Hey, does anybody know if there are records of the 10th Manchester regiments troops anywhere? Does the regiment have its own records somewhere? Im looking to find details about my great great grandad James William Kelly who i know was in the regiment in 1915. Anybody any ideas?
Thanks, Luke

Hi Luke
Have you seen this site - http://www../indexold.html? This site will also tell you something about what the battalion did in WW1 - http://www.1914-1918.net/mancs.htm. You need to look at both the 1/10th and 2/10th Battalions.
Ancestry have published all surviving pension and service records for the Ks, apart from a few miss-files which will be found once they complete the rest of the records.
If you haven't got his record, have you got his medal index card? If not, how do you know that he was in the 10th Bn?
You can also look for him on the 1918 electoral roll. Some councils had an Absent Voters List, which records regiment and number. Even a normal roll might have some information.

Thanks Ken i'll have a root and see what i can find, thanks for the tips!
I dont as yet have any info on his time in the military except for his sons birth certificate of 1915 which lists his profession as:
Private 10th Manchester Territorial Regiment
I know he didnt die in the war so thats a start. Thanks for the help

Do you have an address when his son was born? If it was in Ardwick/Blackley/Gorton/Humle or Salford let me know as i have access to the 1918 Absent voters list which could ( if he is on it) give his regiment number which might get you started.

Hello,
If James Cook was born 1901/2 and enlisted 1915 he would be 14 yrs old or younger. :-\
Is your source information definitely your man?
Where did James live?
Regards
Heywood
-
Hi
Good point on age but his death certificate in 1935 says discharged soldier so I assumed it was end of WW1
-
Where was James living in 1911?
-
There is a James Cook, 1 yr of 25 Robinson Street, Chadderton and also a brief Record for the same person.
-
Hi
The only info I have of James cook is
Born 1901/1902 Manchester
Father Robert
Believed to be living in Wright St Manchester in 1911 census
Married 1931 to Mary Ellen was described as a brick layer
Lived in Miles Platting
Died in 1935 widow described him as discharged soldier
hope that helps
-
Hi,
I posted that one because you mentioned Oldham - not that one then!
Heywood

Sorry Heywood
I tagged on the end of a topic that was about the 10th Manchester Regiment in Oldham - I wasn't sure where they were based and now I believe it is Ashton-Under-Lyne ??
-
That's where the museum is but I don't think it has service records. He could have been in other regiments.
-
If he served after 1920 his records would be held by the Ministry of Defense and details of how to obtain them are under the heading "Request for service records of deceased service personnel" at this web address

This is my transcription of 17 Wright Street, Manchester in the 1901 Census, showing his Grandmother as head of the household. As he is not on the Census it is reasonable to assume that he was not born until after 31st March 1901.

Perhaps he joined up after marriage and the discharge was health related.
Were there any children born to the couple? If so, what was his occupation?
-
Not to muddy the waters too much! but as I can't find James' father on the 1901 census there is a Robert Cook who joined the 3rd Battalion of The Manchester Regiment in 1885 at the age of 17 years 7 months. He may have been in South Africa on the Census date. http://www.tameside.gov.uk/museumsgalleries/mom/history/3rd
Oh and Mary Ellen's maiden name was Hindley.

Hi Guys
The 1901 census is correct I originally searched for the Father Robert-wife Catherine but couldnot find him then a few months later found his enlistment form and realised that's why he was not on the census.
I have not fully determined the Priestleys as yet but I know they were related
Yes John Cooks wife was Mary Ellen Hindley she and John had 5 kids the last one was about 2 months prior to his death in 1935
No John joined up before his marriage
The fee for getting his records from MOD is too high at this stage for me - I suppose I will have to wait til they become available online - I do believe he had major health issues possibly due to army life because at age 35 he committed suicide on the marriage certificate to Mary John is a bricklayer but his death cert says discharged soldier
-
Sorry
My last post should say James Cook not John (silly Typo)
