Thanks to the help of 'listeners', I'm progressing my search for William Paul, born 20 Mar 1824, Dunbartonshire Scotland (father John Paul, mother Ann Filshie). I've now located 4 'possible's for William entering Australia within the time frame 1852-1862 and am now searching for death records.
A kind person did a search of the Victorian records for me - nothing, however, she found one 'possible' for a William Paul who died in Dubbo, NSW in 1866. I received the certificate for this death yesterday and unfortunately he's not mine (would be pleased to share with others if it relates to their search - relates to father John Paul & mother Annie Cowell). This morning I have done online searches of the BDM in QLD and WA, but see that the indexes for TAS and SA are not accessible online. Would some kind person 'out there' be able to assist me with this. Many thanks in advance.

I should have added that the death certificates of the above will not show the parent' names.
However, a check of BISA shows the following about the first two of the above.....
PAUL William
Born c1810 Glascow LKS SCT
died 25th May 1870
buried at Myponga, SA
arrived by 1844
occ:upation given as Farmer
rlived at Willunga, Adelaide, McLaren Vale, & Myponga
married Elizibeth nee COOPER
children =
Margaret Miller SANDRYW (1844-1920),
Mary Ann (1848-1866),
son (1851-),
John (1853-1858)
PAUL William
born 1831
died 1901
arrived in 1849 on the WILLIAM WATSON
lived at Unley
religion was Presbyterian Methodist
married Agnes nee McARTHUR
children =
Dougal (1851-),
Jemima Erskine (1852-)
A check of SA Marriages reveals that neither married in South Australia.
I don't know if this is of any help, but at least SA has been checked for you.

Hi Helendg,
I think you have probably checked Victoria fairly thoroughly by the sound of things, but knowing how many young men came for the gold in that decade, I did see this death and wondered if you had seen it too
Paul, William. date,1869/00/00 Killed. Fall of earth @Maryborough. Mine, Alma..

Thanks Sue and Dee,
You have both given me good leads .. I hadn't seen the mining death in Queensland will 'check this out' now. Dee, many thanks for looking up the SA Indexes ... the William Paul born 1831 looks the closest fit, however, I don't like the names of his children. I really appreciate your help as I am accummulating a number of certificates that are 'duds' and can see that I need to gather as much information as I possibly can BEFORE desperately ordering certificates on a 'hope'. Thanks again for your help (I'll keep this query open in the hope that I get a response from the TAS Indexes).

Hi Helen,
This is a mining death in Victoria ;D

There was an inquest into the death that Sue has mentioned, Helen.
Reference = 338
The death index for him tells us that he was aged, 47, from Cornwall, Parents unknown, Ref = 4545.
If the information given was correct, then this wouldn't be him.....but information given was not always correct.

Thanks for that. I keep running into Cornish Pauls, so doesn't look promising. I'll wait and see if I get a response from TAS as had a few other family members head down there. I've also checked out the new BDM site in NZ (address below for those interested - it just came online):
http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/home/
There is one 'possible' in NZ, however, the timeframe is 3 years out so I still have my fingers crossed that I'll find him in TAS. Thanks again everyone.
