Title: Dunragit - Robert Hill Cockburn
Post by: claireandsi on Monday 02 March 09 06:45 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find a bit more information regarding the death of Robert Hill Cockburn (d.  08.03.1927).  I have his death entry and RCE from SP and he drowned in the Saw Mill Dam in the grounds of Dunragit House, where he was the gardener.

I was wondering if it was likely that the incident itself and subsequent inquest would have been covered in the local newspaper.  Also, where is he likely to be buried?

If anyone can point me in the right direction, or even have a look for me while doing some of their own research, I'd be very grateful.

The event would probably have been covered by the Wigtownshire Free Press, unfortunately his death was 2 years after the point at which records that I know of cover.

As to burial, I would suggest looking first at the church where he was christened if you know it, or at his local parish church which I am guessing would be in Glenluce.

Thanks for that Kirsty.   The Wigtownshire Free Press pages are very useful, although not for Robert unfortunately.   He was born near Hamilton in Lanarkshire and the family left the area completely so it is unlkely he was buried there.

i'll keep looking - any other ideas or kind offers of look-ups would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. Did you ever find any more on this one. I live in the old sawmill and was rather surprised to read this part of its history.

Hi

Thanks for your interest.
I still have not found any more detail regarding his death, but I did find his gravestone in Glenluce churchyard.  If I come up with anything, I'll let you know.

Hi Claire. Thanks for your quick reply. I have been trying to find information relating to the mill /dunragit house and will certainly share if I come up with anything. Another curiosity in this story is that I was also born in Hamilton.

All the best. Andrew
