Hi Steve:
Not sure if you have this info from the 1851 census but here it is anyway:
Z13 BALLYLORAN TOWNLAND
JAMES GAULT /HEAD/M/35//LABOURER/ANT/
ELIZA GAULT /WIFE/M//27/NONE/ANT/
MARY GAULT /DAUGHTER/U//5/NONE/ANT/
JAMES GAULT /SON/U/1//NONE/ANT/
PEGGY MCCLEAN /LODGER/W//72/NONE/ANT/
PEGGY GAULT /LODGER/U//28/NONE/ANT/
MARTHA HOPKINS /LODGER/U//12/NONE/ANT/

Here is a link to a memorial to Lt. Gault, son of John Gault, Larne
http://larne-in-ww1.irishgenealogy.net/larne_war_mem_GAULT_A%20A.html

It looks like Larne might be the area where the name is more common.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Pat and Annie...

I have found some of them
.......

Ballymather lower town land Killead (1851)

Samuel Galt  head  grocer  age 42 Antrim
Agnes Galt wife age 36
Thomas Galt son 6
James Galt son 5 our g g grandfather married Elizabeth Boyd
Mary Jane Galt  2

Samuel being a grocer fits in with James and Elizabeth's marriage cert but family lore puts their shop between Ballyhenry and Carnmoney also the spelling of Gault can change to Galt then back again.

Not found out what happened to the other siblings either but they could have gone abroad or even more been born  or died:-\

Thank you both for helping ...most appreciated...........as this is one of two brick walls we have

Hi. the Gaults have been in Ulster a long time. From my own family history:-

"The Rev John Grahams 'Derriana' published in 1823 describes a statement from citizens of Coleraine
dated 3rd Feb 1690 which commends the behaviour of Michelburns regiment in the town. Amongst the
signatories are Hugh #1 Bankhead. James Ousteau and John G ........ (illegible)."

and from the Minutes of the Ulster Synod

"On Sept 30th 1691 Hugh #1 Bankhead is recorded as a commissioner from Coleraine together with James
Ousteau and John Gault."

This Hugh's son, another Hugh, married an Elizabeth Gault (Will of Hugh senior dated 4/3/1718)

The same will records Elizabeth Hayland, 2nd wife of Robert Gault of Edindarroc. (Benham's abstracts)

The Bankhead's and Gaults inter-married regularly in Ayrshire before coming to Ulster but I have found no repeat performance in Ulster. I grew up in Banbridge, Co Down and actually went to school with a Linda Gault there in the 1960s

Regards

Matt

Hi, It's been a while since I've been on here, and have got back on the trail of searching my great grandmothers life. Just read all the comments here and was wondering if there is a connection.

My grandfather John McNeil Jenkins, my gr grandmother Eliza Jenkins born 1865, single mother I believe.

I believe her father was a William Junkin (b. 1836ish) married to an Elizabeth Gault (b.1840ish)

Just trying to trace my granddads father as I don't believe Eliza Jenkins married.

Hi
Impossible to find your Grandfather's father if he was not names on the birth certificate.

Elizabeth Jenkins (Junkin) her parents William Junkin and Eliza Galt her siblings Patrick William Agnes David.

Elizabeth Galt   her parents William Galt and Elizabeth Boyd

William Galt(Gault) buried Glynn right on the edge by the road.
Interestingly McNeil's buried not far away on the edge by the road.

Still looking for Junkin graves if you could point me in a direction to look please.

Hi,

I have the siblings as William, Agnes, David & Robert, but not Patrick.

Their father William (b. ca 1836) and I believe the grandfather may have also been William Junkin b. ca 1801). (so many hard to decipher). Ballynure cemetery.

I believe Robert died quite young. Agnes married James Moore in 1889. I remember meeting William Moore as a young child, a farmer from the Ballynure area.

I know the name changed to Jenkins for some reason, so it could be William & David Jenkins on the 01/11 census.

Hi again

Elizabeth Junkin(Jenkins) one of her siblings were Patrick, I got that from William Gaults will which is on line now. Patrick could have died young or went abroad.

Junkin's are Larne , Ballynure, Raloo, Carickfurgus ,Carnmoney
I shall continue to look.

Hi Stevenson,

The reason for the research is to find out about my gr grandmothers (Elizabeth Jenkins/Junkin) life.

There is an Elizabeth Junkin(Gault) married to a Thomas Smyth in Antrim in 1872. I find it hard to believe this could be her .......aged 7 "IF" the dates are correct.

I also found this in the 1901 census: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Larne/Hope_Street/995970/

Lily Smith aged 7, Lizzie Jenkins aged 27, David Jenkins 26.
Was wondering if there is any connection.

Many Thanks

Post by: stevenson on Thursday 15 May 14 14:40 BST (UK)
Ummm.........

In William Galts will he leaves the house in Ballylessen to his daughter Elizabeth Jenkin......if you look in proni on line, this home then goes to Thomas Smyth in 1895 it then goes to someone else.
Thomas Smyth's will is on line he died 4/12/1894 naming children and wife Elizabeth.

Think you need to get marriage details to the 1872 marriage to see if Elizabeth was a widow, it looks like Elizabeth remarried after William Junkin dies.

1901 census does look like Elizabeth(the later unmarried mother) and her brother.....but who is Lilly...could she be a daughter from their mother's second marriage.....but their mother would have been in her very late fifties by then......

I am still ummmmming......

Hi,

It is a mystery and an even larger one now. My gr grandmother was born in 1865 so the1901 census Lizzie Jenkins aged 27 doesn't match.  William Junkin my gr gr grandfather married Eliza Gault (Galt).  It maybe a William Junkin death in 1895 that is my gr gr grandfather which, would tie in with leaving the house to Elizabeth Jenkin in 1895.... But you state William Galt leaves house to Elizabeth Jenkin? Thomas Smyth you said dies in 1894.....how can a house be left to someone who is dead 1 year?

Think this is more than umming.....  Many thanks for your input!
Title: Re: GAULT Ireland all dates
Post by: stevenson on Saturday 17 May 14 15:31 BST (UK)
Sorry did not make myself clear.

William Galt(married to Elizabeth Boyd )buried in Glyn left his daughter Elizabeth Junkin nee Gault the house in Ballylesson ,looks like she married again same year her father died to Thomas Smyth
But you would need to get that marriage details to confirm that.(it would say she was a widow)

The William Junkin of Raloo who died in 1894....his wife was Margaret...and had been since the 1840s ,his father is buried in Carrickfurgus and his grandfather in old Raloo........This is not the William married to Elizabeth Gault.

The Junkins/Jenkins buried  Ballynure  which one do you think is yours.

What information do you have that you know is 100% correct.

Hi Steve,

The information that I have is that my gr grandmother and grandfather are on the 1911 census in Napier street, Belfast. I know 100% that she was born 23/03/1865 and her father was William Junkin. The name changed to Jenkins sometime after, reasons unknown. William was married to Elizabeth Gault from the Toreagh area which as I'm sure you know is around the Raloo, Glynn area.

This was confirmed many years ago through my granddad's cousin William Moore (b.1903) who was the son of Agnes Junkin/Jenkins married to James Moore. From what I know from my grandfather he had 1 aunt Agnes, and 2 uncles, William & David. The only contact that my grandfather had with that side of the family when I was growing up was with William Moore.

The McNeil part of my grandfathers name (John McNeil Jenkins b. Larne 5/03/1903) was rumoured to be from his father, but this was never confirmed. His mother remarried on 23/12/1921 to a Joe Wilson (b. 01/03/1877, father Robert Wilson/mother Elizabeth Douther).

Hi

I have been trying to work out the various how the various Gault families in Antrim connect to my Wiley family of Templepatrick. The one I am currently most familiar with is that of Alexander Gault of Doagh and his wife Ellen Murdoch.

Kilbride Burials:
Alexander Gault   Date of Death: 02/02/1883
Age: 78
Ellen Gault (nee Murdoch)
Wife of Alexander    Date of Death: 22/08/1894
Age: 84
James Gault      Date of Death: 20/09/1906
   Age: 58

James Gault above (of Cogrey) married Margaret Ferguson daughter of James Ferguson & Elizabeth Wiley.

Jane Gault (c1842-1893), dau of Alexander,  married John Ferguson of Annandale. John was a brother of James Ferguson

John Gault (c1846-1926) timber merchant of Larne & presumed brother of Jane (one of her executors) married Elizabeth McClinton

Robert Gault (c1857-1921) another executor of Jane's & also a presumed brother was a flax merchant.

Ellen Murdoch was the sister of Mary Murdoch who married William Alexander of Ballymather. Mary Alexander's Will names all four of the above Gaults and her sister Ellen.

One more unconfirmed connection is Margaret Gault, wife of John Ferguson of Fourmileburn and mother of James Ferguson and John Ferguson. I suspect she may have been a sister of Alexander Gault of Doagh but the only hint I have to confirm that is that an Alexander Gault was a witness to her will.

While trying to find how these various Gaults above were connected I also looked at the Rickamore Gault family. William Gault of Rickamore d 30 Nov 1892 and listed sons James, Alexander, Samuel, William and Edward (in the USA) in his Will. Also named John H Gault of Belfast as one of his executors. John Henry Gault of Clifton Park (who died 15 Sep 1915) was also named as a cousin in the Will of John Gault  of Tennant St Belfast (spirit grocer) who died 23 Feb 1899. I have not found any connection between the Doagh Gaults and the Templepatrick Gaults but that doesn't mean there was no connection.

I have an interest in one other Gault family of Lisnevenagh & Quarter Lenagh. They connect to my Lisnevenagh Kennedy family.

Cheers

Linda

Looking for information on a John Gault a soldier in 1915/1916 aged 26 at that time.
The name Armour may be in his line.
He is listed as the father of a child who died in Belfast during 1916.

Did he die during war time.
Did he marry.
Any info would be great.

The child died on 23rd Jan 1916, aged 2years 3 months. He was named on the death Certificate as James Armour Gault Somerville.
In the section for parent there is Child of John Gault Soldier and what looks like 26 in brackets.
This info has a line through it, and it now reads Child of Lizzie Somerville.

Lizzie Somerville was the married name of Elizabeth Armstrong who married James Somerville on 19th Dec 1910.

it appears that a child was born some years later to a James McGranaghan and Elizabeth (formerly Armstrong). This child grew up and died in Canada, but her name on the headstone is Somerville.

clear as mud , I know

My Gaults are the ones detailed by Imgnz above - from the Parkgate/Doagh areas.  Do you know where your Hugh is said to have been from in the marriage record?

I've only got notes on two Hugh Gaults:

Hugh Gault (c1757-1805), headstone in Rashee Old Graveyard: Here lyeth the Body of Hugh Gault who departed this life the 3d October 1805 aged 48 years.

Hugh Galt (d. c1857).  He had land in Dunamoy and was mentioned in notices from the Landed Estates Court in 1856 (I guess he was in debt?).  By 1858 he was "the late Hugh Galt."  His son was Alexander Gault, a spirit dealer of 8 Frederick Street, Belfast.

Alexander's first wife, Eliza, died of consumption on the 14th September 1854, aged 31.  His second wife (whom he married on 8th Jan 1855) was Matilda Jane Palmer.  Alexander died at 96, Main Street, Larne on 28th Jan 1892 aged 72.  Matilda died at 112, Main Street, Larne on 2nd June 1910 aged 74.

Thank you MFGilbert for your response. I have no further details from the marriage certificate, it just said the fathers name as Hugh, as posted in my first note. But the dates for the Rashee headstone are a possibility. Will work about that and see if I can get a connection. As well, the son Alexander a spirit dealer fits with John Sinclair Todd, as he too was a spirit dealer, perhaps that is how he met Hugh's daughter Jane....then again there were probably a lot of spirit dealers in Ireland?

Steve,

Just a question, you say here that James Gault married Elizabeth Boyd. You also have my GGG grandfather William Gault (Galt) (1803 - 1871) marrying an Elizabeth Boyd. Is there any connection or just a coincidence??

Also, I thought Hugh Gault was born c.1783 and maybe is the father of William (1803), Alexander (1805) & Samuel (1809)......just a thought!

Post by: Gilby on Monday 02 November 15 20:51 GMT (UK)
I made some progress on my own Galts over the weekend.

My gggg grandmother Margaret Galt married John Ferguson.  She died in 1869 and in her will she mentions her sister Mary Price and brother James Galt.

Mary Price (née Galt) died in 1874 and she also mentions their brother, but names him as “James Galt of Clareview, Ballyclare.”

James Galt married Mrs Martha Saunderson (née Mahood) in 1858:

[Northern Whig, 7 Jun 1858]
GAULT-SAUNDERSON: June 3, at the Presbyterian Church, Carrickfergus, by the Rev. Robert McCully, James Gault, Esq., Airview, Ballyclare, to Mrs. Saunderson, Ballyclare.

They had at least four daughters, the last of whom made it into the civil registrations.  Margaret Galt was born on the 30th Jan 1866 (parents Galt and Mahood) and died in 1867:

[BMN 8 May 1867]
April 27, at Clareview, Ballyclare, Maggie, fourth daughter of Mr. James Gault, aged 15 months.

This confirms that James Galt of Clareview is the same person as James Gault of Airview.  And going back to his marriage cert, James’ father was also called James.  So I now have:

James Galt m? and had issue:
1. Margaret Galt (1 Mar 1801 – 18 Dec 1869) m. John Ferguson
2. Mary Galt (c1812 – 10 Mar 1874) m. Hugh Price
3. James Galt (c1821 – 10 Mar 1905) m. Martha Saunderson/Mahood

Plenty of room for other siblings.

The will of James Galt who died in 1905 leaves provision for a headstone to be erected over his grave in Kilbride.  Unfortunately (going by the discovereverafter website) it looks like there is no headstone there now, if there ever was one.  However, the plot is right next to the other Galt/Gault graves beside the mausoleum, including Alexander Galt (c1805-1883) who married Ellen Murdoch.

To Mojo1970,

I had not previously looked for Gault Wills under GALT. When I did, I saw the Will of William GALT of Craignaboy who died 17 Mar 1871.

This is the William who names his wife as Elizabeth nee Boyd. William also names his daughter Elizabeth Jenkins and then a list of what looks to be her children. The first of these is Patrick William. I cannot see a comma between the name Patrick and Wiliam so it may be that Agnes Moores brother William was actually Patrick William. The other names are Elizabeth, Agnes, and David.

Later in the will William also names three daughters (sisters of Elizabeth Jenkins). Jane Calwell wife of Edward Calwell, Isabella Calwell, wife of Robert Calwell, and Sarah McMurtry wife of David McMurtry.

In addition William Galt names two brothers of Elizabeth Jenkins, James Galt of Craignaboy and Hugh Galt.

Cheers

Another Galt to add to the Doagh family.

John Galt of Doagh who died 23 Feb 1860 also names his sister Mary Rice and leaves a sum of money for her via his brother Alexander Galt, grocer of Doagh. The bulk of his estate however goes to Alexander's son William. Alexander is the executor of this will.

So this brings both Alexander Gault of Doagh b 1805 and John who died 1860 into the family of James Gault/Galt of Doagh, father of Margaret, James and Mary as already listed by MFGilbert.

It also is interesting that Alexander Gault of Doagh was a grocer and his wife's sister Mary Alexander nee Murdoch lived in Ballymather. Maybe some connection to Samuel Galt b c1809 grocer of Ballymather.

Cheers

Linda

Thanks Hallmark.  On the topic of Coleraine Gaults:

[Belfast Newsletter, 20-24 April 1799]
On Wednesday evening, Mr. Robert Gault, of Colerain, County Derry, to Miss Margaret Scott, daughter of the Revd. Wm. Scott, Rector of Ballyrashane -- A young lady possessed of every quality to make the marriage state truly happy.

From references to these Gaults in the newspapers it seems they were a family of merchants for several generations.

Templepatrick Galts/Gaults

There is a microfilm at PRONI which is supposed to have family documents, including some genealogical notes (1773-1820), of the Galt and Cunningham families of Templepatrick (MIC32/1).  I haven’t seen any definite link between that family and the Galts/Gaults of Doagh, but I’m hoping the above might hint at an answer.

Belfast Newsletter, 21st Feb 1837:
On the 14th inst. Mr. James Galt, formerly of Templepatrick, aged 82 years.

Belfast Newsletter, 14th Mar 1837:
On the 12th ult. in the 45th year of his age, William Galt.  In the fate of this unfortunate man, there is something truly worthy of record, as a warning to young men entering on the arena of life.  He was a native of Templepatrick, in the county of Antrim- his father belonged to the highest class of farmers, but having taken a prominent part in the unfortunate troubles of 1798, he was likely to become a sufferer, when a sudden death relieved him from a state of apprehension and danger.  On his death-bed he left the care of his son, the subject of this notice, on his mother, who brought him up in the most tender manner and bestowed upon him a liberal education. -- William was brought up under the idea that he would possess the great wealth of his grand-mother; but in this he was disappointed by her sudden death.  A young man brought up to the highest expectations, at once thrown upon his own resources he gave way to despondency, and indulged in dissipation, mixing too frequently with the lowest company. -- He spent several of the latter years of his life in Belfast, and during the rigour of the last winter, fell into a fever, which arose from destitution and hardship.  He was removed to the Fever Hospital, where he escaped from all his earthly sufferings.

And then this would be the right age/date to be his father, though I don’t think it is certain:

Belfast Newsletter, 24th Aug 1798:
In this town, on Sunday the 19th inst. in the 52nd year of his age, Mr. William Galt, formerly of Templepatrick, but for some time past settled in this place. -- He was remarkable through life for strict integrity in his dealings and friendly disposition, and his now feelingly lamented not only by his afflicted relations, but also a very numerous acquaintance.

The grave of James Galt (c1758-1842) is beside the grave of William Galt of Doagh who founded the Doagh reading societies and supposedly the first Sunday school in Ireland.  William died in 1812 aged 60, but his headstone was not erected until 1842 – possibly put up at the same time as James’.

Belfast Newsletter, 10th Jan 1812:
In Doagh, on the 7th instant, Mr. Wm. Galt, aged 60 years; a man through life beloved and respected.  A principal object with him was the instruction of the rising generations, justly conceiving, that as knowledge increased, vice would disappear.  He formed a Book Society in the year 1770, and another in 1780, which included a large proportion of the population round Doagh.  In 1787, he instituted a Sunday school, where from 120 to 160 children at a time received the blessing of education.  An immense concourse of people testified their respect to his memory by attending his funeral.  The body was preceded by the children of the Sunday School, and followed by the brethren of lodge No. 294, of which he was 40 years a member.  Reader, go thou and imitate his example!

I think William and James were probably brothers.  But then that leaves another James Galt (c1749-1825) who is buried a couple of graves to the left, just outside the main Gault enclosure.  This is his gravestone inscription from the UHF:

Sacred to the memory of James Gault who departed this life 8th April 1825 aged 76 years, also Mary his beloved wife who departed this life 19th of January 1838 aged 82 years James Adams departed this life 26th of January 1813 aged 36 years, also Dorothea his beloved wife who departed this life 25th of February 1844 aged 62 years, blessed are the dead that died in the Lord

How strange that this Gault thread had come to my attention recently.
I saw the name and remembered, that as a child I met Charlie and Irene Gault, Charlie stayed with my family for a while in West London in the 1960s approximately. He was a schoolmaster and had been to university at Trinity College in Dublin. We met his children too.

Even stranger, on Saturday I received a card from Charlie's eldest daughter, telling me that her Dad had passed away in July 2015 and that she was keen to let me know.
Charlie was a very clever man and my parents enjoyed his company when they knew him many years ago, unfortunately they are no longer alive.

The card did not have a sender's address so I cannot contact this lady, who I met years ago.
However, I wondered if this information was pertinent to this GAULT thread.
I believe he lived in King's Road in Belfast.
I have googled Charlie's daughter but cannot find any information to get in touch.

Any ideas on contacting her, I could try contacting the undertaker.

Margaret  ;)

Just a little update to this for posterity.  Today I found a headstone next to the above (upside down and moss-covered) where I was just able to make out:

There isn't a townland called Trillick in Co. Antrim (where this thread is and where OP seems to have been looking for connections) so it might be a better idea to start a new topic on the correct board (Fermanagh? Tyrone? Donegal?)

Welcome to Rootschat.  Is this your Robert dying in Manchester?

Liverpool Mercury   25 Mar 1857
March 21, in Upper Brook-street, Manchester, aged 70, Mr. R. Gault, late of Trillick, Ireland.

Do you know if this is Trillick in County Fermanagh or County Donegal, or other?

Hi Stevenson,

We know that William Galt dies in 1871 and leaves house to daughter Elizabeth Jenkins (Gault b.1840), but she re-marries a Thomas Smyth in 1872 and then this house goes too their son (also Thomas b. 1873) when Thomas senior died in 1894. William Junkin (Toreagh) dies in 1894 and leaves estate and items to children Agnes, William & Robert. In 1901 Elizabeth & David Jenkins in Larne with Lily Smyth.

Is it possible of such a coincidence that a William Junkin from Toreagh, not married to Elizabeth Gault has children of the same names and approx. same age range. I believed he died in 1871, but now am not sure, will keep searching.

There is an Elizabeth Smyth dies in Feb 1896, just wondering if this is my Elizabeth Jenkins Gault and how Lily ended up with the two Jenkins' in Larne? David Jenkins in 1911 census with the Gault family, Craiganboy Glynn. This would be family of James Gault, Elizabeth Smyth's (Gault) brother.

I do know that my William Junkin is from the Toreagh/Raloo area.

Terry

Hi!
Does anyone have any information about Alexander Gault, born 1829? I thought it was the same Alexander previously posted here, from Doagh, but he was married to Jane (Senor sp?) Gault, b. 1833?.

I believe he left Ireland and arrived in New York in 1849. He could he be from Keenaghan, but not sure how to confirm. He had 4 children, and eventually became the Mayor of Nevada City, California.  :) Id like to find out more, or pointed in the right direction, on how to find my roots in Ireland. Thanks.  :)

You would need to check to see what church records survive (not all survive, of those that do not all are online) but probably not many would go back to 1820s. Do you know what religion Alexander Gault might have been?

Thank you for the response,  aghadowey. I'm really not sure. There were 3 Alexander Gaults born in Ireland around the same time, going by process of elimination.

I found an article of  Alexander Gault in Nevada City, California, which lists him as a church officer at Trinity Episcopal Church in 1880.

I’m just getting started with attempting to find deeper roots in Ireland. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
