Title: 1851 Census - help with place of birth
Post by: HensonYoung on Friday 24 April 09 13:55 BST (UK)
Hi all, I'm searching for my g.g.grandmothers place of birth.  On the 1851 Census ANN JONES (I haven't found her maiden name yet) is recorded as a widow, head of household, 70 years old and born ??????? where.  The transcription reads Mark Green, Shropshire but I cannot find this place on any map, I've goggled it ...... no joy.

On the census Ann b.about 1781 .... is living with her son John Jones b.about 1821 Bilston, Staffs his spouse Ann and their children Jane (my g.grandmother) Emma, John Thomas and Mary.  Yes, it's like searching for the needle in the haystack so if anyone has any suggestions/knowledge of where Ann's place of birth was I'll be truly grateful.  :-*  :-*

1851 Census ref : Staffs, Bilston District 4 page 27 H.O.107/2021

Ever hopeful
Polly

Hi Hepburn  -  I've just got there too   :)

I couldn't see anything on Google, but there is another person on the 1851 whose place of birth is transcribed as Mark Green - and the image for that is clearly Marsh Green   :D

There just doesn't seem to have been a Mark Green - it isn't in Phillimore's Atlas - although it could perhaps have been a hamlet  :-\

But - I can't see anyone else either living in or saying born in Mark Green on any other census  :-\

Hello again and thanks Mum44  and Hepburn  for your help ...... had to walk the dogs and then straighten a few things in my head.......so forgive delay in responding ..... bless you both for suggesting Marsh Green ... I checked that out on my 'memory map' ordanance survey maps and now I can see that it's between Telford and Shrewsbury.  I'm not certain that Ann was still alive in 1861 ....... I found an Ann that could be her although age recorded as 75 and place of birth Wellington (that looks like Mellington!).  So onward and upward .... many thanks to both for your invaluable help.   The picture is a liitle clearer now and will help me to find her birth record ...... perhaps! ::)

Regards
Polly

Oh ..... think I'm a bit past pilates now  ;D don't know about you!!!

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl     Have you tried this? There are a couple of John Jones baptized around 1820 with his mother's name Ann.

Hi,

In 1841 Marsh Green was in the township of Isombridge in the parish of Ercall Magna  eg; HO107/905/7  f.104  p.9. (Ercall Magana also seems to be known as High Ercall.)

This website has lots of info :)

Well now Daisy, like Mum44 and Hepburn you are a gem, absolute treasurers one and all.  I am so impressed with the help and direction you all have given me.  I am still no further forward with tracing John Johns and his mother Ann but I'm anticipating cracking this one armed with the most appreciated info you have all passed on.  Thank you.

Very best regards
