I'm trying to locate birth details for a Mary Ann Thurman, daughter of William Thurman (1783-1859) and Mary Revill (1787-1864).
Mary Ann was born about 1821 in Nottinghamshire according to 1861 Census, 1871 Census and her death record in 1886.
But I can't find her birth or baptism record.
She may have been baptised in St Mary or St Peter Nottingham.
Can anyone help?
With thanks

Hi Tiggy
If I've got the right one then she was baptized 20th Sept 1818, d/o William & Mary, abode :- Park Street, Nottingham. Fathers occupation Law stationer. She was baptised at St Nicholas Church, maybe that's why you couldn't find her.
There's a possible marriage for William and Mary Revell, 23rd May 1811 St Peters Nottingham. I thought that date looked a little early so I've checked to see if Mary Ann had siblings and yes, she did which confirms it's the correct marriage:-
William 21st Sept 1813. Fathers occupation stationer
James 18th Dec 1814. " " "
Martha Revill Thurman 14th Aug 1816. Fathers occupation Law stationer
George Revill Thurman 4th Feb 1821. " " " "
Charlotte 14th April 1823. " " " "
Edward 9th Oct 1825. " " " "
All the children were baptized at the same church and the family lived at the same address all the time.
Sadly, to say there was also another Mary, buried 19th Jan 1814, aged 4 months and a Mary Foster Thurman buried 20th Sept 1820 aged 8 months, again the address given for both these babes was Park Street, but they were buried at St Peters Church Nottingham. The middle name Foster may well be another family name - worth persuing I would think.
Hope this helps

You well already have this information, but Wiliam was baptized 18th Sept 1783 at St Marys Nottingham and his parents appear to have been James Thurman and Ann Baker, who married 10th May 1779, St Marys Nottingham.
William was one of 8 children:-
Jane Bap. 27th Feb 1780
Sarah Bap. 6th Feb 1782
Thomas Bap. 31st March 1785
Ann Bap. 22nd Oct 1786
James Bap 3rd Feb 1788
Elizabeth Sophia Bap 26th July 1789
John Bap 10th April 1791
All baptized at St Marys Nott'm, no other information given.

Hi BG
Thank you so much for all that info in both your posts. I've not yet come across the surname Foster in relation to the family but I'll store this info away in case I do! I'd found the names of some of Mary Ann's siblings, but not all of them and it's great to have their dates of birth too.
With many thanks

Hi,
I'm years behind in reading this post but I have just stumbled upon it whilst trying to do some family research on connections of my Thurman Family Tree.
I am very interested in you list of 8 children of James Thurman and Ann Baker.
I have a George Thomas Thurman christened 1795 to a James Thurman and Ann Thurman at St Peters Nottinghamshire.
Could this be the very same James and Ann Thurman? Did they in fact have another child after John??

A few burials
Edward Thomas Thurman buried 4.2. 1823 aged 28 Pepper St
James Thurman buried 7.3. 1832 aged 76 Pepper St
Ann Thurman buried 12.9. 1832 aged 77 Pepper St
All buried at St Peters.
Which line are you following?
If looks like some of their other children were buried at Tollerton, but not sure if its the same family

Wow!
Im following the line of George Thomas Thurman which has been challenging but interesting! I think theres some serious "family closet stories" because not much info has been passed down.
My direct tree line is this
Unconfirmed but highly likely
James Thurman married Ann Baker
George Thomas Thurman b1795 married to Mary (Unknown last name)
Evidence based
Eliza Thurman b1826 (had illegitimate son- used her Thurman name)
George Thomas Thurman b1844 married Fanny Rutter
Harold Thurman b1890 married Gwendoline Amelia Morgan
William Harold Thurman b1925 married Elaine Dudgeon Gass
Rowan Harold Thurman b1956 married Marita Barnard
Alana Mary Thurman b1989 (thats me)
It has become guess work since Eliza Thurman (I have her sons George Thomas Thurman birth certificate which shows no father). In the 1851 census I have:
George Thurman 57 (Head), Eliza Thurman 27 (Daughter), George Thomas Thurman 6 (grandson).
So its interesting that my whole existence of my last name is based on a female.. I could be any surname in the world because of the lack of Father on her sons birth certificate!
So any info anyone has that links us together in a tree would be so great!!

I have found the family in the 1851 census and George gives his birthplace as Bealings, Suffolk. What makes you think its the same George who was born in Nottingham.

There is a George Thaurman baptised 23 April 1797 at Little Bealings Suffolk to Robert Thaurman and Mary Bruce. (from family search)
Carol

Thanks Carol, that makes more logical sense than the George Thurman I was thinking it was. Now to research more on his parents.. Looks like theres hundreds of Mary Bruces!!! Not able to find a marriage for them yet!

Sunflower mentions some Thurman's burred at Tollerton, Nottingham.
Many of the Tollerton, Nottingham folks descended from Edward Thurman born 1630 in Lockington, Leicestershire and he moved to Wysall, about 8 miles from Tollerton.
I am descended from John Thurman (Edward's younger brother) baptized in Lockington in 1640. John's decedents; some stayed in Leicestershire, others settled in Wawickshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Edward and John's father was Henry Thurman born 1600 and their Mother Ann (nee James).

Hi, This is my first post to RootsChat, so I hope that I am responding to the correct message.
The Foster name as it connects to this branch of the Thurmans comes via the marriage of William’s (1783) brother Samuel Need Thurman 1792-1843. They had a daughter Mary Foster Thurman who was baptized 8 Feb 1821 at St. Mary’s Nottingham and buried on 20 Sep 1821 at St. Peter’s Nottm.
Saml Need Thurman married Sarah Foster 1789-1840 at St. Peter’s on 1 Aug 1815. Sarah had a sister named Mary Foster 1792-1858 who remained unmarried and connected with some of the Thurman children who moved to Leeds in the late 1840s.

Hi,
Regarding the Thurman family buried at Tollerton, Nottinghamshire, I am descended from one of the brothers, Thomas 1714-1795, who arrived at Tollerton in the mid 1730s. I’ve traced this branch back to East Leake, Notts. and tentatively on back to Thrumpton, Notts and Lockington, Leics. One of the problems I have encountered is the lack of parish records in the Commonwealth period. Would like this thread to become active.

Hi,
Regarding James Thurman, hairdresser, 1757-1832 and his son George Thomas Thurman. He was baptized 28 Sep 1795 at St. Peter’s Nottm. I haven’t been able to find a record of his death in the UK.
Although it is not at George Thomas had died before 1832, the fact that he is not mentioned in his father’s will leads me to speculate that he was not living when the will was drafted, 19 Feb 1832.

Hello VaughnThurman and welcome to RC! You have activated the thread!
But if there’s anything else you’d like help with, or if you want to reach out to other people researching this family, you might be best to start a new thread; you can always put a link to this one to avoid too much repetition if you want to.

Hello Annie65115,
Thanks for your message of welcome. Good advice about starting a new thread. It’ll take me a while to learn to navigate RootsChat. I see that you are following the Upton family from Desford. Might you have come across a Mary Upton babt 1714? I have one Samuel Thurman, blacksmith, marrying Mary Upton in 1735 in Tollerton, Nottinghamshire. She died shortly after giving birth to a son named John in 1736.
There was a Thurman family active in Desford from the early 17th century.

Hi; I don’t have that Mary Upton anywhere in my tree, and I can’t see any baptisms for a Mary Upton in desford prior to 1722.

Annie65115,
Many thanks for your quick reply. Leave no stone unturned, as the saying goes.
