Title: William Cain, Inspector of Police
Post by: Forfarian on Thursday 26 February 09 18:53 GMT (UK)
I am helping a friend with her family tree, and we have got back to William Cain, who was Inspector of Police in Castletown.

He was born about 1842 in Douglas, and in the 1861 census he was in 24 Church Street, probably in Douglas, with wife Jane and 5 children. In 1881 he was in Douglas Road, Malew, with wife Margaret, born 1844/5 in Jurby, and 5 children (not all the same ones as in 1861). In 1891 he was at 5 Douglas Street, Castletown with Margaret and 6 children, and in 1901 at 2 Milner Terrace, Castletown with Margaret and 4 children.

If anyone has come across this William Cain

1. What was Margaret's surname?
2. Who were Margaret's parents?
3. Was William the son of Thomas Cain, shoemaker, and Esther?
4. If so, who were Esther's parents?

Any help to take this family back as far as possible would be appreciated.

Hi,
Wouldn't marriage certs provide you with Margaret's father's name & occupation and you could then check out the census for him & find his wife, if she's still alive?

William's father could be established ina similar way.

They would indeed, but before sending away for certificates I wondered if someone else might already have gone over the same ground and/or might turn out to be a relative.

Probably asking the jolly obvious question, but have you checked out the Syrname Interests list at the foot of this web page?

Yes, and I have sent a PM to one person who may share the interest.

Thank you, Frances, that is very useful. It may be him, though the details don't match well.

The censuses suggest that he was born in 1842/3 not 1838, an inspector rather than a sergeant, in charge at Castletown not Douglas, and retired by 1901 rather than 1906, but it is still worth looking into.

Much appreciated.

the full list of police is linked to off that entry on my site - there is an active cain researcher on the board I suggested who probably has the tree.

she would appear to be margaret Shimmin/Killey according to civil birth registration of dau Esther in 1879 (chief constable at that period was approximately sergeant) - not quite sure which is maiden name here.
Civil reg only came in 1877/8 - before that there was voluntary reg - the IGI covers the Established church upto this period but not the Methodist chapels - you might find more info at www.iomfhs.im - follow the research link to the index to marriages

Thank you again, Frances. Your pointer to the indexes is just what I was looking for. That is excellent. And also for the hint about an active Cain researcher.

My friend is descended from Clarence Douglas Cain, who is in the index of births with father William and mother Killey.

I see on the IGI a marriage of Margaret Killey to Robert Shimmin in 1868, and a baptism of Margaret Kelley to William Kelley and Catherine Quine in Jurby in 1844, so I shall look into that as a possible line.

Many thanks. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I am a great great grandson of Inspector cain and have done quiet a lot of research on him. My father has a walking stick presented to him on his retirement from the force. His daughter, Ann, is my great grandmother, but I am having trouble locating the grave of her brother George Percival who died in the Persian Gulf in 1916
