I heard some years ago that a relative married a half-brother of Adolph Hitler.
Her name was Bridget Dowling born about 1892 in Dublin.
Bridget met Alois Hitler when he was working as a waiter in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin. They eloped to London where they married in June 1910.
Bridget was 18 and Alois was 27
Their son William Patrick Hitler was born in 1911.
If any reader knows who were the parents or siblings of Bridgets' father William Dowling, I will be very interested.
-
there are some details on Bridget here :

Thanks Shane,
I have seen all that, and I have the book which was written by Bridget, but it gives no information about her ancestors other than her father, William.
I am trying to find out how she is connected to my grandfather, Patrick Dowling.
-
Bridget's birth certificate should list her parents' names and their marriage certificate should list their fathers' names and occupations, etc.
-
assuming that the birth date is correct on the Wikipedia page then I'd say this is the best match for her birth cert..
Name: Bridget Dowling
Registration district: Dublin South
Record type: BIRTHS
Registration date - quarter and year: Jul - Sep 1891
Volume: 2
Page: 568
her London marriage and birth of son William appear on freebmd

Thanks Aghadowey and Shane,
I will order Bridgets' birth certificate.
The certificates for her marriage to Alois, and the birth of her son William Patrick are reproduced in her book.
-
Hello anyone who is interested.
Bridgets' birth certificate arrived today almost a month after I ordered it.
She was born in Kilnamanagh, Tallaght, South Dublin 3rd July 1891.
Father William Dowling, Kilnamanagh, labourer.
Mothers mark Eliza Renolds. (that name is usually spelled Reynolds)
I hope to find the marriage of William and Eliza in the Register Office when I go to Dublin next week, and try to find out if William was a brother of my grandfather Patrick Dowling.
Patrick had 8 siblings and 6 were still alive in 1911.
Alicia I think didn't marry.
Mary married a Mr. Purtell
Kathleen married a man whose name I don't know.
Jenny I think was unmarried.
I don't know the names of the other 4 siblings, and would love to hear from anyone who might know about them.

Hello again.
I have been to the Register Office in Dublin since my last post and was unable to find the marriage of Bridget Dowling's parents.
I am still trying to find out if Bridget's father William was a brother of my grandfather Patrick Dowling.
I know from the 1911 census that my great-grandfather Richard Dowling had 9 children born alive and 7 still living. He lived in Essex St when some or all of his children were born.
Not sure if Patrick was the eldest but younger than him was Alicia unmarried and Thomas married to Bridget Buckley. Mary married Laurence Purtell and I think she died before 1911.
I also found a baptism record for Margaret but don't know what became of her.
The above five are the only children of Richard that I have records for, so still not sure if there was a William. I have no proof of Kathleen or Jenny.
Most of the family members were bookbinders or printers and Patrick was a commission agent, which I am told is another name for a turf accountant.
This is a shot in the dark but if anyone can fill in the blanks about the above family I will be very grateful.

Thanks Shane.
I was hoping you would notice my post. I know you are an expert on all things in Dublin.

Hi Shane, How are you? I am Evelyn's sister (Dor Dowling), we know that some Dowling relatives were living in 17 Little Britten St. in 1901 and that there was also a printing works in that same building. There may have been some connection. Some other bookbinder/compositor Dowling relatives were also living in 83, Seville Place. In case that info would help the search.

Alois Hitler lived for a time in Toxeth area of Liverpool.

Hitlers father , was Alios Schickelgruber
There is a vast amount on this subject available in Liverpool records.

Hello Cassandra.
Thank you for your message.
I had a quick look at the Liverpool site. It is very interesting and it would take quite a while to read it. I will have to leave it for later.
I have a copy of the the Memoirs of Bridget Hitler. I read it a few years ago before I was bitten with this genealogy bug. Must read it again soon.
In the meantime I am trying to find out if Bridget's father William was a brother of my grandfather.
This rumour has been in our family for a number of years but so far I have not been able to find evidence to prove it.

According to a feature in the Echo of November 18 1999, Bridget's paternal grandparents were Martin and Elizabeth Dowling from Cookstown.
-
I did a bit of research on this family a while back and have some details filed away.
Alois Hitler married Bridget Elizabeth Dowling in Marylebone register office on 3 June 1910. They subsequently moved to Liverpool and lived at 102 Upper Stanhope Street where their son William Patrick Hitler was born on 12 March 1911. The marriage and birth certificates can be viewed on Mike Royden's website
http://www.btinternet.com/~m.royden/mrlhp/local/hitlerinliverpool/hitlerinliverpool.htm
At the time I couldn't find the family in the 1911 census but I'll have another look.
-
OK I have now found them in 1911 boarding at 102 Upper Stanhope Street. Anton and Cissie Hitler, according to the transcript.
-
Hello all.
Many thanks. I saw your posts more than an hour ago but could not reply as I had to cook a meal for my poor neglected husband. He is happy now and watching the news so I can continue.
Shane.
Thank you for your time and trouble.
That is my grandfather Patrick Dowling. He lived in East Essex Street at the time of his first marriage and lived in Rathgar for a while before moving to Templeogue before 1901.
I don't know about William A. He could possibly be a brother or an uncle of Patrick.
Patrick's father Richard Dowling appears in the 1911 census as a retired book-binder born in Meath and living with him is his daughter Alicia whose occupation is book folder.
Richards son Thomas is a book-binder
Richards daughter Mary was married to Laurence Purtell a printer.
I don't yet know the names or occupations of Richard's remaining children, but there is a strong connection to a printing business and a family story that they printed for Arthur Griffith.
Could I prevail on you to see if there is a printing works in Little Britain Street?
Thanks,
Evelyn

Hello Shaun.
Thanks.
That is very interesting.
In reply to your first post. If that is correct Bridget Hitlers' father was not a brother of my grandfather Patrick Dowling. However, it is possible that Martin Dowling could be his uncle.
I don't know anything about my great-grandfather Richard before he moved to Dublin from Meath, nor do I know in what part of Meath he was born or if he had any siblings. Richards wife was Mary Brady, and all I know about her is that her father was Thomas Brady. These names might ring a bell with somebody reading this.
I haven't looked at Mike Roydens' site yet, and many thanks for the link. I look forward to seeing it later.
It is so kind of you to look at the 1911 census for me.
Alois must have adjusted his name to suit his new position, and Bridget says in her memoirs that
he always called her Cece after a portrait of St. Cecilia which he particularly admired.
A coincidence. I have a son Shane and a grandson Séan.

Hello again Shaun.
I have just found a reference to Stanhope street in Bridgets memoirs.
She said that when Adolph came to visit them in Liverpool they were living in a pleasant three-roomed flat in 102 Stanhope St.

The Bridget Dowling & Alois Hitler story is fascinating and I have tried to find a link with my Dublin Dowlings and failed as well.
i think there is an error on Bridget's 1891 birth certificate which gives her mother as Eliza Renolds. Her mother was more likely 'Bridget Reynolds'. The irish genealogy website has a marriage of William Dowling of Kilnamanagh to Bridget Reynolds of Ballymount at Clondalkin in 1890. This gives his parents as 'Martin & Elizabeth'. William & Bridget appear with their 4 daughters in the 1901 census at Flemings Place, Dublin, William aged 34 and born in Co Kildare. the wikipedia entry on the family suggests he came from Crookstown near Athy. rootsireland has a baptism for William to Martin & Eliza Dowling at Athy in 1867, and their marriage in 1866.

Hi Guys
Really interested in these posts, I to was lead to believe our Dowlings were related but I have different names,
Mgg James Dowling b1869 Co Kildare was meant to be the brother of William Dowling B1867 children of Patrick Dowling and ? Mary Nolan.
That is why Bridget called her son William Patrick after her father and grandfather??
I think I need to go back to drawing board.

Hello,
I created an account here just to pass on the following information about an ancestor of mine, which may be helpful to you.
I have an Eliza(beth) Dowling, b. around 1840s and d. after 1911. She married Joseph Nulty from Co. Meath in 1870 in or around Balbriggan, which is in Co. Dublin near the Co. Meath line (the civil registration location is Balrothery). I am not sure who her parents are yet because I've just found the registration index record of the marriage, so I haven't ordered the microfilm. If you visit the records office in Dublin, the book is year 1870-volume 17-page 465.
Seven children followed, then the family moved to Dublin city around 1885. Seven more children were born in Dublin. In 1885 - 1887 the family lived at 115 Upper Dorset St.; in 1888 at 6 N. Rutland Pl.; in 1890-1891 at 27 William Pl.; 1895 at 11 William Pl.; in 1901 at 3 Margaret Ave.; and in 1911 at 8 Rutland Pl.

Just seen this Post and the info I believe is my Great Grandfather Joseph Nulty as have found the info in the census 1901/11 with the address etc. the same. My Granny Elizabeth Nulty O'Malley I believe was the eldest in the Family and was married 1898

Hello Evelyn,
I see you were trying to find out if your grandfather Patrick Dowling was related to Bridget Hitler nee Dowling.
I'm trying to find out the very same thing. Do we maybe have the same grandfather? (Patrick, DOB I think was 5th April 1864)

Hi, I have just come across this site and wonder if you ever found the answer to your questions. I believe my great grandfather was the brother of Bridget's Father William and have recently started to look into the family history. Would love to know more!

I hope that the following might be of interest
The Irish Times (19th June 1896 at Page 7) shows that Patrick Dowling was charged with using No.38 Drury Street for gaming purposes. (He is entered in Slaters Directory 1894 as a Commission Agent there)
At 83 Seville Place ,The Irish Times (25th January 1875 at Page 3 ) shows Mr C.Dowling as a Prizewinner. An advertisement on Page 7 in the edition for 3rd September 1877 refers to a Joseph W.Dowling there. In Thoms Directory 1911 there is an entry there for Joseph Dowling.
At 1 Little Britain Street ,The Irish Times (4th January 1860 Police Intelligence Column) Julia Dowling is shown as the victim of a criminal act. Shaws Pictorial Directory 1850 shows a James Dowling (Dairy) at the same address.

Hi Leadjog. Thanks for your interest. It's a long time since I asked that question and still have not found a connection to my Dowling family. I have almost given up as I'm now very old and none of my children is interested in genealogy yet.
Thanks also to Felixquaxer and Dathai. I will have a look at the links and let you know if I find anything new.
