Title: Moscrip
Post by: Avalon on Saturday 07 March 09 09:46 GMT (UK)
I found this Newspaper articles....

Should this meet the eye of Robert MOSCRIP, Carpenter, late of Glasgow, Scotland, and last heard of at Carcoar in 1885, or anyone knowing his whereabouts, will greatly oblige by sending his address to his brother, John MOSCRIP, Wellshot Station, Barcoo River, Queensland.

I beleive John Moscrip full name is John Henry Neill Moscript.

Would anyone know the family of John Moscrip

Title: Re Moscrip (John Henry Niel Moscrip)
Post by: LHR on Friday 04 June 10 07:35 BST (UK)
John Henry Niel Moscrip  b.28 Sep 1861 Longformacus,  died  12 Nov 1945 Barcaldine, Queensland, Australia.
The inscription reads: “In loving memory of John Henry Neil Moscrip died 12 th Nov 1945 aged 83 years. And his beloved wife Ellen Mary Moscrip died 14 th Oct 1954 aged 90 years. Also their dear son John William Patrick Moscrip died 17 Jan 1956 aged 54 years.”
John Henry is my husbands great grandfather by John's daughter Mary Margaret Moscrip b 05 Apr 1899 at Isisford, Qld , Australia.

John Henry Moscrip arrived in Australia on the ship "Linlithgowshire", a barque weighing 1357 tons. It sailed from Glasgow 10th October 1883 and arrived in Brisbane on Tuesday 15th January 1884. It sailed under D.Scott, master; W. Middleton, S.Supt; and Matron Mrs Orton. John was 21yrs at the time, and sailed on his own as a Bounty Immigrant. (Ref. QSA IMM/126 p172 [Z1967]).   The "Linlithgowshire" was previously named "Jeanie Landles."

Taken from The Queenslander, Saturday, June 30, 1888:   MISSING FRIENDS:
"Should this meet the eye of Robert MOSCRIP, Carpenter, late of Glasgow, Scotland, and last heard of at Carcoar in 1885, or anyone knowing his whereabouts, will greatly oblige by sending his address to his brother, John MOSCRIP, Wellshot Station, Barcoo River, Queensland."
John was trying to find his brother Robert as he was about to marry Ellen Mary Scanlan on 20 Sep 1895 at Barcaldine, Qld.

We do not know if he ever managed to find his brother Robert,  and we have been unable to do so. It was this newspaper item which first alerted us that Robert came to Australia as well.

John Henry was a saddler in western Queensland ( Wellshot Station, Isisford)

If anyone can help us find Robert Niel Moscrip, born Longformacus 10 May 1860, we would be pleased.
Also pleased to get any information on Alison Currie Moscrip b.11 Sept 1866 at Greenlaw, Berwickshire, Scotland. She married in Queensland, Australia ( 1888) to Benjamin Joseph Smith but we have no further details concerning them.

Alison Currie Moscrip married Benjamin Joseph Smith on 19th April 1888.  The marriage certificate shows Alison's birth place as Greenlaw, Berwick and age of 21, father William Moscrip (hotel keeper) and mother Margaret Neil.

Benjamin's birth place shows as 'Premuda, Austria'.  I cannot find this town/area and welcome suggestions as to location.  Age 33, father Gargonea Smith (mariner), and mother Marguerita Smith.

Alison and Benjamin lived in Boundary Street, Spring Hill, Brisbane.

Alison moved to Canada, without Benjamin (unsure timing and circumstances).  Will ask Aunt if she has more details.

Attached pictures of Benjamin Smith and Alison (Canadian passport in name of Allison)

Hi Smudger24.
Have a look at my posting-  from LHR on Page 1, regarding John Henry Niel Moscrip, particularly  the section "Also pleased to get any information on Alison Currie Moscrip b.11 Sept 1866 at Greenlaw, Berwickshire, Scotland. She married in Queensland, Australia (1888) to Benjamin Joseph Smith but we have no further details concerning them."

My notes say the Marriage certificate is a Queensland ( Australia) marriage NO. 1888/12283.
Marriage Queensland, 19 April 1888 : Registration number B012283 ( This would suggest a marriage in Brisbane).

Immigration:  Arrived Brisbane via "Dacca" on 26 July 1887. From Berwickshire Scotland

1887: "Your sister Alice has arrived and is anxious to hear from you." ( I seem not to have the newspaper reference for this message, but will be able to locate it and get back to you.)

Alison may have been called  Agnes (on census records) or Annie.
I formed the conclusion they lived at Carcour in Central Western NSW, and there were 4 (maybe more) children.
.  William B Smith, b 1890, Son of Benjamin & Annie M Smith at Rodd Street, Carcoar, NSW. Enlisted WW1 at Cootamundra, NSW, Australia, Service No 6819( WW1file B2455, Smith WB)
.  Walter G Smith b.1896,
.  Edward S Smith B 1900, and J
.  John L. Smith b. 1902.

Your information is new to us, so I will mull over it,  do some more searching and get back to you.

Recently available info allows me to rule out the Benjamin Joseph Smith family living at Carcour ( Not ours).

The Telegraph (Brisbane, Qld) Thu 28 July 1887 Page 1: JOHN MOSCRIP, your Sister Alice has arrived and anxious to hear from you. Address, Alice Moscrip, G.P.O., Brisbane.
John Moscrip posted many advertisements looking for their brother Robert, who also came to Australia. We think Robert returned home to Longformacus in Scotland.

I am keen to see  the details page of Alison's passport to Canada, and the source for Boundary Street, Spring Hill address.

Thanks LHR
