Post by: BrnCam on Sunday 12 April 09 22:07 BST (UK)
Hello all,
I'm trying to find out more about a my Great grandmothers brother called Joseph Baird who was born in Downhill, Co. Londonderry on 9th September 1883. He married a Christina in Kirkcaldy in 1910 and had two children, Joseph and Jane.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Brian

Hello Sid,
Are you sure about the details of Joseph. The reason I ask is that the Joseph I'm trying to trace comes from Northern Ireland. He was born not far from me at a place called Downhill on the 9th September 1883. He married a Christina Dewar in Kirkcaldy and had two children Joseph and Jane. I think his son Joseph might have been killed during WWII.
I only came across Joseph recently and the Kirkcaldy connection would be uncanny since I have relatives living there now.
Regards,
Brian

Hello Sid,
The Joseph I'm trying to trace was born on the 9th September 1883 to a Joseph Baird & Eliza McCarron of Downhill Co. Londonderry. He joined the army in 1902 and from his service record I see he enlisted to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in Glasgow that year. His age is given as 19 and his next of kin was his father Joseph of Downhill. His marriage details on his service record say he was married to a Christina Thompson (I think thats what it says) Dewar at Kirkcaldy 13/10/10. There is an address that looks like 23 Mid St. He has a son called Joseph born on the 17/9/12 Kirkcaldy and a daughter Jane born 28/10/13. They were both baptised by the Rev. D L Francis Raith Parish Church.
There are a lot of similarities between the family you decribe in your first post and the one I'm trying to trace. Do you think we could still be talking about the same family?

Regards,
Brian

Hello to all the Baird & families etc. I have some details of my Mother’s side of the family. Mum’s name was Jane Crichton Baird she was born in Kirkcaldy on 20th March 1936. She also had a brother Alexander Joseph Dewar Baird who was also born in Kirkcaldy on 5th March 1934.By reading this forum it could be possible that Joseph Baird who died in December 1940 could be their father. All my mum told me as I was growing up was that he died whilst on a minesweeper during war. Any further info would be brilliant.

Thank you very much for info Brian. I have never tried any sort of research into my Mum’s family(Baird). It was lovely to come across this forum last night. Many thanks for your reply,I am very grateful to you.I can also remember relations coming to our house who lived in Dunfermline. From what my Mum told me she & her brother were put in an orphanage at a young age. I hope this is of help to you or anybody interested.

Thanks for the info Sid.I would love to find out whether Joseph Baird would have been my Grandfather. I think I will try & find out as much as I can. From what I can remember. I think Mums cousins/aunt came to visit us when I was quite young. I think there was a Christine & also a Jane,am pretty sure Dunfermline is where they lived. But i’m probably talking about the seventies!
