Post by: tricky tree on Thursday 16 April 09 12:43 BST (UK)
Looking for information on the families of John Rugg and Betsy Crossman, who wed at Cossington on 17 Oct.1805.They had daughters Jane,Mary and Elizabeth at Cossington, then moved to Chilton Poulden where they had five other children, including my 3 x great grand mother Sarah Lowe Rugg, also looking for a connection to a Lowe family,as well as Sarahs middle name, when she wed at Newington London in 1844,the witnesses were John Robert Lowe and Maria Ann Lowe

Hi, I have only just picked up your message 11 years after it was posted ! Sarah Lowe Rugg was my gr,gr grandmother. Her daughter Alice Maud Lottie White born 1860 married Frederick Carter in 1884 and they had 5 children in England (all born before their marriage in Sep 1884) before emigrating to New Zealand in December 1884 where they had 5 more children. Alice died in 1908 and Frederick in 1918.
I have been doing the Carter family history for about 25 years and have a lot of information on the White family as well. Like you I could never find anything about the Rugg and Crossman families in Somerset or when/if they might have moved to London, or if Sarah moved there on her own before meeting James Chandos White. The Lowes who were witnesses at their marriage are also a mystery but could have been cousins of Sarah.
Would be interested to learn if you managed to find out any more in the intervening years since 2009.
Best regards, Dennis Carter

There were definitely Ruggs in Cossington who married around the same time as your John.

Jane RUGG to John STOCK    10 Apr 1795
Joan RUGG to William RUGG 21 Jul 1803

As John/Betty bapt a Daughter Jane 15 Apr 1808, Jane may have been his Sister.

Burials;
St Edward, Chilton Polden
MARY Rugg 10 Nov 1821 age 15 (this would be their 1st Daug named Mary) born c 1806
JOHN Rugg 23 Apr 1831 age 65, born c 1766
BETSY Rugg 22 Apr 1869 age 84, born c 1785

So it appears John was a lot older than Betsy.

1861 she is Elizabeth REGG born c 1786 Cossington

Back soon,
Trish :)

I have a theory that WILLIAM Rugg who married Joan Rugg was the Son of JOHN/BETTY Rugg and Bapt St Augustine, West Monkton 06 Jan 1768

They also Bapt a Son bapt there 25 Dec 1765 named JOHN***

Now if I have this right William was buried 1818 Cossington age 51 (1767)

There is also a JOHN Rugg buried 01 Oct 1825 Cossington who is old enough to be their Father.
Age 95, birth c 1730

+ a BETTY Rugge buried 20 Jul 1793 Cossington, no age given

All Parish Record info I have posted is on FreeREG

Going by the signatures of the witnesses of the marriage of Sarah Lowe Rugg

John Robert Lowe is probably the J R Lowe that married Elizabeth Kemble in 1845 Newington - His father is listed as John Lowe occ Hatter - JRL is also a Hatter.  Census has JRL born c1824 Southwark.

Maria Ann Lowe married Frederick Henry Culver June 1845 - father also John Lowe occ Hatter, he was possibly a witness.  Census for Maria gives her place of birth as Bridgewater, Somerset c1821
