Help! I tried to change my profile picture that was on the right side of here. I've somehow managed to get rid of the family crest, have selected add own pic, or whatever it says, chosen & added the pic, changed prefrences...but it's not here!!! Any tips??? ???

Hi Debbie,
How about starting again from scratch, with
Topic: Adding images to Posting & Profiles
1) Resizing and cropping your image file:[/color]

and let us know what exactly isn't working.
Good luck,

Or so I thought...
-
hi Bob,
Ok, I've followed the intructions exactly...firstly 3c ,which I'd previously done then as suggested 3a. The pic is only 47.2 kb & I've reduced the size using stretch/skew in paint, but you can see the result.
I'm losing the will to live ???
-
Right...enough...Losing my patience...give me a kid threatening to punch me any day over IT!!!! >:( >:( >:(
I've taken it off & will try again tomorrow.
Oh! The kid would be in school...not one of my own ;D

Hi Debbie,
I think you forgot

Right click on the image and under properties you can get the address:

Hi Susan
Posting images is not allowed on the look-up boards, the facility is disabled.
You can post them elsewhere, e.g. the Common Room, and post a link on your thread.

TESTING TESTING
-
OK the photo worked but I have to learn to make it smaller - will go and practise now.
Trying to work out how to do the writing where it "moves" LOL don't know how to explain it but ...... will try to figure it out or ask Ozybob to help me.
-
Just want to see if this works ok
-
Sorry folks. Just a size test :P
-
Just a practice avatar
-
I am testing to see if I can add an image to my profile. Have tried 6 times but nothing happens.
-
Oh dear still nothing happens. As I am a very senior user I am not very good with computers. Managed to put some photos on the resoration board some time ago, though I could not resize those. What am I doing wrong?
-
Hi Kesannah,
have you read this ?
Topic: Adding images to Posting & Profiles
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,130922.0.html
Keep the image under 10 KB and a mx. width of about 120 pixels and it should be OK.
Try again, and if doesn't work, give us a blow-by-blow description, up to the bit were it goes wrong, so we help.
good luck,
Bob
-
Thanks Bob. I shall have another try.
-
Kes, think i did it.
-
Bob, Again I have tried but still no joy.
I click on I will upload my own picture , the click on browse, choose the photo from my pictures, open the picture and then I put in the text "Aunt Maud" then click change profile.
The picture is 37.9KB (whatever that means,I could not see anything which says about pixcels). Am I being a doddering old fool or what?
-
Well done Sheron. Tis idiot could not manage it. Also can't do maths. Bob said to keep it under 10kb and I posted (or tried to) on that was 37.9.
Just don't get old Sheron
-
Kes
Don't worry, many of us have been there. I had less hair by the time I was succesful.
Try attaching your proposed piccie to a post on this thread, then we can see if there's a problem.
JULIAN
-
well, goodness, i did it, tried to change it, got no where, then it did it!!
-
Hi Kesannah,
the big problem is that the facility "I will upload my own picture" doesn't seem to work too well.
try this,
Use 1) Resizing and cropping your image file:[/color]
in the tutorial to resize the image.
then load it to this topic as an attachment, and then use the address of the image, here on the topic to copy into "I will upload my own picture"
first step, resize and put the picture here ....
-
It is a bit iff, Bob, works when it feels like it ::)
-
like me ;D
-
Well done Sheron. Tis idiot could not manage it. Also can't do maths. Bob said to keep it under 10kb and I posted (or tried to) on that was 37.9.
Just don't get old Sheron.
This is the photo I was trying to post.
-
whoops got booted out!! Try again Kes!! ;D
-
\Sorry, Can't understand all the jargon for resizing and can't even get my reply to appear complete with picture. Think I shall have to forget adding a "Avatar "is it?
-
try another photo Kes.
-
Well I shall try this photo and see what happens
-
there you go, you did it!!lovely photo :D
-
Well I got the photo on the last message but it is big. I just cannot grasp how to change its size. This is my O H.Still doesn't help for use on my profile though.
-
thats your hubby? bless him!! ;D
oh resizing,Kes, i had such flaming trouble last week, yet before i managed it ???
-
Well I got the photo on the last message but it is big. I just cannot grasp how to change its size. This is my O H.Still doesn't help for use on my profile though.
Great, we can see what the problem is (this picture would be too big). You need 10 KB and a mx. width of about 120 pixels (as Bob said earlier)
The pixel size is 512x 800. It would need to be about 120 x 190 (use the 120 across as a guide).
What do you use to resize a photo?
JULIAN
-
Kes, if you cant do it, can you email to someone who can? not me!! ;Dim terrible!!
-
Have a go at resizing, as in the tutorial, but just in case you are getting fed up, then use this one, and practice later on a different picture ;D
right-click on the image, and then in properties you can find the address (URL). in this case, it's
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=202137.0;id=34244;image
try it and see, just to get the idea, then go on to the next step :)
Bob
-
Bob I dont even know if I have got that right. Cannot see the woods for the trees I suspect. Blood pressure is rising fast. It is so frustrating.
-
Obviously I did not succeed. Shall leave it for today, I am so fed up and tired now. Thanks for trying to help me though. I do appreciate your efforts
-
At least we've seen a photo of one of your Hydes! It's a lovely one.
Betty
-
That's my first post using my new Avatar, & it's worked LOL
-
Betty, If you want to have a look at some of the others they are on photo restoration board. Nan & Grandad, Aunts Maud and Gert.
-
Thanks kesannah, I'll go & look.
I feel as if I know your Hydes, & it's nice to put faces to names :D
Betty
-
I am going to have another try at putting my avatar on my profile later today.
-
Hi kesannah
I seem to have the knack at the moment, ;D can I help?
Betty
-
You can certainly try Betty. I have just moved the image to My Documents as Sheron suggested. Now to try yet again
-
Just upload to here, & I'll work from that.
-
Thanks Betty, Here is the picture.
-
First try.
This one is 150x96 pixels, 7.08kb
As it's quite a tall photo, any bigger might not work.
We'll see what is looks like here.
-
Not bad, it might look OK as your profile picture. Worth a try
Do you know what to do next? If it doesn't look right, we can try again.
-
Betty I am not too sure what to do next. I usually go to edit profile and put in the url and browse to find the photo. Nothing ever happens. Am I being dense?
-
I have once again tried, but never does the picture apear. I really must be daffy. I can manage to post one on a message-no problem.
-
Right click on the photo I posted.
Click on 'save picture as'
Give the pic a name & save it to your desktop or pictures folder
On rootschat, click on Profile
On the left look for Edit Profile Click on that.
Then scroll down to 'I will upload my own picture'
Click the circle so a dot appears.
Just underneath is a box that says 'browse'
Click that & find the picture on your computer.
Click the pic, and details will appear in the 'browse' box
Scroll down to the bottom & click on 'Change Profile'
Then post on here & your message should have your new pfofile picture
Fingers crossed!
-
Did I do that Betty or did you? If I did it I am absolutely amazed. Did not do anything I hadn't done before. Thanks for all your help and patience.
WHOOPEEEEEE
-
oh shes done it, thank goodness ;) ;D
-
Hooray!!!
It look good. Now your blood pressure can go back to normal LOL
Betty
-
Thank Goodness indeed Sheron, I was only going to give it one more try and then forget about it. Forgot to put a title to it but never mind. It is there.
-
Thanks Betty, I though if the blood pressure went any higher I would be joining the Ancestors pretty soon :D
-
You could always try editing your profile ;D
-
Well done Kesannah and Betty :) :) :)
-
Thanks Julian, It was more Bettys effort than mine I think, but at least it worked. I am more than pleased. My brain is a bit less addled now. :D
-
well done mum Now you can tell me how to do it cos i cant remember ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
It looks lovely, Kes. Has your other half seen it yet?
Muddy, follow my instructions on this thread.
If you can't resize, I'll do that for you.
Betty
-
thanks betty i will give it ago
-
No Betty, If he sees it it will be by accident, not design. He doesn't like the photo anyway and would ask me to take it off. Absolutely no chance of me doing that after all my efforts and your patience. IT STAYS THERE!!!

Hi Betty,
Love your boat - make a nice painting.
If muddypuddy would like me to help I'd be pleased to oblige but as u know its a long haul.
Tell her to look out for me on chat or beeb - tied up today but should be around this evening.
Stanley.
-
Stan, Muddy is working durig the day. Gettining her new car today as well. Friday is her night for doing the family shopping. She could be on later though. I shall let her know you are willing to help.

Thanks kesannah, I wondered where muddy was, I've been looking out for her on the beeb board.

Thanks Kesannah, I'll keep an eye out for her - I love the sailor suit!!!

Woohoo its worked at last........ now to workout how to make it smaller Doh! Doh! Doh! Doh!
Sirius
-
Hope its worked
-
It looks amazing!!
-
Yep it is!
Sirius (α CMa / α Canis Majoris / Alpha Canis Majoris) is the brightest star in the night-time sky, with a visual apparent magnitude of −1.47. This binary star system consists of a white main sequence dwarf star and a faint white dwarf companion. It is located in the constellation Canis Major.
Sirius can be seen from almost every inhabited region of the Earth's surface (those living north of 73.284 degrees cannot see it) and, in the Northern Hemisphere, is known as a vertex of the Winter Triangle. The best time of year to view it is around January 1, when it reaches the meridian at midnight.
Under the right conditions, Sirius can be observed in daylight with the naked eye. Ideally the sky must be very clear, with the observer at a high altitude, the star passing overhead, and the sun low down on the horizon.
-
Is it also known as the Dog Star??
-
Yes its is
It is also Orion's hunting dog, the constellation you can see in the picture on the right hand side........
Orion that is, on the right hand side

Can anyone tell me just how to put a small picture under where my name is please.
I have put pictures on the restoration board but how do you put the small picture under you name on the left.

You Beat Me to It! ::) ;) ;D ;D
-
Hi Thank you for the information link, is it easy to do, I found it quite simple to post a picture on the restoration board, the only problem there was the size of the actual photograph. This looks like it would have to be very a small photograph, I am not too sure how to resize a photograph.
Elizabeth
-
Hi Elizabeth,
The information and links is all that thread I posted. For a profile pic you need to keep the size to a width of about 100 pixels. If you can't work out how to resize with your own software, try the link at the bottom provided by Arranroots. It is very user friendly......Kris ;)
-
:)
-
Elizabeth
If you put your photo on here there is a nice lady that will resize it for you.I was like you i never could resize my photo so she did it for me on the original adding images topic. If you put this topic in your favorites you wont loose it and you can come back and practice again ;D

No worries Chrystal. If you were after restoration it was perfect as was. For anywhere elses we suggest no wider than about 600 - 700 pixels is good - For an avatar 100 is perfect. (150 pixels max) I posted it at 600 ;)
Will check back to see how you get on. ;)

I tried to follow the instructions for adding a photo of my father but got this message:
An Error Has Occurred!
my_father.
You cannot upload that type of file. The only allowed extensions are txt, rtf, jpg, jpeg, gif, tif, pdf, mpg, png, ged.
But, it was a jpeg which I was trying to attach. What did I do wrong?
Jamie
-
Testing:
file 1 = .jpg
file 2 = .jpeg
-
Well that worked OK.
I have often had the experience of having real errors but getting the wrong error messages
(which meant a lot of time looking in the wrong place :'( )
Are you sure it's a JPEG file (.jpg, .jpeg) and not JPEG 2000 (usually .jp2) ??
How about the file size ?- under 500 KB ??
File name ?? there is a message "file with this name already present" but try a different name anyway, just in case.
Bob
-
Decided to try it in pdf format. Here goes…
-
Oh dear. It comes out as a pdf but when I opened it to see it, it was gigantemormous.
It's getting late here in Australia, so I'll sign off and try again later. I must learn how to resize the pdf ;D
-
Well, I decided to change the pic from a jpeg, or a pdf to a gif and I tried posting it again on the Travellers site when replying to a post this morning. And it worked!!! It may be a thought too big, but … I tried to post it here, too, for your comment, but it wouldn't let me because I'd already sent it... can you see it somewhere to tell me if it's too big?
Jamie
-
Hi Jamie,
Well done :)
and the size is fine.
Every image on RootsChat has a unique name, which is why you couldn't post the same image twice.

Hi Jen,
Help!! Is that too big? If so can someone tell me how to make it smaller please?
If that's meant for the restoration board, then it's fine.
If you are just posting snapshots on other boards, then we recommend a maximum width of 500-700 pixels.
This helps for easier viewing (doesn't stretch the screen sideways), saving space, and for better RootsChat performance.
Tips here ....

can't post an image
-
I'm going to 'attach a photo.........' then browsing then opening, but when I hit 'post' all I get is a blank message body.
Also my photos seem to have my whole pathway to them, eg this computer\my name\my documents\pictures\ .......etc so how do I rename them so it's just for eg saying 'red shoes.jpg'
-
Hi Silvery,
you have to have something in the message body to post at all, hence this error message.
And don't worry about the long directory names "eg this computer\my name\my documents\pictures\ .......etc ". That is just where the file is stored on your computer. Somewhere in that directory you should see the file you want, so when you do, click on open, and carry on from there.
Bob
-
aahhaaa thankyou
will try again. This bit wasn't in the instructions.
-
excellent, thanks Bob.
Now for a bit of practise re-sizing and so on. I may even get an avatar picture up. I have read the long thread on that, so we will see.........
-
Bob I am just having a look at that thread again, and you did put it in your instructions. Just that I didn't understand :-[
-
avatar size
-
that looks about right, and properties seems to say so too. So that's avatar sizing nearly there. Now choose an avatar :)
-
silvery, it took me ages to get my avatar picture to work. I followed all the instructions, but it wouldn't change to the photo I was trying to post. I left it a couple of days, tried it again and it worked! Flipping awkward computers!!

Photo far to big I think
-
Hi Cool,
The pic looks good...just a smidge too big, I think. If you look at the pic's properties, it is 875 pixels wide....if you make it about 600 pixels wide it should be good......that is the measurement I use for posting.......for an avatar I use 100 pixels wide.
Cheers

hi I had a Avatar but wanted a small moving signature too, I managed to get the signature on but the Avatar disappeared, is it because we cannot have both ??? thanks
-
Hi eeyores4me,
I don't really know the answer, but it could be.
Maximum sizes allowed for avatars are 20 KB 150x150 pixels.
And unfortunately, some more bad news
You are allowed 500 Bytes in your signature and the image is exceeding this.
Please can you remove it.
Properties:
Size of File: 48.66 KB (49824 bytes)
regards,
Bob
ps. - this applies for everybody who has an image in their signature -
Please check that the total signature size does not exceed 500 Bytes.

I am so sorry .. for the life of me I've never been able to work out a signature is .. and now eeyores4me apparently has one that moves?
I went to my profile and ticked the box just to see what might look different .. nothing at all so I've just returned it to how it was .. :D
Could someone tell me please? :)
-
@ Pels.
A signature is what comes at the bottom of every posting.
In Profile, look for
Research names or areas:
Your research area or names researched are displayed
at the bottom of each of your post or personal
message.
Underneath the message box you will see Max 500; characters remaining: ...
@ eeyores4me
It may be that you have to delete it in your profile, (remember to save your changes) and then log off and log on again

Thanks Bob! :)
-
Bob ... so am I right in thinking that the bit at the bottom, for e.g. on Pels last post, that says about N. Yorks ... etc ... is the signature ?? What most people have as saying something about copyright ??
-
Hi Lydart,
yes that's right.
On a letter the signature always comes at the bottom.
On a posting, the signature also comes at the bottom,
but in the profile it's the Research names or areas: box.

Bob

Bob ... so am I right in thinking that the bit at the bottom, for e.g. on Pels last post, that says about N. Yorks ... etc ... is the signature ?? What most people have as saying something about copyright ??
And incidentally, everyone who carries out census look-ups should have the Copyright statement in their signature line (it doesn't sit well under your avatar & stretches the page).
Census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Debbie,
Actually, yes, it is too wide.
The biggest problem, is that unless people deliberately add carriage returns everywhere to the text,
the screen needs to be constantly scrolled back and forth, to read the replies.
(In the worst cases, people ask why there is no reply button for the topic ?
- there is, but it's just way off screen to the right somewhere ;D )
We do recognise that there are special cases e.g. photo board etc, and sometimes for other documents, such as yours,
so in these case, if there were no other way, we would accept it.
But may I make a suggestion:
how about splitting it into two parts ??
Feel free to use these, if it helps :)

Thanks Bob,
I thought it might be....whoops...being an impatient woman I went ahead & posted it anyway ;)
Thanks for fiddling with it for me. I'm absolutely useless at this stuff!!

The posting is just fine ... but I think you needed to edit out all that white stuff below the soldier !
-
The white stuff below is actually snow, Lydart. It was January when I was stationed at Crookham, Hants in 1946 ;D
-
It's terrible deep :)
I think the photo needs cropping to around the edges of the actual print.
-
Like so........ (doing this for practice for myself)

Another practice post.
-
Well we both seem to have got the hang of it. ;D
-
Another attempt (hoping that it appears much smaller)

By Jove, I think he's got it ;D ;D

Well done !
Easy when you know how !

just testing...fingers crossed
-
Blimey done it at last! It doesn't seem to like the 600dpi scans, for some reason even though I resized them to 750pixels across. So this is the 300 dpi (I hope)
-
and again straightened

:D Just had to say...what a wonderful photo!!
I wish that handsome devil in the uniform was a relative of MINE :o
-
It's very small, 1943 summer, my mum Patty, blonde hair, and Dilly. They would be about 16 and 17. In the middle S/Sgt George Aloyisius Green from Indiana. Just got it today from Dilly. So I don't know what happened to him, but he's not ours. They married others ;D
-
Having a first try. Fingers crossed it is the right size :P
-
I hope you've got the other half of that picture JMP ! Polldoll has just done an AMAZING restore of a very similar RAF photo ... look on the photo restore board ...
... edit ...
I see you have already posted both halves on http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,297794.0.html

I am trying to insert an image into a post but when I click on
Attach a photograph or image (and other options).. I do not get the Attach Browse boxes appearing.
Stan
-
Are you trying to do it on a lookup request board, maybe? (The feature is disabled there) :-\
-
Thanks Tati I was not aware of that :o I've spent the last half hour tearing my hair out trying to insert an image. Can you insert one in a PM?
Stan
-
Hi Stan,
The thread you are trying to post the image on is presumably on one of the
Lookup Boards .. we are unable to post images on these threads using the
normal way of attaching .. because of the RootsChat copyright policy! :-\
I use Imageshack and then the Ctrl C .. Ctrl V method.

Sorry Tati just seen your reply .. :)

Thanks Tati I was not aware of that :o I've spent the last half hour tearing my hair out trying to insert an image. Can you insert one in a PM?
Stan
Only if it's retrieved from an internet site (as opposed to your hard drive). So you have to upload to a site such as imageshack first and then use the little 'insert image' icon. But then that's something you can do on the lookup boards too ;)
(Opps, sorry Pels)
-
Thanks Tati, but I tried imageshack without success, so I have used a URL to a page on my web site instead.

I've put a picture (above) of my Grx2 Granny but she's come out a bit big. Is this any use for restoration? Don't know much about this and finding it hard going.

Welcome to RootsChat Woody.
Looks OK to me ... as you say, a tad on the large size, but if you rename the same picture (because RC now knows you have one with that name ... I just add a number to the name) ... and then re-post it here ...
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,298.0.html
.... the photo experts will love to get to work ! And they will resize if necessary ...
-
Many thanks Lydart, I'll give it a try.

Click Profile at the top of this page > find 'Modify Profile' on the left > click "RootsChat Profile Information" > check 'I will upload my own picture' and search for it (in your own files) > check the pic you want for your avatar is NOT TOO BIG (see Bob's) > upload it > THEN DON'T FORGET TO SCROLL DOWN TO BOTTOM OF page to click 'change profile' ... most important !

Hello, could we mention a problem about Profile photo can't find anywhere else please.
I can copy/paste http code into the main text to see a photo, as above but same photo (same http code) doesn't seem to activate in Profile?
Using Flickr website, I've uploaded photo and copied http code off Properties, then added [img] at both ends. Works fine here (reduced size for profile) but can't insert as profile photo. Mention, clicked on 'I will upload my own picture' and 'Change Profile' at the bottom. Help appreciated.

Welcome to RootsChat Midlanders :)
Have you tried without the [img] code?
Else it should work fine if you upload directly from your hard drive instead of a site (still not using any code)
:)
-
Thank you for welcome Tati, also had a message sent here to notify of your reply. :)
Tried a few more times earlier, also with different photos and codes but no luck yet. We write to other websites and usually add photos this way, so a bit puzzled at the moment. As you suggested, also tried without the [img] code.
Is extra software needed to send them directly from the hard drive, or are they already stored there somehow. Thank you again.

Hi Midlanders,
A warm welcome from me too .. :)
To give you an example of how I do it ..
On your profile go to Modify Profile and click onto:
RootsChat Profile Information
Click the button next to I will upload my own picture: then press the Browse button which will take you to the Picture File on your computer.
You should then be able to choose your picture to download for your avatar.
I hope this makes sense .. ?
Pels. :)
-
Hi Midlanders,
you can't load photos to your profile directly from other websites.
You can use any photo you have on your computer, as long as it is under 20 KB and not bigger than 150 x 150 pixels.
Good luck,
Bob
-
Thank you Pels for welcome and comments. Berlin-Bob's also, appreciated. No success yet but a computer friend will have a look in the morning. :)

Just a test ... have browsed the site for several days and decided it's populated by nice, helpful folk and apparently well Moderated ... but the 'clincher' was the Anzac Puzzle thread ... so much goodwill, help and enthusiasm, and the moderator quietly went about their job without being intrusive ... and so here I am :)

Just a quick query. ??? I am trying to attach a photo to a personal message and when I click on 'attach a photograph' the browse line does not appear. So I can't see any way to attach. Am I doing it all wrong?? I have managed to attach photos in the past and it all seemed quite straight forward, but not today. ::)
Thanks,
KateW.
-
Hi Kate
I don't think it is possible to attach a photo to a private message at all.
Kerry

Hi Kerry,
Thanks, that would explain it!! ::) The person I'm trying to send it to has since sent me his email address so I'll send it direct,
Thanks anyway - I'll know in future.

I'd love to have this photo restored, but a bit worried about resizing, so I'll have a bash on this for a little practice
