Title: A small complaint - smilies
Post by: Erato on Thursday 12 February 09 14:45 GMT (UK)
It seems that RootsChat automatically inserts smilies in certain situations.  I have had this happen to me on a number of occasions.  Here is the most recent example of a post in which I did not insert the smiley:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,360293.msg2369921.html#msg2369921

The above example is trivial.  However, I do object to the automatic insertion of smilies because I have had it happen in situations where the insertion did not accurately reflect my state of mind.  If I wanted to use them, I am perfectly capable of doing so but, as it happens, I don’t like them.  I do not see what is gained by having the RC software [and I suppose it is the software, not a moderator] do this.  People who want to use smilies are free to do so [and many use them wholesale].  I think that those who wish not to use them should not have their wishes overridden by RC.

I'm sorry to hear that you don't feel like smiling!  ;)

Rootschat uses proprietary software and it has not been modified to prevent the characters which are the html for smilies to be overridden.

I trust you can live with what you've said yourself is a trivial inconvenience and that it won't prevent you from enjoying the best FREE genealogy website on the net.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

p.s. the very idea that any Moderator has the time or the inclination to go around impishly adding smilies to your posts just to annoy you makes me LOL!

The smileys are made up of various punctuations  ??? is (???) maybe you are adding punctuation that is being changed.
?  ??  ???

I cant post three question marks even in brackets - it still comes out as  ???

best wishes
Mike

Was just going to add if you put 3 question marks up it turns it into the "Huh" smiley.

I didn't suggest that moderators did it to annoy me - I assumed it was the software.

I can live with it if RC is unable or unwilling to modify the software. But, as I said, it hasn't always been trivial.  What character combinations should I be careful with besides 3 consecutive question marks?

You can always check that you haven't inadvertently added something you don't want by using the preview button before you post.

To be pedantic about it, why do you need three questions marks after your question or query? be sensible about it and post one, then the problem doesn't arise.

Well, in the particular example given above, each '?' represented a character.  I'm sorry, but I don't have time to go back through old posts to search out other examples.

To answer you question, you could look at the Rootschat Help pages, helpfully organised by Berlin-Bob, specifically here:

Any further issues - just ask

For general information:

Almost all forum, bulletin board and chatroom software converts certain combinations of text characters into graphic smileys.  Usually they use combinations that don't generally appear in printed  texts and nobody notices.

But sometimes you do notice  :o
The most common "how did that get there ?" occurrence is the three question marks, the cause of this topic.

... and the second most common occurrence (also the cause of a RootsChat topic) is this one:

If you write a numbered list of things, you will be OK if you have seven or less items in your list.
1) Item 1
2) Item 2
:
to
:
7) Item 7
..... so far, so good - no problems, but when you then type 8 and ) you get
8) Item 8   :o

If it is trivial, then just type 8, then a space, and then the bracket:
8 ) Item 8  :)

Or....
Quote
But, as I said, it hasn't always been trivial.
Should you ever be in this position, then click on the link supplied by Arranroots, and scroll down the page a bit.

You will see that there is an option [ x ] Don't use smileys
This applies only to individual replies; it is not a global option for all messages.

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hi Erato,

Smileys/emoticons are, of course, far from always about "smiling".

Even the RootsChat smileys include angry, sad, crying etc.

Other smileys available on the Web cover a vast range of smileys which are definitely not "smiling".

For example  <a href="http://www.freesmileys.org" title="Free Smiley Face courtesy of www.FreeSmileys.org"><img src="http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-angry016.gif" alt="Free Smiley Face Courtesy of www.FreeSmileys.org" border="0" /></a>

However, here's another way to avoid the "Huh" smiley which, on RC, results from 3 question marks.

Don't leave a space before the 3 question marks and see what happens.

Thus ...

Can one avoid the "Huh" smiley by not leaving a space???

Yes, so it seems!

I think Jap's red smiley is definitely one for a frustrated genealogist!

Thanks, JAP, but I think I'll pass.  I just don't like the things.  I will try to avoid having them pop up in my posts and if I slip up, I'll edit them out if I think that they convey something I didn't mean

Hi again Erato,

The first part of my post related to:
Quote from: Arranroots
I'm sorry to hear that you don't feel like smiling! ...
I just mentioned in passsing that emoticons are far from always about "smiling".

The second part of my post was the important part and was the reason why I posted at all.
Namely to let you (and others who don't like the 'Huh' emoticon) know that we can avoid it by not inserting a space in front of three question marks.

Cheers,

JAP

A smile says a thousands words.
It warms the heart and soul.

A hug and kiss can do the same thing.

These appear to be the character sequences ito beware of. If you use [Preview] you'll see straightaway if you've inadvertantly added a smiley, and the solution is usually just to add a space between the characters.

If you type the characters before the equals sign WITHOUT SPACES BETWEEN THEM then a smiley is automatically inserted:

: )     =  :)
; )     =  ;)
: D    =  :D
> : (    =   >:(
: (     =  :(
: o     =  :o
8 )     =  8)
? ? ?     =  ???
: : )     =  ::)
: P     =  :P
: - [     =  :-[
: - X     =  :-X
: - \     =  :-\
: - *     =  :-*
: ' (     =  :'(

Not quite the same but still something that can change the whole meaning of a sentence is the automation that changes what may be considered coarse language into something a little more genteel.

An example was a recent post where I quoted from a book on folklore and described a lazy woman as a s-l-u-t,
which of course in times gone by was apparently shortened from the word "slattern"

Now imagine my surprise when on re reading my post found the woman described as  a very *friendly* person.

As with Erato I am not overly worried about this, but thought I may as well add my two pennorth.
