Is anybody else having problems accessing the IGI site at www.familysearch.org or is it just me?
For the last few days all I get is a 'Cannot find server' message.
Cheers,
Adam
-
I can get it now
Sylviaann
-
working OK for me
myfi
-
It must be just me then. I wonder what the problem is...
Cheers,
Adam
-
still ok for me
are you using a link?
-
Can anyone tell me why I cannot access the above site this week? Is the site being updated or closed for maintenance?
poirot >:(
-
I have used it yesterday with no problem :)
-
It seems fine to me
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
Regards
Valda
-
Yes, and I have just done a search on it now ;D
Jan
-
i have just tried it out this minute, nothing wrong with it, someone said awhile ago that you had to register to access it, you dont, just click on search at the top and you bring the page up straight away.
moira
-
Thank you for all your replies but unfortunately, I still cannot connect to the site.
Each time I click on www.familysearch.org/ the "page cannot be displayed" message pops up.
I have tried different routes but the hyperlink to the site does nothing.
Last week I had no problem at all so do not understand what has changed.
poirot
-
The site is working fine.
May I suggest that you clear your cache? That might help. I often find that if I cant access some common sites, it's because my cache is too full. I never have a problems after clearing it. :)
BD
-
Poirot
Try using this link instead http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
That should be OK for you.
Jan
-
Thanks for your replies BD & Jan.
I have emptied the cache and still cannot see the site and have tried the suggested hyperlink and still get"page cannot be displayed".
Something is blocking my access to this site which is strange as I can access all the other genealogy programmes stored in my favorites.
I have even done a system restore back to the 1st Jan to the time before I had this problem.
It is driving me potty!!!
:'( :'( :'( :'(
-
i have been on a few sites tonight & this has happened to me, i just click on the refresh tab & they come on, so try that.
moira
-
Do you have a firewall?
Maybe your firewall is set too high??
Our firewall is set to standard, but when it gets reset to high, then we have trouble unless we have typed in the sites to which we allow access.
Otherwise I dont have any other suggestions, except to ask your ISP. It is possible that your ISP has blocked them for some odd reason.
BD
-
http://www.familysearch.org/
In the past few days, each time i try to connect to the above site, i get the 'page cannot be displayed' message.
I have tried this at work today, and no problem, thus showing there is no problem with the site.
I havn't knowingly made any changes to my browser settings, and desperatelty need to get back to the site.
CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE
-
You could try Ctl+F5 to force a reload of the page. But I always use this link...
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
Regards,
John
-
...or just google IGI
one of the first hits should be the family search site
another good site is
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm
-
THANKS ALL FOR THE REPLIES,
JOHN....TRIED THE LINK, BUT THAT TOO SAYS PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED ! ONLY HAPPENS ON THIS SITE!
-
Did you resolve your problem as I too cannot get onto that site?
All my other genealogy favorites have no problems but familysearch.org will not download.
poirot
???
-
no still no joy i'm afraid, been trying all night, repaired internet explorer, switched off antivirus software, tried to load from firefox, and get same 'page cannot be displayed from them all.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW if you come up with anything.
When did you first have a problem?...mine was late last week
-
Tuesday 10th was the first time I was aware of a problem and like you I got onto the site via another computer the next day.
I have tried going in different ways but the hyperlinks do nothing when clicked.
I either get the message "page cannot be displayed" or cannot connect to server.
We have two computers and a laptop all accessing the Internet by a wireless router and familysearch is not available on any of them.
I have a friend, who is a networking expert, coming round tomorrow so I will let you know it he can fix the problem although I feel the fault is not at our end.
poirot
:'(
-
Will wait with baited breath!
Reckon that it would be about the same time that I lost the ability to view the site.
No problem with any other site at all. I agree that it looks like the problem is not at our end so to speak, and I wonder just how we can get it corrected if thats the case.
Like to know the outcome of your friends visit, and hopefully the solution...........honestly i will say a prayer tonight!
Cheers,
Derek
-
Poirot and Boco,
You both use the same Internet Service Provider. I suggest you contact them and give them a link to this topic to help them in their diagnosis.
Also, likewise, it may be worth emailing familysearch.org too. (You may need ot be on a different PC to do that!)
Trystan
-
Not good news I'm afraid. My friend couldn't find the problem. All my settings are fine.
I have emailed the LDS for their comments and also looked at my Internet provider's technical site which did not help.
Can't understand my it is only www.familysearch.org which is a problem.
Will let you know if I find a solution,
Regards,
poirot

I mailed tiscali last night, with the details, and a link to this thread.
Mail back telling me that it was received, and their reply will follow.
Expecting them to tell me nothing to do with tiscali, been reading a lot of posts on help sites regarding tiscali and pages that will not load, and 'not our problem, seems the common reply.
Would like to hear from other tiscali users to know if they can connect
-
Hi Poirot,
the same thing is happening to me,the page is being hijacked
and landed on ancestry. I am being hijacked by this link
Link : removed as we do not think this may be safe
jan117
-
Hi bobo66
having the same prob and yes im on tiscali
jan117
-
Hello every one,
cantacted tiscali, and their reply is.....its not their problem.
Taking it further with them, as I now know of 8 people who cannot acces thie site, and they are all on tiscali!
Maybe we should all contact them individually and put pressure on them.
Can everyone contact friends and family who might be on tiscali to see if they can access this site?
Shold a new topic be posted just aimed at tiscali useres, or is this just duplicating this topic?
-
Ye, as bobo suggests, it may well be worth contacting your ISP to help resolve this issue, however, family search may be blocking connections from this particular ISP because of problems received from that network.
Trystan
Legal Note: (it may be just an individual or group of customers from this ISP that may be being malicious, or persons using this ISP because of a discovered security exploit, Note: however I cannot say that there is anything wrong with this particular ISP, this is purely speculation, and no basis should be placed upon my remakes here - they are just given to perhaps help people who are having difficulty accessing a particular website)
-
Hi Derek,
I requested a moderator to merge our queries as they are about the same subject and we were getting two lots of replies.
Asked a friend to try Tiscali today and he had no problem but then he is not on Broadband. So are all the people having trouble with this site Broadband customers?
I too have emailed Tiscali and also the LDS and am still waiting for their replies.
It is reassuring to know that I am not the only one with this problem.
poirot
-
Evening Poiroit,
Grtting interesting to see another posting from a tiscali user who cannot connect
-
It won't help your access problems but could I ask all those who access via framset links to avoid doing so.
When you force access like that you override the load share filters and could cause problems for others.
Cheers
Guy
-
Hi Adam,
Please look under www.familysearch.org posted by poirot & bobo and you will see that you are not alone with this problem.
Are you a Tiscali Broadband subscriber? If so please complain to them about this problem then maybe we will get some action from them.
poirot
-
I can confirm that the users who have experienced problems with the website you mention are of the same IP range.
-
Could all the people who have replied to this query please advise if they are subscribers to Tiscali Broadband.
It is beginning to look like only the people who can access familysearch.org have other ISP's.
poirot
-
Sorry, but I didn't get a chance to read all the replies to your thread so if the following has been suggested already, my apologies.....
Fixing “Website Can’t Be Found” and other Site Error Messages
More than likely you have trouble with accessing quite a few sites.....particularly getting the message "website can't be found" among a few other error messages. Try the following and it should solve your problem.
1. Go to START.
2. Click on CONTROL PANEL.
3. Click on INTERNET OPTIONS.
4. Change NUMBER OF DAYS TO KEEP IN HISTORY to “0” and click APPLY
5. A box appears with tabs labeled across the top. Click on ADVANCED.
6. Scroll down to the sub-heading SECURITY.
7. Make sure the following has check marks next to it:
Use USE SSL 2.0, USE SSL 3.0 and USE TLS 1.0.
8. Also make sure you check off EMPTY TEMPORARY INTERNET FILE WHEN BROWSER IS CLOSED.
More than likely USE TLS 1.0 is not checked of and it should be. This will give you the error messages, as well as a few others, that will prevent you from viewing web sites and the error you are getting. Make sure you empty your cookies cache as well as temporary internet files once in a while, too, as this slows down your computer and these folders tend to "remember" the errors and may continue to bring them up until the folders are emptied.
Judy

Hi,
Yes, Poirot, I am a Tiscali Broadband subscriber. I'll e-mail them today and we'll see what happens.
Cheers,
Adam
-
Hi
Just thought I would let you know that I am a Tiscali Broadband Subscriber and have had no problem accessing Family Search this week...straight in each time
Myfi
-
I'm not with Tiscali, and I've had problems for last fortnight getting access to it :(
Debbie
-
Thank you Judy for your suggestions on how to fix our problem.
USE TLS 1.0 was not checked but the other two were.
Sorry to say that it has not made any difference at all as I still get "Page cannot be displayed".
Neither Tiscali or the LDS have responded to my mail as yet.
This has become quite a hot topic.
:'(
poirot
-
Hello to all you interested people.
I have made some progress today by talking on the phone to a very helpful young lady at Tiscali.
We have established that the fault does not lie with Tiscali as she was able to enter the site straightaway.
I can now access the site through the IP address as for some reason the URL is not recognized. She suggested that I contact Microsoft as some adjustment should be made to the DNS server.
In the meantime if you enter http://204.9.225.200/ you will be back in business.
Not an ideal situation I know but better than nothing for the time being.
poirot
;D
-
Well Done Poiroit,
Tried the link as you suggested, and hey presto.....back in business.
To make life easier for the time being. once I had accessed the site I just copied the link into my favourites, and let it overwrite the original.
How about contacting Microsoft, in case we have the same problem with another site in the future?
Cheers,
Derek
-
Poirot, you are a star!
Not ideal, as you say, but at least we can access it now.
Cheers,
Adam
-
I don't believe it's a microsoft issue. ;)
-
Short BUT SWEET
. NETHER DO I,
Im sure its Not.....
-
Hallelujah!! I'm in ;D ;D
Thank you so much Poirot, I'm very grateful :)
Debbie
-
I am pleased that everyone is happy with this makeshift situation
I don't know how we are going to find the cause of this problem.
Just like to thank everyone involved with running RootsChat for a brilliant site. I think it is great that so many people are willing to help fellow researchers solve their problems.
poirot
;)
-
Hi Everyone,
Having only recently joined Rootschat, I have just searched the site looking to see if anyone had posted on this topic. I have done nothing for around a year on my tree, and on returning I get the same as others 'Server cannot be found'.
I have to say that I am a Tiscali broadband user and when ever I have had trouble (which is not often) the customer service from them as been diabolical. At one point I could not get access to the internet and therefore could not pick up any emails. I got in touch with them.
"Oh no, that is nothing to do with us." they said.
"In that case cancel my subscription will you please, I will go to another ISP."
As if by magic everything started working again almost instantly.
Anyway the link that Poirot posted is working so not all bad. I even got onto the Latter-day saints web site and tried the family history link there http://www.lds.org and got the same answer. Nothing.
Gregg :)
-
I have been trying for last hour to get on familytree.org but cannot access it no matter what i try,I have gone through different links and history but still no joy.
anyone know why?
Tracey
-
Hello everyone,
Seems like the same problem could be back again.
I too am unable to access LDS even through the link provided by Poiroit on 19th Jan........
Anyone else?
-
Hi.
I too haven't been able to access it tonight
Myfi
-
I just Goggled IGI and got in that way - but it was a little slow - but got there in the end!!
Annie :) :)

Havnt been able to access it of the last 12 hours.

Trying to access IGI on LDS family site since yesterday, appears to be down ? ???
Are we all having this problem?
(Sorry, if someone has already posted a message re this, could not see one)

Working fine for me.. Just had a go on there.
Tricia
-
I have not been able to access at all for 2 days. What has changed? Can access any other websites.
Any advice appreciated before I throw my useless lump of a pc out the window! :D
-
I couldn't access it either :-[
Sharon
-
me neither.............arrrrrgh
myfi
-
Very strange - can't help.
Still working ok for me
Tricia ??? ??? ???
-
Not any consolation, but I am so glad its not just me! Tricia, you must have the magic touch! ::) ::)
-
Yes Tricia, are you sweet talking the computer ;D is there a special password we should know about. ;D
Sharon
-
I've not been able to access the site since yesterday evening.
Dimps
-
No joy here either - Tricia what browser do you use?
Trish
-
This is the link on my favourites
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
I use AOL browser
Tricia
-
Thanks Tricia. When I click on your link it cannot find server. Cannot access any pages on this site.
-
Hi
I'm having the same trouble since yesterday evening. Also tried Tricia's link & got the message cannot find server.
I am using Firefox.
Maddie
-
I've just used Firefox and can access the site ok.
Tricia
-
Can also access this site on Internet Explorer.
Maybe it has something to do with your Internet Provider. If you all use the same one maybe the answer lies there
Tricia
-
I use Demon.
Dimps
-
Still nothing doing on IE either.
I use plusnet.
Maddie
-
I'm in Australia - I was wondering if location has anything to do with the problem. There have been times when I can't access particular areas?? but this doesn't seem to be - I can access other US sites.
Obviously it's not the browser - thought it might be IE being its usual horrible self.
Trish
-
Have you been on all day/evening Tricia - Could it be if you exit you can't get back in? (If you are using the site - don't try this ;D )
Trish
-
Exited site - exited everything, switched off computer - returned and it's still ok.
Getting embarrassed now ;D
tricia
-
Hello Tricia
It is just you!! ;D
I confidently expected to be able to access the site - it was fine yesterday - but nothing doing now!
Using IE / Pipex
Arranroots ;)
-
This is probably a very stupid question but could it be anything to do with broadband. ???
Maddie
-
Getting embarrassed now ;D
You should be on the BBC News shortly - the only user of the family search website ;D ;D
Expect alot of lookup requests
Trish
-
Aaah, might have to start charging , in that case ;) ;) ;)
-
Aaah, might have to start charging , in that case ;) ;) ;)
8) 8) Is nothing sacred - RootsChat will never charge 8) 8)
-
Just might be forced to go private ;D
-
LDS is working all right for me too - just tried it out.
Mozilla/Macintosh/from Cyprus
:)
K.
-
I've just been on the LDS home site, and can access everywhere apart from the family history pages, so I think it must be something to do with them (and Tricia ;D). Perhaps there's some major maintenance going on.
Dimps
-
Just might be forced to go private ;D
She always did think she was speshul :P
-
Nope I'm in Ireland and using Mozilla, with Broadband, still ain't working,
Tell me the magic word Tricia, and I swear I wont tell the rest of them :-X ;)

Temporarily try:
http://204.9.225.200
Sorry Trystan, that doesn't get through either. I can get through via AOL but not Yahoo/IE.
Merched
-
That one is timing out for me Trystan.
Sharon
-
I've not been able to access it for a few days. Some real problems there, then!
meles
-
Pathetic little BT dial up in Lancashire isn't working either, strangely Trystan's link gets as far as the navy line near the top of the page and then a while page beneath.
Mary
-
Well, that's one arguement for AOL :P :P ::)
Merched
-
I am glad to see it is not just me who can't get to that site - I have been trying on and off all day. Tricia must be a special person if it consistently lets her in and no-one else :P
Does anyone know what is going on ? Is it routine upgrading or just overloaded with all the new enthusiastic beginners ?
Julie
-
I can get in via trystans link but not through any other link
-
Seems to work perfectly for me - IE - broadband from France.
Anybody wanting something looked up? ;D
Tanja :)
-
nope - that link just times out when I try it
-
Im in Northern Ireland using NTL broadband and IE and couldnt get into IGI since this morning was getting the same not found message as the rest of you i tried the link Trystan posted and it worked. Wonder whats wrong :-\
Colette
-
I'm in Canada, using IE and on a cable connection.
I also am unable to access familysearch using both the main page and Trystans link.
BD
-
Just a thought ??? but does anyone have an e-mail address for them and could ask them what's going on :-\
Merched
-
Hi everyone
i have just logged on to ask the same question. Like Julie i have been trying on and off all morning now afternoon. I was going to have another go at trying to find a marriage i have been looking for, for 18 months. We will just have to wait till it comes back i suppose :-\
Celia
-
I'm still getting the same message using Trystan's link :(
I can only find a "feedback" page for LDS.
Dimps
-
How are you going to do that Merched if the site is down :-\
Celia
-
I've just been in via AOL. There's no problem there. However, when I press on 'contact us', it times out ??? So most of the site is up for a select few ;D
I'll just have to get used to using AOL again I suppose ::)
If there's anyone that's really desperate to find things, I won't promise but.....
I'm not having any luck with my searches anyway. Think I'll have to do some cleaning :'(
Merched
-
I think you have to be registered on the site to be able to contact them. I've never done this because I don't want them knowing my Email address.
When you click on 'contact us' thay ask you to sign in.
Also they won't take personal technical problem requests - just refer you to frequently asked questions which is usless.
I can't access the site on Trystan's link.
Tricia
-
How are you going to do that Merched if the site is down :-\
Celia
Ceila,
There is a good chance that emails will indeed get through, because emails are more persistant, and more 'patient' than our web browsers. They may well handle emails on a totally different machine too.
A good guess is to put "webmaster@" in front of the name of the site (but leave out the www. bit).
You could also go the the http://www.lds.org/ who are the people behind the site. (Having said that I can go the main page there, but get another error whenever I try any pages on there).
I suppose the best thing is if everybody doesn't try and go to familysearch, but leave it a day or so for their traffic to die down a little.
-
I can't get onto LDS.org now, which I could do this morning - it was only the family history pages that I couldn't get to work then and last night. I can get onto the British site (LDS.org.uk), but any links that originate from the US/main site don't work. I can't find anyway of contacting them.
Dimps
-
Sorry, Trystran, our messages have leapfrogged.
Good idea. I'll stop trying for a while.
Dimps
-
Did it snow in Utah too??
;D
Ooh! Yes it did!!
http://www.wunderground.com/US/UT/Salt_Lake_City.html
-
Just on the phone to Salt Lake city... it's promised a snow storm there tonight...
Very "choral" on hold music....
-
I'm with the incrowd now - just received this
Technical Information (for support personnel)
Background:
The request cannot be processed at this time. The amount of traffic exceeds the Web site's configured capacity.
Tricia - typical - shortlived fame for me :'(
-
Ok,
The news is that some of their servers "are not functioning correctly right now".
They are working on them, and they are likely to be back on in a around three hours or so.
That's around 7pm this evening (in the UK).
Please do not try to access their site until then.
I was also given a freephone UK number to try of 0800 1830 1830 but having not tried it, it doesn't work.
Trystan
-
Thanks, Trystan :)
Tricia
-
Do I take a guess that all our homes will be spotless by then? and we will all have clean clothes to wear after doing the washing for the first time in a while?
Mary
-
Well, thats me off to do the ironing. Thanks for the info. Trystan.
-
Oh, for goodness sake - stop being so ridiculous you two
Tricia ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
You don't really think I was serious do you?
There's a Family History Society Meeting which would have taken precedence anyway. ;D ;D ;D
-
Sorry Tricia, only joking.
-
Order is restored :) :)
-
The news is that some of their servers "are not functioning correctly right now".
Could this have been the problem from the very beginning when only causing problems for a select few, mainly Tiscali users?
I have not been able to access the site using the normal address with either IE or Firefox, but the link posted by Poirot and Trystan as been fine up until today. I was on and off all last evening with no probs.
Gregg :)
-
Gregg,
No, the Tiscali thing was a different problem to this one. Not long to wait now - around 7 o'clock it should be working.
Trystan
-
but having not tried it, it doesn't work.
:P Ok which one is it ...... you didn't try it or it didn't work ;D
-
YAYYYYYYYYYY its working again ;D
Hell ive forgot who i was gonna look for now ???
Colette
-
The site now works for me, and there are some changes, so I assume it was being updated. Can we all access the site now, and is this thread closed?
meles
-
I can access it now too, but wheres the changes??
Colette
-
funny because I was able to search a few times on it but for about 2 weeks now I've been unable to access, I am getting exactly the same as the original poster, cannot find server, just clicked the link above and got the same!
-
Just come off the site to view this message, but got back on no prob!
-
Any time the LDS site is unobtainable, e.g. for maintenance, this site will let you view the 1881 census free.

Given that it's the middle of the night for them, they probably do their routine maintenance then.

Hi Colette.
I'm having the same probs. I've contacted them about the problem. Go to the hoepage, and down the bottom, click on the ' contact us " link. I copied and pasted the error message. :-X Lyn

Oh well bang goes my morning of searching then!

No and I had planned a whole morning, the house is empty!
Newbie

Oh NO!!
I am convinced they do their updates/ repairs when the USA is sleeping!
I was going to chase my NZ lot around this morning - have to do the laundry instead now!
Maybe they could think about a polite little "Sorry we are Out of Order - back in an hour" type notification? I would feel a whole lot better if I was kept informed!
One for the staff suggestion box, bbaumannCHQ?

Ironing ??? whats that then.
No lets have a coffee morning instead ;D
Newbie

Oooh, yes please, but I really want to do some research while the house is quiet ::)
think I'll have one of AngelaR's Bellinis....
I agree it would be helpful if the familysearch did put something to say why it's down and when they expect it to be back.....

They appear to have been 'working' on the site for some time now, according to the length of this thread! so yes it would be nice if we could have a bit more information.

This thread is not just for today. ;D It covers the last few months everytime the site is offline.

The front page and the search page comes up, but no luck on the searches yet. :(

Seems to be working fine now - until the next time it goes down!
Kerry :'( :'(

As has already been stated, it would be nice if they could post a message on their home page as to why it is so unstable!
