hi there, x
i was just wondering if anyone on RC is researching the plant family,
and if there are any plants out there that can claim this family?
my grt granny was Annie Plant 1903-1984 she married Charles Bruce Aitken in 1923, i have their marriage cert which shows Arthur G Plant (platelayer) as her father, my mum has wonderful childhood memory's of visiting Yorkshire in 1960's, ill have to find the photo's,
i will be going back as far as i can with the Plant family, so if theres anyone
out there with Plant connections, come and join me,
1901 England Census
Arthur G Plant b 1870 31yrs, Charndon, Buckinghamshire,(head)
his wife Elizabeth b 1873 28yrs, Bedale, Yorkshire,
they lived in Darlington, St John, Durham
Arthur was a platelayer N.E.R ? (would this be railway?)
Williamth Plant 4yrs son (says William on original page)
Lilian Plant 3yrs daughter
John T Lamb 19yrs Boarder, platelayer
......................................
then in 1911 census they were living in
East Cowton, North allerton, County Yorkshire, North Riding
Lillian Plant 12yrs daughter
Annie Plant 7yrs daughter (my grt granny)
Arthur Plant 5yrs son
William is missing in 1911, he would have been 14yrs, would he have been
to young to leave behind? or maybe he died.
ok, hope to hear from someone, thanks for reading,
kaz, x

i think this could be my Arthur...
in the 1871 England Census
Arthur George Plant 1yrs b 1870/Son born Charndon, Buckinghamshire,
dad, Joseph 30yrs b 1841 head born Charndon, Buckinghamshire
Mum, Sarah 27yrs b 1844 wife, born Twyford, Buckinghamshire
living in Twyford, Charndon, Buckinghamshire
Joseph Plant agricultural labourerer
Sarah Plant
William James Plant 7yrs/son
Mary Anne Plant 5yrs/daughter
Thomas Jesse Plant 4yrs/son
Frederic Alfred Plant 2yrs/son
Arthur George Plant 1yrs/son
also i noticed on the census in the same street is...
Isaac plant 37yrs agricultural labour
Martha/wife 33yrs
Miriam?/daughter 13yrs
Diana/daughter 11yrs
John/son 9yrs agricultural labourer (at 9 yrs old?)
Samual/son 7yrs
Betsy/daughter 4yrs
Thomas/son 2yrs
Anne/daughter 2months
could be a brother of Joseph?

NER is the North Eastern Railway
Plate layers were trackmen. The term dates back to the earliest days of the railways when they were known as plateways and were built using short sections of iron bar or angle sections, rather than the rails we know today. as the photo's show, a plate layer would be responsible for all aspects of track maintenance such as replacing worn out rails or rotten sleepers, packing to ensure a level track, weeding and clearance of the drains etc.
My GGrandfather was a platelayer too ;D

hi madpants, x

ive found lots today, ill post in here when im finished, just incase there are plants out there, somewhere, HELLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Hi Mamakaz
That's a great answer from Madpants about platelayers...........and the N.E.R. Up here in the Highlands we have the G.N.E.R., which is the Great North Eastern Railway.
Also, one of our family, Frederick William Cook, (late 19C), of Sculcoates, nr Hull, Yorkshire, was a Railway Carm................Madpants, is this Carman? ???
And would you please be kind enough to share what you know a Carm on the railways is? :o
Mamakaz, its Spring, your arboretum needs to expand, please, please, where are these plants??? ???
Cheers

hi dan, x
i wish i could take all the credit for my plants, i managed to get back to martha (kesia's mum), then i found a bucks website, i typed in kesia parker (who married my james), and her whole family were there (so i didnt need to do any work there) same with the other maternal lines,
so i just got lucky ;D
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=hrohrer
i need to find out more about Arthurs wife now, ill have to order their marriage cert if i cant get her maiden name, i was hoping there would be someone researching plants on here, but ive found another website which i will post the family on and see if i get any luck there,
okie's, im gonna spend a few hours searching for your richard today, i must be able to find something on him, hugs kazzie, xxxx
-
:)
Hi Kaz
Again, I'm so happy that this side of your family's research has gone so well for you ;D
Still can't believe that not a single Plant, nor anyone else researching this family has contacted you?? ???
Anyway, I'm longing for news of Richard Aitken, so any news welcome, even if he did die in the 1918 'flu pandemic, as I think he may have done, which would explain his almost non existence after possibly 1891 or so, when we know, he was working as a bank clerk, possibly in Edinburgh? ???
Isn't Kesia a lovely name? :D
Cheers

hi Dan, xx
Kesia is a beautiful name apparently it is of African origin and means favourite.
im gonna take your advice and post in the Bucks forum, like you say, may find some living plants, kaz, xxxx
-
:)
Hi Mamakaz
Hmmmmm........no wonder I like Kesia, African origin! ;D
And, yesssssss, I have a real, live, thriving Plant for you...............not A. Plant, but, 'C.Plant', he/she is to be found in the South African White Pages, and is living in a well to do section of Durban, in KwaZulunatal.
I could phone and ask if they from Yorkshire????? ???
Cheers

Hi, I am looking for Richard Parker born in Piddington in 1777. He was married to Martha Roberts in 1800. Richard had a son called Richard also born in 1801 who married Elizabeth. They came from Marsh Gibbon but are later found in Great Bourton, oxon around 1871 (I think) i have a copy of the census. He is my great great great grandfather.Ive traced Martha Roberts family back to 1680 but cant find Richard Parker as I want to trace his parents. Its strange that you are from middlesex as Richard and Elizabeth were looking after a grandchild called Elizabeth age 8 born in Middlesex!Richard and Elizabeth had a daughter called Sarah who had an illegitimate child called William Shirley Parker born 1863 as was Elizabeth the other grandchild. Sarah was working as a house servant. I understand you are looking for any plants but wondered if you have any information on Richard born 1777 as Im stuck!

Hi again..I now have a 'tree' on Ancestry.co.uk... Plants from Buckinghamshire from late 1500's up to Yorkshire in 1800's and across to Lancashire.....I would like to know how we came to be in Buckinghamshire. ..how and why did we get there...??
Sarah Plant.
-
Hi! I have some ancestors Plant, Middleton, Parker, Lawson, Gliddon/Gledden,... and I believe there's a connection with some mentioned.
Ernest Lawson, married to Jane Plant, b. C. 1881 in Northallerton.
Parents of Jane: John Plant, b. C. 1849 in Chardon, and Mary Hannah Gledden, b. C. 1854 in Great Ouseburn area.
Parents of John Plant: James Plant, b. 1816 in Chardon, and Keziah Parker, b. C. 1816 in Marsh Gibbon.
Parents of Keziah Parker: Richard Parker, b. C. 1786 in Bucks. and Martha Roberts, b. 1778 in Marsh Gibbon.
Parents of Martha Roberts: Richard Roberts, b. C. 1745 in Marsh Gibbon, and Ann Draper, b. C. 1751 in Marsh Gibbon.
Hope it makes sense :) The tree + DNA is on Ancestry, as well as on Gedmatch, if someone wants to compare it with theirs.
