any suggestions? He was born around 1889 in St Peters Port.
