Hello Doun

I have BUCHANAN in Dunbarton - Cardross mainly.  They originated in Dumfriesshire and were millers.

I don't know of any Stirlingshire connection though!

Let me know if you think there might be a link.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hello Arranroots and Billy Anderson, I get here every so often, to this site. Billy thanks for the <genuki> site, Ive listed a few names there, I have an elusive ANDERSON in my log pile. a William ANDERSON; who married Janet STEWART 1839 in Kilmadock.

Arranroots;; I have several sources that give septs of Buchanan, in Ireland, Perthshire, Stirlingshire, Dunbartonshire,
and a couple of other places, I find William of Auchmars work to be quite reliable, and would like to be young enough to travel to Scotland and check some of the writs he quotes from.

Hi,

I've unearthed a possible Buchanan link in Killearn.

My Scottish roots research to date has centred on Dalry in Ayr. One line is John ROY b.abt 1773. It looks like a ROY family came to Dalry from Killearn via Glasgow. In the 1851 census one of the children, Janet [ROY] Millar gives her birthplace as Killearn abt 1779/80.

Deduction brings me to James ROY who married Margarrat YUILL in Killearn in 1767.

I think Margarrat's parents were Thomas YUILL and Elisabeth BUCHANAN. Their Marriage banns were read in Fintry 26 May 1741 and Killearn 29 May 1741. For Elisabeth IGI records 'of Ballglass Killearn, father John', and a birth abt 1720.  SP has two possible baptisms - 23 April 1721 (parents John Buchanan and Janet Buchanan) and 19 Nov 1721 (parents John Buchanan and Margaret Andesson). If the former her age at marriage was 20, so assuming a birth in 1720 fits. The latter would only have been 19, so an IGI assumption of 'abt 1720' seems unlikely.

I've not got much further as I'm still trying to verify that James Roy and Margarat Yuill are the parents of my 4xgr grandfather in Dalry.

I have some descendents of Ann Buchanan b.1865,  but of course the children have a different surname although they were born in Killearn - one of them married my gt aunt.

@ Doun

The earliest Bryce I have is my ggg grandfather Thomas Bryce who is in the Dalry (Ayr) PR as a weaver and the natural father of John Bryce (b.1818).

John's mother, Elizabeth Chalmers, was born in 1799, so presumably Thomas was of a similar age. There are no Bryce baptisms in the Dalry PR before John's,  and apart from a farmer in Maybole, no Thomas Bryce baptisms in Ayrshire. So he's an incomer probably born 1795-1800.

There are 26 Thomas Bryce baptisms between 1780 and 1804 in ScotlandsPeople. I've eliminated 13 as potential candidates due to wrong occupation, early death, emigration, or marriage in home parish. He could very well have been Irish.

Do you have any information on a John Robert Buchanan born around 1830s in Loch Lomond . He and his wife Mary Hartle/Hartlowe emigrated to Australia prior to 1874. Any help much appreciated

Just found this thread when searching for BUCHANAN and Carestoun. I've found a Walter Buchanan, born in 1711, child of John Buchanan "of Carestoun" and his spouse Elisabeth Noble. This family seem to move between Old Kilpatrick and Killearn parishes - marriage is Killear 1694, first child baptised in Killearn, then three in Kilpatrick (including an earlier Walter, first-born son), and the remaining six in Killearn including of course Walter.

A witness to the baptism is John Buchanan of Middle Croy.

I'd be very interested to learn of any other people looking at Buchanans in this area. And of course if anyone has further information on this Walter, as I'm attempting to rule him either out or in for 'mine'.

(edited to correct error on marriage)
