Could you clarify approx. birthdate for Mary Ann Birmingham? was she born c1870 or married c1870? the dates  will make a big difference to what information might be available (and also the family's religion please)

Three of the children of Peter Birmingham and Bridget Corless are listed in IGI  (see www.familysearch.org for details by doing parent search).

Youn might be able to narrow down the date hey arrived in England by birthplaces of the children and the family's appearance in English census records but records weren't kept of people travelling between Ireland and the rest of the U.K.

from Slater's commercial directory of 1870 - Nobility, Gentry & Clergy section

John Bermingham, Esq. J.P. Millbrook, Tuam

I'm not sure what the J.P. stands for..

there are a few Bermingham references around Co. Galway - Galway city, Loughrea, Dunmore & Gort

they seem to derive from '..the Berminghams, barons of Athenry'
The directory entry for Dunmore mentions 'Bermingham Castle, a beautiful ruin, once the seat of that ancient family'. Dunmore is described as 9 miles NE of Tuam

the only entry I see with the 'i' spelling of the surname in Co. Galway is a Grocer in Main st, Loughrea named Redmond Birmingham. he's also listed under the Ironmongers and Hardwaremen section.

You can order birth certificates for any of the children born in Ireland after 1864 but there are no birth certificates before that date so for earlier information you need to search for church records (if they exist).
www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

Also, civil registration of Catholic marriages began in 1864 so for the parents' marriage it's again a matter of hoping to find church records.

The Irish Family History Foundation website includes data for Co. Galway - see www.irish-roots.ie  They have parish record transcripts,  which cost 5 euro each to view. The index is free to search once you register.

I dont see any Corless surnames in Tuam around that time but these commercial  directories only include gentry, business and trades-people, also  the 1870 edition does not include many farmers. The families you are interested in may all have left before this edition was compiled.

I have a bit of a gap in the data I have before this timeframe but I'll see if there are other Bermingham/Birmingham or Corless entries in other directories.

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages in Ireland began in 1864 so for earlier dates you need to search for church records (if they exist).

Griffith's Valuation lists only a few Birminghams in Co. Galway but far more Berminghams:

Bermingham seems to be a name with many connections in Tuam

Bermingham House - "2mi/3km east of Tuam stands Bermingham House (1730), with good plasterwork and fine furniture. Hobbies & Activities category: Decorative arts display;  Furniture display;  Manor or country house" (http://www.planetware.com/tuam/bermingham-house-irl-ga-berh.htm & http://www.galwayhorse.com/berhse.html )

This was for sale recently - at just € 3.5 million! (http://www.sherryfitz.ie/resi/buy/propertydetail.aspx?id=262889&ST=1&pc=1)

1824 (Pigots)

 Edward Birmingham , esq. Lack
 Michl. Birmingham,  Dalgan
 Thos. Birmingham,  esq. Ash-grove

1846 (Slaters)

Entry for Dunmore, Co. Galway (close to Tuam)  includes the following : ".... The church forms a portion of the ancient monastery, said to have been founded by the Berminghams, barons of Athenry. There is also a chapel for Roman Catholics. Bermingham Castle, a beautiful ruin, once the seat of that ancient family, is in the neighbourhood"

Enrtry for Atherny, Co. Galway includes : "The ruin of a Dominican abbey here, from its antiquity and style of architecture, is the admiration of all strangers. It was founded by Myler De Bermingham, second baron of Athenry, in 1241, and was dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. ...."

De Bermingham seems to have been a Norman name. There's no way to be certain at this stage that these Bermingham/Birmingham people are connected - but it shows that the name was present in and around Tuam for quite a while.

The Birmingham family came from Birmingham city and arrived in Ireland with the norman invasion in 1269. The first famous Birmingham was Piers de Birmingham whose lineage can be traced in the peerage. The Birminghams settled in Galway and Kildare and Louth. The were known as Lord Louth and Baron of Athenry (Galway). The Birmingham family name is rare enough but there are a few families in Galway. The town of Dunmore  8 miles from Tuam was their last remaining stronghold and is where the family name fell into the use of "commoners" or in common usage as we would say. I have a little more info if you are interested.

Post by: galwayreader on Monday 27 July 09 22:06 BST (UK)
Yes. Hello I hope that I can help a little.
Here goes
The name Birmingham seems to have come from England. The first mention of it is Beomra Birm is derived from Beorma (or Beornmund) — Beorma was probably a local Saxon tribal leader, 'ing' is derived from ingas meaning 'tribe of' or 'people of', and 'ham' is short for hamlet or "heim", village or homestead. Therefore 'Birmingham' roughly means "The home of the tribe or people of Beorma.
The Norman invasion of England ment that a lord was given the area around Birmingham and this name became the family name eg. Richard De Birmingham.
The first recorded Birmingham in Ireland was Piers De Birmingham. In Irish the name Birmingham is MacFheorais or son of Piers. The Birmingham's were granted lands in Louth, Kildare and Galway.
In Galway their strongholds were in Athenry and Dunmore where the remains of their castles still can be seen. This is the branch that I come from. The earliest mention of a Birmingham in Tuam is a bishop in the 1300's. From 1300 to 1800 the Birmingham family were quite powerful and owned lands in north Galway. One of the most famous was John Birmingham who discovered a crater on the moon which he named in honour of the family. They also had a vast estate in the east indies.
After this the family lost its power but a few Birmingham families are still in the area and are all spelled with an i.
I hope that this will help a little.

It is just outside Tuam but is in the parish. You can check it up on google maps. It is a farming area. Have you any more details about the people that you are researching and I will see what I can find? I am a Birmingham but my family originally came from Dunmore although it is probably the same branch of the family.

Hi Again!
The only Information that i have on the people i am researching are the details i have already posted on this thread!
I know that my Great Grandmother  ''Mary Birmingham'' was born in Tuam-Galway. Her Mother was Bridget Corles/Corless and her Father Was Peter Birmingham. The Family emmigrated to England in the late 1800's and settled there in a place called Farnworth In Lancashire.
I am trying to trace the next Generation back from Bridget & Peter but keep coming up against brick walls (Very Large Ones at that)! I have not long been researching this line.
Any help or Info would be very much appreciated, also, you never know-there is a possibility that you could be connected along the lines to my Birmingham lineage?
Title: Re: BIRMINGHAM family in Tuam-Galway-Ireland

If you try the 1911 online census of ireland it lists a Julia Corless living in ahgloragh Levelly Co. Galway. This is the same aglora/argloragh as it is on the Tuam/Levally border. Could this person be a relative of your Bridget Corless? You can check it out online yourself. No Birminghams came up on the search so they may have been the last family in the townland. A few Birminghams come up in Tuam but it is difficult to link them without church records which i might be able to look into.
If nothing else the online census is a bit of fun to look at.
I'll pass anything else i find on. This has given me a bit of motivation to get at my own family tree again.

Hi,

My Great-greatgrandfather is James Birmingham who was born somewhere in Ireland.  I suspect his father was called John Birmingham.  I don't know if there is any connection with the Birminghams in Tuam, but James and his family lived in Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester and his children eventually settled in Farnworth, Bolton.  James was born around 1836.

Hi

I'm very new to this searching for the family tree and past, I believe I may be part of this family tree.

Peter and Bridget (Corless) being my great great great great grandparents.

My great grandma was May Birmingham who married George Cartwright.  Lived in farnworth throughout there lives. May was the daughter of Michael Birmingham who I believe was the son of Peter and Bridget's.

May and George had three children, John William, Peter and Brenda (cartwrights). Brenda is my grandma.

I currently live in farnworth with my own family.

I hope this may be of interest.

Hi

Pleased to meet you! Thank you for your reply. I’ve only just started getting back to researching my family tree. I actually got stuck trying to find Bridget and Peters parents in Ireland. If you like we could share what information we already have about our trees?

Kind regards

My 3rd gt grandfather was James Roche Jnr - his daughter Winifred married John Griffin (all Tuam). John and Winifred went to live in Walsall now West Midlands and their daughtr Ellen was born, my maternal grandfather's mother.

James Roche Jnr was baptised 24th August 1819 in Tuam - parents James Roche Snr and Honor Birmingham.

She may be from Westmeath though, can't find much about her other than her marriage in 1810 to James Roche.

It's where I have a problem, the only relatives I have found to have that came from Ireland. ::)

I would be happy to do so, as this is fairly new to me I'm just a little concerned my info may not be that accurate, my nan assures me its accurate though that does give me some confidence.

It's my nans route that I'm heading down at the moment.

The only parent I have is for peter birmingham born in 1842, I believe his father was a gentleman with the name Bartew Bermingham there is some confusion with the spelling but my nan tells me that the spelling did differ.

Where is it that you fit in with peter and bridget?

Thanks

Hello,

Peter and Bridget are my GGG grandparents - their daughter mary Anne Birmingham married my fathers, father “John Hodgkiss” in farnworth in Lancashire.

I’m very interested in trying to go backwards with peter Birmingham and Bridget corless? I’ll see what other information I have about them as I’ve just started researching my family tree.

Kind Regards

Thanks

my late father and his family were all born in farnworth and I used to live in Bolton but emigrated to Australia for some years but I’m now back in the uk in East Sussex.
What other info do you have on the biminghams which you know of so far? Did you know about maey Anne Birmingham ? She married John Hodgkiss and they lived at Kent st in farnworth in the 1800s I’m not sure why Mary left tuam in Ireland ?

Hi everyone. I'm in Australia, & have been trying to find some records for my Great Grandfather Peter Bermingham/Birmingham who arrived in Australia from the U.K. some time in the mid 1800's. The name on the few records I've found, here in Australia, is spelt both ways. I believe he arrived by ship in Maryborough Queensland. I've read through all the posts here. Does anyone know where & when the "Peter Birmingham" mentioned here lived and died?
