Title: Andrew (Jack) Carson
Post by: Ian Moseley on Friday 18 April 08 17:50 BST (UK)
I am trying to find out some information about a first cousin of my fathers, she was Cissie Moseley her proper name might have been Catherine May Moseley.

She married Andrew M J Carson he was born in South Africa about 1890 and they supposedly married in Madras India in 1926 ?

Jack owned a Circus in India and reside at Palm Grove Rd Coimbatore

Andrew M J Carson death registered at Kensington London July 1962 aged 72

Died on 9th July 1962, aged 72, at his home 263 Old Brompton Road, London SW5.  His funeral was at Golders Green Crematorium, on 13th July

Andrew Carson was known as Jack Carson and for the later years of his life was Chief Eagle Eye with Chipperfields Circus.

I am trying to find out more information about Jack at his address in London and also if there are any records for MI's for Golders Green Crematorium or any other records, maybe newspaper records?

Regards,
Ian.

Hi Ian,

Have you looked at old copies of World Fair (first published in 1904)?

It should have a page about circus people and sometimes contains obituaires for fairground or circus people.

Hi Ian,

I have been doing research on my husbands and my family and your enquiry came up about Andrew (Jack) Carson.
After reading all your details on him to my mother in law (in south Africa)...she said yes, that does sound like him. Andrew was her uncle.
We know he was in the circus...have photo's of him dressed up like "Buffalo Bill". He was in India and did finally live in London where he died.
His real name was Andrew Scholtz and he changed it to Jack Carson at some stage
His parents were: Jacobus Johannes Banto SCHOLTZ and Elizabeth Jacoba Berrindina (nee Hurling) SCHOLTZ.
his siblings were: Annie, Christina Georgina, Elizabeth Jacoba, Henry and Andrew SCHOLTZ.
Hope this proves to be helpfull.

Hi Ian,

I came across a letter written by Jack Carson sometime in the 1940s I think, as there was a date but no year. My Grand uncle had a photographic business in Dundalk Ireland.
The 'Chief' requested 2000 copies of his photograph ASAP COD.
I have the letter and photo sent when he worked with Chipperfields, I would be interested in any information  associated wiht the above.

Liam.

Hi Liam,

Andrew/Jack was my mother in laws uncle. He was born in Cape Town South Africa April 5, 1894 as Andrew Scholtz. He died in London in 1972.
When he joined the circus he changed his name to Jack Carson.
There is a cousin in England Medland Reynolds that has the family bible with all sorts of info in it but so far we haven't been able to make contact with him.
When Jack was alive he used to visit Medland's mom Sylvia in England...she was his cousin.
I had given the research a break for a few months as it was consuming my life... maybe I should carry on with it again.

Jennifer

Ian,
My best friend is Jack Carson's granddaughter. She sent you a message not too long ago. She said she has not gotten a response. She has a lot of photographs of her grandfather and people he associated with. Andrew Micheal Carson was also an actor. He played a small part in the movie Circus Horrors. He performed as Chief Eagle Eye in the movie. He played small parts in other English movies as well. However, according to his daughter, who lives with my friend, Jack Carson was married to her mother during the time that you think he was married to Cissy. It is the same Jack Carson. Other things line up, but some things do not. If you want more information, let me know, I could ask his daughter. She is getting up in age, but she still remembers things. She has a lot of letters and photos of her father. Andrew Micheal Jack Carson. (Eagle Eye)

Sincerely,
Bonnie

googling him comes up with the following [shrunk] url

Hi, I understand your best friend's grandmother is Jaqueline, daughter of Jack Carson and . My grandmother was born Beryl Decima Hutchins in India in 1908. In 1925 she ran away from an arranged marriage and joined a 'Carsons Circus' she had a daughter Jaqueline. We (myself, my mum and her brother) have been trying to find Jaqueline, could the search be complete?!

I am hopeful that this email reaches you since I am looking at an archive search that you carried out dated December 24th 2007.

My Mother Beryl Decima Hutchins worked for Carson’s American Circus in the late 1920’s
Whilst at the Circus she had a child called Jackie (Jacqueline) with Jack Carson.

She had jumped ship en route to Shanghai while sailing to become engaged to Sir Victor Sassoon who was quite a lot older than her and she didn’t want any part in it. After jumping ship she joined the Circus.

From what I understand her Father was a Turf Accountant and had connections with Sir Victor through the Turf Club in Bombay.

Prior to this she had been born in India and had been sent to England and Switzerland for her education.

Her Fathers name was Wilfred Hutchins and her Mother was Jessie and they lived in Poona south of Bombay.

My Father met my Mother at a Tennis Tournament in Calcutta. My grandather was a Director of Rowe and Company in Rangoon Burma.
They fell in love were married in Calcutta and my Father recalled meeting Jackie before they returned to England. I do have pictures of her as a baby and as a young child.

I was born in 1933 unfortunately the marriage didn’t work out and my  mother returned to India shortly before WWII.

My Mother had two more children Peter and Tessa, Peter was born in England and Tessa in India.
At the time of the Raj the family moved to Bulawayo Rhodesia and my Mother and John Pendrell Yates flew to Capetown and were married in 1945 as they were unable to connect with my Father during WWII.

I was fortunate to locate my half brother Peter my Mother and sister through the Salvation Army here in Canada in the late 1980’s at the age o fifty eight. Peter has since unfortunately passed on, but I am in contact with my half sister Tessa and family.
on a regular basis, and both she and Peter and other members of the family have visited us here in Canada.

After finding my Mother and Peter and Tessa I set my sights on trying to find Jackie.
Today I received an email from Sam Tessa’s daughter saying that she thinks she has found Jackie and that she was alive a year ago but starting to develop Alzheimers  and dementia, and that she has a daughter Called Voyella Phillips.

I don’t know where you fit into all this as a best friend but there must be some connection because the timeline makes sense and I would dearly love to connect with you on this matter before I am too old to travel.

Yours very Truly,
